Intel’s Penryn @ 45nm - Intel gives us a quick look into their next-generation processor, codenamed “Penryn,” that is due to be available in late 2007. This is certainly some technology that could give Intel a further leg up on the competition.

What we know for sure at this point is that we should see Penryn processors, with their new 45nm High-k + Metal Gate Transistors, by the second half of 2007.

The big question for me: Does it use Socket 775?

As noted in the article, Intel noted that current motherboards could support Penryn processors, but they did not know which ones. Obviously boards and BIOS have to validated.

Yes hooray for sure. But we will likely see this Penryn core stretch across more than one LGA/socket.
 
Wow, Intel has floored me again. They are really on a roll here: Core 2 Duo, Quadro, and now this. AMD doesn't even have anything to compare to this, let alone compete. A simple substance and die change will give a 20% boost in power. This is unbelievable, this is history in the making, folks. For 47 years now we have used Silicone, and out of the blue Intel goes "OK, enough of that, check out this new technology we have already designed, perfected, and will be sending into production shortly."

Watch out K8L, your thunder is being stolen more every day!
 
that'd be the day. as soon as a new socket comes out from intel, i'm definitely going to upgrade to it as seeing how good intel is with keeping socket compatibility, unlike the s939 i'm current using. of course, assuming that intel is still higher in performance at that time.
 
Intel has really hit a solid run of processor improvements here recently, this is great. Already to 45nm, and seeing 32 and 22nm on the charts is pretty amazing, every 2 years, nice, but it does make you think about when they are going to hit a wall in shrinking transistors further.

AMD does have plans to combat this as you will see shortly, but the fact of the matter is that Intel still have more money than God, Allah, and Buddha combined when it comes to marketing. So AMD is going to have to be on top of its game and strike in a precise and vicious manner, if their Barcelona core is to ever have a chance. Obviously performance will weigh in heavily as well and from what we have heard it will be a screamer.

Hi-K/metal is not an Intel invention, rest assured. The industry has been moving towards this for half a decade, and it's about damned time someone's finally gotten it into production, kudos to Intel for that. And BTW, it's Silicon. Silicone is completely different.

some pretty sweet news to slide in on a Sat. i ilike it even more becuase it was on a Sat, and not a PR event for investors and Wall street, although they should be pretty happy, jus for a different reason that most of us are.
 
I will say that some of this is a bit of a surprise to me. I was under the impression that Penryn was basically just going to be a die shrink. The additions and refinements of the processor itself are not something I expected.

It will be very interesting if Intel does pull this all off and in the timeframe they have given. I'm using a Core2Duo right now and it's the first new Intel CPU I've bought since the Celeron 300.

If Penryn ends up blowing away Conroe, I'll try my damnedest to get a Penryn setup next year if AMD's processors are in the same boat for performance as they are right now against Conroe.

This is the most exciting I've seen the processor market since the PIII vs. T-Bird days.

AMD seems to have woken a sleeping giant with A64 and X, now intels is wide awake and pushing forward!

AMD is going to have to fight it real hard! and not put out things like 4x4, and really innnovate.
 
I cant wait till that new transistor tech makes it to op-amps and other analog design.
 
I gotta say I find it pretty funny that K8L is essentially meant to combat Conroe and yet it's going to run smack into Penryn.

Yup, hopefully K8L does good. I like competition. It means better products for us consumers. !!!!!!s seem to forget this.

On a similar note , here's the validation crew when they received their 1st Penryn samples ( at 1 am and by 3 am they booted Windows , 1st chip from the 1st wafer ran at around 2GHz )

I think AMD must of really pissed intel off with there AMD 64 run cus intel is hitting them hard like Mike Tyson hit his competitors in his prime lol. They are really on the ball now & I'm very impressed. I'm dieing to get my Core 2 build done myself but like many, I'm juggling between a quad or duo extreme. Now with this announcement, my options might of expanded for down the road upgrading.

Seeing as dual cores still perform better in gaming, and I don't do much else than that with my PC, I don't have too much interest in moving to a 4 core processor.

I can't wait until Intel puts the memory controller in the CPU (like AMD) and ditches the FSB. Maybe after Penryn.

It is called Nehalem , has been in development since 2001 ( :p ) and not only has integrated memory controller for dual/quad channel DDR3 but also CSI links ( Intel's aproach to serial links as is AMD's HT )

Barcelona is the server quad-core version that will compete with Clovertown. Agena is the desktop quad version which will compete with Kentsfield and Yorktown, and Kuma (sp?) will compete with Conroe, Allendale, and Wolfsdale.

Ah, I see, thank you... Is there any difference between the server quad-core, and the desktop? They're both native quad-core I'm assuming... And I'd also think that all these are on track for a simultaneous release?

Just one more step to the Quantum level CPU. Things start getting interesting once they go through another couple of shrinks.
 
The desktop version = no Hypertransport Links to make it Dual or Multi-socket compatible. The Desktop versions should also ship with a non-Server compatible socket.
Desktop models will ship later than the Server versions (including FX for $ X $), maybe by Oct. or Nov. AMD did this with Athlon64 and Dual Core so that's nothing new. Ship the money makers first.
 
I'm definitely going intel for my next upgrade. AMD is going to have to pull some nice rabbits out of the hat to convince me otherwise.

doesnt Intel and AMD have some sort of deal over patents? ... so if Intel discover some new metal and patents it AMD can use that patent...

I dont think this new processor will blow away AMD, both AMD and Intel have had alot of develoment time now and all we see now is Intel letting it all go from develoment to productions... soon its time for AMD ...

No. It only covers x86 tech, such as SSE4 and x86-64. Process tech is certainly not covered.

That's like believing the optimistic guidance AMD gave analysts in December and then looking at the real numbers in January.

They still haven't said what magic allows them to accelerate their 45nm transition.
