Scali said:You don't even know Dixons, yet you think you can draw conclusions about their size?
Besides, what does size have to do with anything anyway? It's a safe assumption that they are big enough for AMD to matter, since AMD names them specifically.
But regardless of size, apparently not every store is willing to back up AMD... far from it.
And just because others have not counter-sued (yet?), that doesn't mean they are willing to back up AMD.
I just don't think that AMD has a very strong case.
Donnie27 said:No, they weren't, Intel went to 90nm first, sorry. First 13nm TBreads ran hot enough to bake bread as well. Oh yes and Intel was first to 130nm as well. THe first Northwoods were cool as the other side of the pillow. Are you preaching revisionist history? Heat mostly scales with MHz and IPC, Integrated Memory Controller and etc.. saves AMD bacon more than Process magic!
GamePC's results
Many other sites show the same power curve.
Again, be clearer, say P4 and not Intel. Intel also makes the cooler running, much less power using Pentium M as well. You say Intel as if the Pentium M isn't made by Intel LOL! Again, the more facts we come to the message board with, the fewer Flame Fests happen.

If AMD should be selling an X2 @ 1.6Ghz for $250, then that justifies the current X2 price scale then, as it would fit right on the sliding curve for their current lineup...but if AMD 'would give its left nut to make 25% of the chips that Intel can', why should they not focus their production on items with higher margin dollars, especially if the demand is there? I guess instead of looking at IPC, we should wait for their quarterly filings to see if that's a bad strategy or not.
|Leviathan| said:ok should have said a64 compared to the respective intel p4 competitors? doh i thought it was quite obvious, and your link actually points out my point becasue you can't consider a pentium M in the same class as the a 64 and the respective p4
so ignoring pentium m , a64 against pr - power consumption? i think that i saw the amd were more efficnet
+ anyway you stated that heat is an issure directly proportion to clock speeds etc, well then ok it is but what is this crave for al these mhz when a far less clocked amd can easily compare to a more clocked p4
so that shows that extra clocking is not a *must* issue and that a differnet strategic procedurre gives out the same results
ok if amd used the same clock speed then they would have the same heat levels than p4 or even more, ok fair enough
but the point is that they don't, becasue they adopted a deiffenrt method and irrelevant of what casues heat
amd's a64 are cooler than the relatve p4
i guess its simple.

BillLeeLee said:Intel is by far a richer company, their market cap is 165 billion, which is over 20x more than AMD's.
And even though AMD is creeping up in market share, Intel still owns around 80% of the consumer processor market.
sakurakana1003 said:Well, I hope AMD does better in the future. Why? To give Intel even more competition, intense competition = awesome products for consumers like we are seeing with the video card market.![]()

That's a whole lot of words.Donnie27 said:Why, because AMD is fighting Intel on a small level or with one hand while sitting down. Intel has already announced Dual Cores for all lines, including Celerons, sheesh!
AMD or no one can simply think; Were great and folks will pay whatever. Dual Cores are new, AMD and Intel must SEED THE MARKET first. Or Create interest. That means put something more affordable than a damned $589 processor right from a start and make something a hell of a lot cheaper than the bottom $389. Only fuggin Fans could like paying prices that high. SO NO, it doesnt take an Intel Fan to understand how Intel, ATI, nVidia and the rest have done things to move the market.
AMD announced that they expect to ship about 100K DC processors this YEAR!
Now only someone on CRACK would think Dell would kill its sweetheart deal with Intel over that? Advertising costs sharing lose would cause the to loose money as well. Why, so some Fan can be happy Dell is selling AMD? Lets see, competition is a two way street. Let's say Dell did start selling AMD. Dell has to now raise prices to make up for the more expensive Intel processors so guess what, Higher AMD prices as well. Please NO shit about how AMD loves or even fucking cares about consumers. If AMD gets its way, prices will go up, not down as theyre lying about.
So the Industry might think thats too high as well. What if some Companies say: Fuck you AMD, we cant make a profit off these high prices. Right at the time when AMD is saying Intel is stopping them (the OEMs and VARs) what a joke. They might be worth every penny, hell IMHO; a Porsche 911 Turbo is worth every penny, think every car buyer can afford one to buy one?
Then theres whole idea of AMD and Intel thinking enthusiast are rich and actually will buy $800 to $1,200 CPUs, thats insane. So hell yes AMD can be doing more to create interest in Dual Core by helping folks get their hands on them. That 1.6GHz model for $250 would give a lot of folks a shot at Dual Core technology. Thatd turn into more momentum for software folks, non-Geeks trying the tech and so on. They did this with Opteron and even K7 back in the day. Now Greed has taken over. I saw an ad for an $899 Rig with Dual Core 2.8GHz. That company also sells AMD products.

They LOVED dual Opteron rigs, and dual core Athlon 64 X2s were hotly anticipated as well. Matched up with a $1500 graphics card, they don't care about a $400 processor.

No, Kyle snapped me up for Senior Editor here at [H], but I do know that they're selling X2's right now.BillLeeLee said:Hey Morley, you still selling Boxx workstations? Do you know if they're going to be using DC Athlons anytime? I want to get a Boxx for graphics work in the future (wayyy in the future, heh).
Morley said:That's a whole lot of words.
Bottom line: with AMD's 'limited production capacity', focusing their efforts on dual core for the DCC market where they have superior performance may be a better strategy. I don't think mom's email machine needs a dual core processor for a long time to come, and it's a waste of marketing funds to try to attempt it.

possibly, but after reading this thread.. it seems that you're ignoring the demographic hereDonnie27 said:Last but not least, during the Northwood's best days, the folks here still were 70% picked AMD as better. Donnie, you have some good points to make, however, you're alienating people by the condescending way you make them. One should be wary of blind faith in any company.Donnie27 said:After reading you posts I have no doubt about what you're saying. Then soon after you post how sweet that system was, some AMD fan would show up to say you're lying. Or there'll be endless probing for something it doesn't run well. Oh wait, it has to suck at running unoptimized L.A.M.E. and even AMD !!!!!! (Even those who's never booted up the app) will deem it more important than anything, like games now LOL! It's back to that moving standard of measurement.

I just noticed today... and it seems like the AMD forum has about 25-30 viewers, while the Intel forum is more around 0-5![]()
