Intel vs AMD popularity

I posted the link, which includes the actual quote. It's bad enough that you think the US is the world, but please try to at least read the links in posts that contain relevant information.

i read it if thats true then why havent any other stores said any thing about it?
granted Dixons may be a big store in the UK but im sure there nowere near the size of say Bestbuy here in the US yet Bestbuy hasnt counter-sued yet

You don't even know Dixons, yet you think you can draw conclusions about their size?
Besides, what does size have to do with anything anyway? It's a safe assumption that they are big enough for AMD to matter, since AMD names them specifically.
But regardless of size, apparently not every store is willing to back up AMD... far from it.
And just because others have not counter-sued (yet?), that doesn't mean they are willing to back up AMD.
I just don't think that AMD has a very strong case.

i dont know seems pretty good to me thay have a rulling from japan to run with now and then what ever the EU digs up on intel; if even 1/2 the stuff is true thay have a valid case now weather or not any thing realy comes of it is another thing
i think at the very lest intel will have to play fare with marketing ie no more kickbacks and threats to corps for working with AMD

Cool your jets before you bring out the nationalistic crap, Scali, perhaps he didn't realize the world-wide nature of AMD's suit, or their ability to bring a State-side lawsuit across international boarders.

If AMD should be selling an X2 @ 1.6Ghz for $250, then that justifies the current X2 price scale then, as it would fit right on the sliding curve for their current lineup...but if AMD 'would give its left nut to make 25% of the chips that Intel can', why should they not focus their production on items with higher margin dollars, especially if the demand is there? I guess instead of looking at IPC, we should wait for their quarterly filings to see if that's a bad strategy or not.

No, they weren't, Intel went to 90nm first, sorry. First 13nm TBreads ran hot enough to bake bread as well. Oh yes and Intel was first to 130nm as well. THe first Northwoods were cool as the other side of the pillow. Are you preaching revisionist history? Heat mostly scales with MHz and IPC, Integrated Memory Controller and etc.. saves AMD bacon more than Process magic!

GamePC's results

Many other sites show the same power curve.

Again, be clearer, say P4 and not Intel. Intel also makes the cooler running, much less power using Pentium M as well. You say Intel as if the Pentium M isn't made by Intel LOL! Again, the more facts we come to the message board with, the fewer Flame Fests happen.

Donnie27

ok should have said a64 compared to the respective intel p4 competitors? doh i thought it was quite obvious, and your link actually points out my point becasue you can't consider a pentium M in the same class as the a 64 and the respective p4
so ignoring pentium m , a64 against pr - power consumption? i think that i saw the amd were more efficnet

+ anyway you stated that heat is an issure directly proportion to clock speeds etc, well then ok it is but what is this crave for al these mhz when a far less clocked amd can easily compare to a more clocked p4

so that shows that extra clocking is not a *must* issue and that a differnet strategic procedurre gives out the same results
ok if amd used the same clock speed then they would have the same heat levels than p4 or even more, ok fair enough
but the point is that they don't, becasue they adopted a deiffenrt method and irrelevant of what casues heat
amd's a64 are cooler than the relatve p4
i guess its simple.

Why, because AMD is fighting Intel on a small level or with one hand while sitting down. Intel has already announced Dual Cores for all lines, including Celerons, sheesh!
AMD or no one can simply think; “We’re great and folks will pay whatever”. Dual Cores are new, AMD and Intel must SEED THE MARKET first. Or Create interest. That means put something more affordable than a damned $589 processor right from a start and make something a hell of a lot cheaper than the bottom $389. Only fuggin Fans could like paying prices that high. SO NO, it doesn’t take an Intel Fan to understand how Intel, ATI, nVidia and the rest have done things to move the market.

AMD announced that they expect to ship about 100K DC processors this YEAR!
Now only someone on CRACK would think Dell would kill its sweetheart deal with Intel over that? Advertising costs sharing lose would cause the to loose money as well. Why, so some Fan can be happy Dell is selling AMD? Let’s see, competition is a two way street. Let's say Dell did start selling AMD. Dell has to now raise prices to make up for the more expensive Intel processors so guess what, Higher AMD prices as well. Please NO shit about how AMD loves or even fucking cares about consumers. If AMD gets its way, prices will go up, not down as they’re lying about.

So the Industry might think that’s too high as well. What if some Companies say: “Fuck you AMD, we can’t make a profit off these high prices.” Right at the time when AMD is saying Intel is stopping them (the OEMs and VARs) what a joke. They might be worth every penny, hell IMHO; a Porsche 911 Turbo is worth every penny, think every car buyer can afford one to buy one?

Then there’s whole idea of AMD and Intel thinking enthusiast are rich and actually will buy $800 to $1,200 CPUs, that’s insane. So hell yes AMD can be doing more to create interest in Dual Core by helping folks get their hands on them. That 1.6GHz model for $250 would give a lot of folks a shot at Dual Core technology. That’d turn into more momentum for software folks, non-Geeks trying the tech and so on. They did this with Opteron and even K7 back in the day. Now Greed has taken over. I saw an ad for an $899 Rig with Dual Core 2.8GHz. That company also sells AMD products.

