Nehalem will have an integrated memory controller, so it requires a socket with more pins so it can talk directly to the memory. Not to mention the new QuickPath bus.

meh don't even wait or save of up Nehalem it will be insanely expensive including the mobo/ddr3 it will take at least 2 years for prices to settle down

are you kidding me? ddr3 prices are what ddr2 prices were when c2d launched; about 150 bones for 2gig.

The cool chips are going to be lga1366, but the lower end nehalems will be lga1160

Yeah I'm going to do what I always do with CPUs and Vid cards.

I'll wait until the next gen comes out then pickup last gen bargin-binned /used one. Then they start the next gen and its ground breaking, (cept with the 9 series Tee hee hee) so I end up upgrading anyways.

Naw. I gotta skip Nehalem. December 09 upgrade: 4 or even 8 gigs of DDR2, an RV770 based card, and a Q9300 which I'll OC the snot out of. Then for 08 I dont spend a nickel. Its an excercize in self restraint but I will resist!!!

I'm pretty excited to see 3 memory buses for server systems - this will be killer for high density virtualization. I can't really predict where gaming machines will go, as games are generally written for the mainstream, but this stuff will be big $$$

On the bright side, moving the memory controller on-chip makes chipsets simpler and motherboards less expensive, right? [not holding my breath]

Hopefully that means Nvidia will make a decent chipset for Intel finally.

A quickPath to PCIe bridge should be pretty simple, but I'm betting the license fee for QuickPath will cost more than the going rate for an entire PCIe bridge.

Pessimism aside, I'd really love to see a desktop with enough PCIe slots for SLI, 10 gig ethernet, and a big RAID controller. Oh wait, by the time this ships flash disks will have obviated the need for host RAID, and 10GE will work on CAT6e and be integrated in the chipset
