Intel OC boring?

I currently own a E3300, see sig, and previously a E2160, I have really enjoyed tweaking values high and low in order to get the most out of them.

As a hardware enthusiast I am always looking at recent technology and I can't help thinking that overclocking the current gen Intel processors looks boring.

Is there really not any more to the current generation than raising a multiplier and keeping voltage/temp at stable levels?

get x58(socket 1366) then. So many voltages you have to change to get it stable, lots of options that you need to set manually.

Only the very new stuff is easy.
 
I don't have one of the newer chips, but I would actually prefer the "boring" factor to remove variables to get a high OCed chip.
 
Don't get me wrong, getting a good OC fast is great, but it does kill the "personal" part of an OC.

Talking/writing about an OC and only having the multiplier as variables is........ meh.

I had some fun in getting my old E2160 to run with a 1600 MHz fsb and testing if that high an fsb actually was useful, compared to the highest actual clock I could reach.
 
It took me a good part of the day, to tweak my I7 950 to get 4.6ghz stable.

So many voltage tweaks you can do, its almost overwhelming....

Maybe get into the 1366 socket, or 2011 (if you are rich).

I know you can get an I7 950 for around $250, but its not worth even investing in the 1366 chipset when you can get a Sandy Bridge I5 2500k or I7 2600/2700k and get better performance.

But with Sandybridge, you just up the Multiplier...so easy overclocking

It really all depends who the user is.
Personally, I'm a bit of having to tweak 5,000 things to get my CPU running at 5 ghz. I build computers to *GAME* on, not tweak everything. I don't want to deal with having my OS corrupted because the memory timings were out of whack or I went a little too high on the FSB without increasing VTT or something. I just want to game. And that doesn't make me any less [H] than someone who wants to run their CPU at 6 ghz with everything pushed. Don't let the egomaniacs get to you on that--i don't listen nor care about egos.

I know how to tweak. Tweaking is fun, but tweaking is for benchers. I don't bench anymore. I game.

I know this doesn't answer your question....I just like quick and easy, especially with so much stress in my life.

Yes. All I did was add 10% to volts and start raising multiplier until it failed to post. lowered by 1. posted but failed prime95. Lowered it by 1 again until it passed 24 hrs.
 
Say what you will and maybe I'm just turning into an old codger, but I think that Sandy Bridge is the greatest thing since sliced bread! If I can get great overclocks without having to dig through pages and pages of BIOS options then what the heck is wrong with that?

I couldn't be happier with my new i2500k... 4.7ghz at under 1.4v and my TRUE 120 is keeping it nice and chilly even with hours of IBT stressing the cores. All with tweaking like 4 values in the BIOS...
 
Yeah, really love multiplier-only OC's. This 980X has been a dream. Just ticked up the multi to 31, upped the voltage a bit, then win.

You are missing a whole lot of performance with not upping the bclk and RAM speed.

It gets a whole lot smoother the higher you go.

Not really. BCLK changes don't really help all that much. RAM speed only effects synthetic benchmarks for the most part. Even then you can pretty much set certain memory speeds without BCLK adjustments. Not really hard to get to DDR3 1600MHz+ speeds at all even without touching BCLK adjustments.

I was happy back in the day when all you did was pump voltage and get an OC.

Now with this new mobo I have there's all sorts of crazy VRM options, PLL voltage, etc, etc. Too many gauges to flip!

Which are all basically pointless for you...you have the easiest platform to OC on.

OCing these days is a joke, even 775 was a joke compared to something like 939.
 
Some people may enjoy the tuning aspect of overclocking on older platforms but I'm more interested in the best results I can achieve. If this requires great effort, then so be it. If I can have awesome results for very little work I'm all over it.

Oh I agree 100%, I love just changing one or two settings and getting great performance, but I just don't understand how you can complain about it being too difficult(post I quoted before). It's so damn easy these days :)
 
x58 overclocking is easy if you're still on air. you can really only hit 4.4ghz on all 6 cores hyperthreading before you have to convert to water.