Nothing is a "must". Most folks buying computers don't see them as Drag Racing Sports Cars like most Geesk do. I agree, the A64 runs cooler and AMD went about it the right way. With the P4 Prescotts, Intel didn't, with the Pentium M, they did. I disagree with you about the Pentium M. I don't think the P4 is the best option right now, but that doesn't mean it sucks!

I think Intel knows what it has to do, but needs time to do it. THe current stuff is transistional IMHO.

BTW, Intel made 2.4 billion and AMD lost a few million this past quater.

The other bad news for AMD is that the kids are going off to school and this year's "must have" item is a Centrino Notebook.

Donnie27

Ah yes, notebook sales have seen the largest increases, and this is where Intel is increasing its earnings, since their chips power a lot of the notebooks out there. Hell, I love my Centrino notebook. :D

But I'm still waiting on the Pentium M desktop solutions. :D

i think intel is a richer company, you got to know, they have big money from all those years selling cpus for the entire world. amd did a bold thing, creating the amd64 cpu, but intel is richer.

Intel is by far a richer company, their market cap is 165 billion, which is over 20x more than AMD's.

And even though AMD is creeping up in market share, Intel still owns around 80% of the consumer processor market.

Well, I hope AMD does better in the future. Why? To give Intel even more competition, intense competition = awesome products for consumers like we are seeing with the video card market. :D :D :D

Wait, nVidia has a competitor? kidding.

That's a whole lot of words.

Bottom line: with AMD's 'limited production capacity', focusing their efforts on dual core for the DCC market where they have superior performance may be a better strategy. I don't think mom's email machine needs a dual core processor for a long time to come, and it's a waste of marketing funds to try to attempt it.

Furthermore, having sold workstations (BOXX) into studios for nearly two years, I can tell you that they're up on the technology, and they'll come to YOU when you release products like this. They LOVED dual Opteron rigs, and dual core Athlon 64 X2s were hotly anticipated as well. Matched up with a $1500 graphics card, they don't care about a $400 processor.

Hey Morley, you still selling Boxx workstations? Do you know if they're going to be using DC Athlons anytime? I want to get a Boxx for graphics work in the future (wayyy in the future, heh). :D

It's not Truechrome, it's Unichrome!

That's some sweet name branding right there. :p 8 MB or graphics perfection.

No, Kyle snapped me up for Senior Editor here at [H], but I do know that they're selling X2's right now.

http://www.boxxtech.com/products/3200.asp

It's a fantastic company, and they're going through some exciting changes right now, I'll always keep an eye on what they're doing...

I've seen your posts here before over the years. It took me over 6 years to post here. I started reading [H] back in August of 1999.

Lots of words but I do say them with respect to ya' Dewd! There're many more Mom's using Email machines than Geeks here, hehehehe! Even Studios are a small market when they're estimating 200 Million PCs (that includes Laptop BTW) will sells in 2005. Intel has seen 51% increase in APAC. US is flat except notebooks.

As I said, Intel might have not made the right move with the P4 as it relates to heat, they most certianly did in other areas. Trade-offs. Hammers are harder to RAMP, it's more than FAB space. You take an already hard to make Hammer and try Two of them, now you more than doubled the odds something goes wrong. I'm sure there's a processor on Intel's "Cuttingroom" floor that was better than current P4s both couldn't be rampped up so it died on the vine. Just as I'm sure there's Process Engineers at IBM and AMD who wanted to back off the Hammers before RevE but AthlonXP left them no choice. No matter what some here might say, it got pimp slapped.

Last but not least, during the Northwood's best days, the folks here still were 70% picked AMD as better. If next year Intel launched something that crushed AMD/K9, AMD Fans would simply say, wait for K-10 and 75% would still favor AMD.

If Conroe demolishes K8, then I will build a Conroe system.

possibly, but after reading this thread.. it seems that you're ignoring the demographic here ;)

I was just trying to point just that. The folks (70 to 80%) who make up this forum are who they are, not common folks and a lot of time, not using common sense. Many just just Love AMD no matter what IMHO!

After reading your posts I have no doubt about what you're saying. Then soon after you post how sweet that system was, some AMD fan would show up to say you're lying. Or there'll be endless probing for something it doesn't run well. Oh wait, it has to sucks at running unoptimized L.A.M.E. and even AMD !!!!!! (Even those who's never booted up the app) will deem it more important than anything, like games now LOL! It's back to that moving standard of measurement.

Donnie, you have some good points to make, however, you're alienating people by the condescending way you make them. One should be wary of blind faith in any company.

Didn't mean to be condescending or anything. My next build will be AMD and I'm always going back and forth. Blind faith sucks no matter who it's for or against. That's not what message boards use to be about. I always believe in giving At-a-boys when either should get one, or give them a Ding-Bat award when they earn that.
