intel or amd cpu for build

Well I have 2 options right now

Build a rig with either of these cpu's
Amd phenom 2 x4 970be for $264 minus OS or
Intel Pentium g620 for $240 minus OS

If you had to pick what would you take and why? I am going to microcenter today and these are my two options for processors to use. With the pentium I can upgrade to a 2500 if I want to later for a additional $179 at MC. Just wondering how well the x4 970 will hold up gaming over the course of a few years.

I am not doing any overclocking with this rig at all. I am not into tinkering like i use to be and prefer the system to just work fine the way it is. Will be gaming with these games
Cod MW3, fallout new vegas and whatever else I can get for dirt cheap on steam the video card will be a HD6850 and resolution will only be 1680x1050 max

Why aren't you going with the Core i5-2500K now? Micro Center is currently having a sale where you get up to $60 off a P67 or Z68 board whenever you buy one alongside the i5-2500K or i7-2600K. For around $5 to $25 more (if not less) than either of your options, you probably won't have to worry about upgrading your core platform for several years.

Are those CPU/motherboard combos? If so, you should really do some more shopping around cause you could easily get a i3-2120 with a solid motherboard for that price and it would be a better performer. The new i3's are the best procs on the market when compared dollar to dollar.

Yeah, Bman, considering that MC has other and better sales going on, neither of those options you've listed are intelligent or worth buys for money.

I just want to say from a general point of view that I think the motherboard and memory are also potential factors in your overall experience. But if there's one thing that practically haunts me to this day was a comment from someone insisting that his Intel processor was smoother that his AMD-based machine. I still want to try one build with Intel which may happen in the next few months. I would look at benchmarks.

Based on various benchmarks, Intel has owned the high-end market (for systems costing over $500) for years with its Core 2 Duo/Quad and (first- and second-generation) Core iX processors. We nowadays only recommend AMD either for the diehard fanboys or those who can't afford an Intel system, but in the OP's case, he can easily afford it.

With the i3 line, Intel owns every price point over $100. It sucks but there really isn't much reason to buy AMD at all anymore unless you're upgrading an existing AMD platform. I'm thinking of sticking with them cause I need a motherboard upgrade but don't necessarily need a CPU upgrade (at least not bad enough to shell out an extra $230). Other than situations like, Intel is gonna be your best bet.

Sorry guys I worded the first post so wrong it's not even funny, I was in such a rush to get out the house and to microcenter I didnt even read it before I posted it. Well I am home from microcenter so I will tell you guys what went on today, the right way this time LOL.

Well today I sold my Dell Dimension E520 with a asus 8800gt video card for $200 on craigslist. I had $40 cash on me before hand so I had a total of $240 to try to build a whole new tower minus the corsair cx430 watt psu I already had.

This is what I ended up with and I'll explain the reason why I went the way I did.
Intel celeron G530 sandy bridge 1155 cpu
Biostar H61MLB S1155 mobo
2x2gb crucial ballistix ram
Western digital 320gb blue hard drive
Lite On DVD burner
Cooler Master Elite 371 mid tower case
Walked out the store with a total of $220 and some change, I had a legit windows 7 home premium 64bit os system builders disc at home already and a corsair cx430watt power supply. So I had a total of $240 to spend on the tower minus the power supply.

I used the change from microcenter to put gas in the car since its about a 1hour drive each way. I went this route because I sold my only pc, and needed one today. I am tired of overclocking so it let me get away with using a H61 motherboard to save some cash also. So I am on S1155 right now and finally away from that god awful pentium D processor and store bought dell tower.

In january I will buy a I5 2500 non k version cpu for $150 from microcenter and get a hd6850 video card from newegg. It is such a big difference with this pc compared to the dell I had. I also have twice as much ram but this processor feels alot faster then the pentium D did for sure.

Hopefully you guys understand why I did this the way I did. I am tired of overclocking and just want to build the pc and have it work without having to buy a huge ass aftermarket cooler, then sit there for god knows how many hours testing for stability. I just need something simple that works right.

The older I get the less I want to tinker with stuff, I get a real headache messing around with computer stuff anymore, I'd rather it work just fine when I install it and not have to mess with anything. At least now I have a pc that I can upgrade to a bad ass cpu when I have the spare money, it's all new parts with a warranty and it is pretty fast.

I walked in the store and said I need to build something that will leave me with a upgrade path, this was the only way I could really do it within my budget. This was the cheapest SB cpu that I could get, along with the cheapest motherboard. I dont need anything fancy from a motherboard either so that kept my cost down also. Hard drive prices are so outrageous right now, it's a damn shame I paid more for a 320gb hard drive then I did for my processor lol....

We didn't know that you were trying to build an entire PC tower for around $240. When we read your first post, we assumed that you were only talking about the motherboard and processor combination.

LOL, yeah I didnt realize how I typed it til I got home and read it. Well at least I'm on 1155 now and far away from that Pentium d

Sounds like you got what you were after. You made the right choice with the Intel.

It's way smoother then the old dell, that's for sure. I almost shit a brick when I sold that old dell for $200 today, the guy I sold it too was using a single core p4, 1gb RAM and windows xp. He was pretty happy to get it and didn't even try to negotiate the price

Thats what my wife is using right now. Pentium 4 1.6 GHz. I keep offering to build her a new one but she keeps saying that one is good enough. Fine with me, Ill use the money for my own rig.

Pretty sad though. It wont even play Youtube videos in full screen. Turns them into a slide show!

The guy was pretty enthusiastic when he called me today, I got a good vibe from him and told him come get the pc, a hour later I had cash in hand. I shot the shit with him for a good half hour, he was a pretty cool older gentleman.