Never owned a 939 I jumped from socket A to 775 :(

I have clearly stumbled into a matter of personal preference. 99% of the people on this forum seem to be the type who does not mind sacrificing free time to get free performance out of their PC.
However, the amount of time people are willing to sacrifice varies from person to person,
some just want performance and want it fast, while others like to tinker with every value to get the last drop of extra performance.

The people who spend a lot of time messing around with values spend a lot of time for a little gain, but they are having fun with it and don't feel they are wasting their time.

If I want the option of messing around with values there's socket 1366 and AMD, if I want OC performance fast there's the 2500K.
My E3300 is still fast enough and I will probably not upgrade until Ivy Bridge or next gen Bulldozer is out.
 
If I'm getting a serious rig then I will do whatever means necessary to get the best out of my CPU; lapping, voltmodding, perfect TIM application, etc.

If I'm only getting a rig to game with then I would just get the best-bang-for-the-buck proc out there right now, load some xmp profiles, up the multi and let her rip.

My rig is a 40% benching / 60% gaming so I have no choice but to fiddle with the settings. It also helps to have a Vapochill. :cool:
 
im fine with it being nice and easy lol. performance/price is all that matters to me.
 
What do you expect when overclocking gets calculated into a business model? Of course it gets "boring".

What I hope is that it also gets stable, i.e. less idiots littering the Internet with faulty data because their genitals are lacking in size and they just need that extra MHz over their neighbour. Then, when they grow pubic hair, they realise that stable >> fast and that messing around endlessly for the sake of messing around << just using the damn thing.

Serious now, I dropped the tinkering mindset long ago. I fool around a lot with OSes and stuff, but I need the basics to be stable. If you get delivered crap data the 1000th time because some junk box in a basement is screaming at the edge of operability and probably forgot about correct data long ago, you get tired of it.

In so far I'm all for overclocking being "boring".
 
I understand how you feel. My first CPU I OC was the Pentium D. Trying to get that piece OC without overheating it was hard and it felt good increasing its performance without starting a small fire in my living room.

The current CPUs OC itself when needed or you just increase 2 values and do it yourself.
 
I've been overclocking since the 386 days. It was easier back then as all you really needed to do was setup your jumpers for a higher end processor than what you actually had. You just had to hope it worked like that. Aside from figuring out what the correct jumper settings were, it was extremely easy. Super easy if you actually had the manual for your board or the markings were well done on the board itself. Settings wise I think it was the most difficult with the Athlons. Specifically Socket A, 754, and 939 Athlons. After that it got easier and easier. Now it's ridiculously easy until you want to break that 4.8GHz barrier or so. Then all you need are one or two additional settings to get you over the hump. At that point it's just a matter of keeping it cool. 5.0-5.2GHz on a 2500k or 2600k is easy so long as you can keep your thermals in line. For that you need water cooling at a minimum.

Are we talking about the same 939?! Cause 939 was the EASIEST platform I've ever overclocked on next to Socket 7 with jumpers.

Instant 50 percent OC

On a winchester, NOT a venice.

775 was a god damn comparative nightmare. Took HOURS to get this board to even post when overclocked.

I didn't say it was challenging in general, just more challenging than many other setups that came before or after it. And overclocking S939 varied a LOT by board. The DFI boards were particularly bad to deal with. Then again many of them didn't run worth a damn at default settings. I had difficulty with early steppings of the original Phenom processors. Those were the worst. I've actually fried boards with those.

DFI was pretty well known for confusing BIOS set ups. I learned a lot about overclocking due to trying to find my way around a socket A DFI board and DFI Street.

I remember those days. I had both the dfi lanparty ut nf4 sli-dr and ut p45 t2rs. I appreciated the options on those boards. Once I learned the quirks I was able to dial it in. Not the same no more with the SB boards.
 
My 980X is nowhere near able to get to 4.4GHz on an H60...

same board as you. I can pull off 4.4ghz with an nh-d14, but the temps get into the 93c zone. I go for 4.275 on all 6 cores and turbo cores 1/2 to 4.4ghz using offset voltage loading up to 1.375 vcore and keep it under 84C.

