I've acquired a 1U chassis with 2 Intel S3000PT boards + Xeon CPUs, memory, power supply, and disk drives. I love the compactness of the boards but I absolutely cannot stand the jet engine fans that are in the chassis. So, I want to move the boards to another chassis. The problem though is the fan connectors. The board as 3x 8 pin fan headers, each fan in the chassis is actually two fans bolted together and the 8 pin connector splits into two 4 wire runs that are apparently identical the the standard 4 pin CPU fan connectors on newer boards.

I've searched for, but have been unable to find any adapters for this 8 pin header. Has anyone encountered these before, and if so, what are my options?

Worse come to worse, I suppose I could just clip the cables on the chassis fans then wire them up to standard 120mm fans, but I'd much rather find an adapter. Any help on running this down would be great.

I believe you're going to have more difficulty finding a case that fits those boards as twin 1U boards all tend to be proprietary.
 
I figured I'd end up building something. I was thinking along the lines of a shuttle sized wood box for it. I've no use (or place) for a the 1U chassis itself.

From the look of the wiring diagrams it's a straightforward +V GND PWM TACH (x2) header, so worse comes to worse, I can splice stuff. I was just hoping someone had encountered a premade wiring harness for this sort of thing previously. I mean, the board is a standard Intel board that anyone could order directly from them, about 2/3 the size of an mATX. The chassis bears no name, but I suspect it's from Rackable or some subsidiary thereof.
 
Yeah. I just learned to live with my 1U servers' noise, unfortunately.

Luckly, our 2U servers are going to replace our 1U units (over price and cooling).
 
Heh, yeah. The office is at the opposite end of the house from my room, but even at that distance the fans are audible through two closed doors and 40' of hallway.

Maybe I can find some nice white oak to match the desk it's sitting on right now...

That IS noisey. I typically just shut them up in a black server cabinet turn up the cabinet's main exhaust fan (some 12" exhaust fan mounted on top).
 
Yeah. 6 40mm fans per board, so 12 total all cracking something between 5000-7000 RPM (will have to boot it later and check the tach readings from the system). Just starting one of the systems drowns out my Catalyst 5505 quite easily. I think it's mostly apparent noise because of how high frequency the noise is (because the fans are so small).
 
Fan speeds are that low? The 40mm fans in my 1U server are nearly 15000rpm.
 
My are lower, probably due to the PIII Coppermine what sits in it! (still works well for it's job, so we never replaced it).

Oi, I was going by sound, but you're probably right about the RPM they hit during boot since they spool _way_ up, I have no idea how high (about three times as loud as idle though). Definitely need to get an OS installed along with the Intel monitoring tools so I can see what the baseline is.

I haven't really used 'em much because they still have the highly customized Debian install from the previous owner. But I just got my Technet subscription so very shortly they'll have Windows 2008 on them. They'll be replacing a P4 and P-Pro 200 which are currently serving as my AD, PDC, and Exchange servers (all running Server 2003). So, a double first, my first time with W2008 and my first time with EFI boards. Hopefully I'll learn some new and interesting stuff.
 
Yeah, it's quite annoying when the fans go up to 65db. They do move an incredible amount of air though (I have 4 processors in my 1U server, so it needs all the cooling it can get).
