Intel to Outsource Entry Level Processor and IoT Device Production

According to upstream supply chain sources that have confided with Digitimes, Intel is considering outsourcing the production of entry-level Atom processors, chipset, and IoT devices to foundry houses. The sources speculated that only Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is capable of handling rush orders. TSMC already manufactures the Intel FPGA series products. Intel has been struggling to meet demand for its products as noted in the 3Q 2018 financial results.

Among the available foundry houses, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is the only one capable of handling such rush orders, the sources noted. The sources pointed out that Intel and TSMC have been in talks about outsourcing production for the chip giant's CPU and chipset since mid-2018. However, Intel declined to comment on "market rumors."