Wow I didnt overclock back in the 386 days, but my first CPU to overclock was the Celeron 400A, which was faster then a pentium 2 and overclocked like a champ.

I do feel old now
 
a question like this is destined to be a polarising one.

personally i see the value in both arguments. i like to tweak, especially when the hardware is new. in most of my new builds i get maybe a few weeks, maybe a month's worth tweaking till i get a clock i'm happy with 24/7 that's 100% stable. with all the settings dialled in, probably won't touch it again for the life of the platform. at that point i just wanna get on with my gaming / productivity work tho at the back of my mind i'm proud the extra free 'go' i got from my gear.

now that i've thought about, i recon you value your PC a bit more (warm and fuzzy feeling?) if you've had to work at whipping your machine into shape.

thing i miss the most is getting a cheap arse CPU and thrashing it till its within a hairs breath away from a top-end processor. just can't do that now with intel's current chips.

someone already mentioned this, think i liked it more when intel was threatened by hardware enthusiasts and tried to actively discourage running their CPU's above specification. when intel embraced the OC'ing community (and milk them for cash via 'X' & 'K' chips), just wasn't 'sporting' any more. kinda like a FPS with 'aim assist' or 'alt-tabbing' out of a game for cheat codes/walkthrus.

overall probably have to agree with OP, outside AMD systems, intel OC'ing/tweaking has gotten a lot 'duller'. if AMD had a more competitive high-end chip, probably be a different story.

Eeep! I thought 72C was the max these chips could safely handle? That's why I don't push vcore beyond 1.318ish. In any case, it'd cost me a bundle to replace this 980x (if I fried it, I'd buy a 3930K or a 3960X), so I don't really want to play too much with fire. 4GHz on 6 cores, hyperthreaded is good enough for me. I do need more GPU power though...
 
Isn't as boring if you want an efficient OC. It could be challenging to get it stable under offset mode, though.

I'm glad it's dull. I use my PC for more than gaming. Results matter. I don't have time to take a month to dial in my system's performance for gaming and work related tasks. I can't really spend more than a couple days at a time doing such things. I'd end up leaving it at stock speeds these days, or close to them if I had to take that much time to get things dialed in. These days I can take a system and overclock it stable, with damned good results inside of a few hours. That's how I like it.

I have fond memories of all the time it took in the past, and all the steps one needed to go through, but honeslty, it was a pain in the ass if I look at it objectively.
 
So "non-Boring" OC means more stuff run out of spec and potentially non-stable?

Having a "Boring" OC has had a lot of side-effects for me, like having the first computer in 10 years that goes into and comes out of sleep properly... usually I have such an aggressive OC that stuff like that tends to break, but not with Sandy Bridge.
 
I agree wholeheartedly with Dan.

I had a great time (and a LOT of it!!) with Socket A. Socket 478 was quite easy. After a couple years of my P4 and then just not using anything but a laptop for a few years, I picked up an AM3 setup and got annoyed. Going 2.6 to 3.0 was easy, and getting to 3.3 took a bit of voltage. I suppose 3.5 would have been possible (C2 stepping) if I really cared to go through everything.

I just don't have the time to play anymore. I'm content with my SB's now, but if I feel I need some extra power, I just reboot, change one BIOS setting, and I'm done. Neither of my setups were bought around the idea of OCing (2500K+H61 and 2400S+P67), but the limits that my setups have should easily be attained without touching voltages. I may replace the 2500K/H61 with an IB/Zxx and OC to whatever keeps my temps in check in my HTPC case (based solely on the TDPs, an IB@4.0 should be about an SB@3.3, and an IB@4.5 would be around an SB@3.7). Again though, this is because all I'd need to do is restart, change one BIOS setting, and get 12-33% (3.3>3.7 or 3.4>4.5) more speed.

If it was more complicated than that, I'd never deal with it nowadays. Between work, family, and maintaining a house, I just don't have the time for it anymore. The time alone I have (staying up late after daughter/wife are asleep) is spent playing whatever game I'm into at the time or researching/learning stuff online. To me, either of those is more fun than spending hours going through blue/white screens, restarting, waiting for whatever benchmarks to run, and then repeating.
