Just an update since I know a lot of people here look at UP platforms for storage servers. Posted the Intel Xeon E3-1230 benchmarks to compare against the Xeon E3-1220 benchmarks.

Super short story: I paid something like $15 more for the Xeon E3-1230 and in most cases it is going to be worthwhile if one can use the extra performance.

IF one can use the extra performance? No such thing as too much performance :) Sounds like the E3-1230 may be my next storage server CPU, now if Supermicro would just hurry up and release the reworked (post Intel flaw) X9SCM motherboards.

Some of the benches were particularly impressive - the 7Zip and the TrueCrypt. Not to mention the addition of HT means VM's would probably benefit - so this is a no brainer for anyone interested in a storage server above or underneath a hypervisor.

The only real question I have is whether I should get one of the models with the HD Graphics 3000 - say the E3-1235, because I use the server console a lot and the peashooter graphics chip that SM puts on their boards is dreadful and has no hardware acceleration (XGI Volari Z9 i think) so everything LAGS..

Wouldn't it be nice if SM would integrate the on-chip graphics with the BMC IP-KVM? Now that would be sweet - all the advantages of IP-KVM, decent graphics performance an even lower power consumption than their Matrox 200 IMPI integration! Heck - it would probably even lower their manufacturing costs by a couple of $.

Q57/ Q67 w/ vPro gets very close to this BTW.

I agree I was really surprised.

The reason you cannot do this currently is the BMC has the Matrox "GPU" integrated. Without vPro-like access, it may be difficult to see BIOS screens and the like.

looks like the E3-1220L would be a good choice for a fileserver, I didn't think file servers needed much CPU power
