Intel OC boring?

Same here. It took 2 weeks of tweaking to get my Q6600 stable at 3.6, half an hour to get the Q9550 to 4.0, and 5 minutes to get the 2600k to 4.6. It's less of an art than it used to be but I'm no less happy with the results.
 
I'm glad it's dull. I use my PC for more than gaming. Results matter. I don't have time to take a month to dial in my system's performance for gaming and work related tasks. I can't really spend more than a couple days at a time doing such things. I'd end up leaving it at stock speeds these days, or close to them if I had to take that much time to get things dialed in. These days I can take a system and overclock it stable, with damned good results inside of a few hours. That's how I like it.

i can understand where you're coming from. testing and overclocking systems is tied your work. while at work, you want things to be uncomplicated and go smoothly. well at least i do where my work is concerned anyway.

for myself, as tweaking a PC isn't directly related to my work, i don't mind if it takes some time to get right. it is a hobby after all. if it was quick and easy, it would negate the purpose of having hobby.
 
It's perfect. Change 1 number, get the max out of your PC instantly and spend rest of time playing games. That's what I did and loving it.

Yeah, I'd rather spend the time playing games than tweaking BIOS settings. I overclock for performance. I want to be able to enjoy that performance, rather than the idea of getting it.
 
I do both, I actualy enjoy the tweaking as much or more than the gaming. But for SB, getting more than enough for gaming was easy, not much uses more than 4.6Ghz, then I saved an O-clocked profile in the bios, and tweaked at it when I had the time. I would have sworn that 4.8-4.9 was all this chip had, but I was able to coax it to 5.0, and it is no less stable than 4.5 I've been o-clocking since the cachless 266 Celeron days, so I find it more of a hobby, as I have no software that gets any improvement from the 5.0 over the 4.6, not noticably anyway
 
oced my new 2500k to 4.5ghz with ease, i prefer it like this much more. raise multiplier raise voltage done.
 
Boring = stable = good. I don't want to pray I get the right cpu batch, experiment with motherboards, tweak a million different bios configs and reboot my system a hundred times just to get an overclock.

Give me K part at a modest price premium, set the multi (even this is automated in a modern mobo so you don't even have to see the bios), done. I'll take that any day.
 
I currently own a E3300, see sig, and previously a E2160, I have really enjoyed tweaking values high and low in order to get the most out of them.

As a hardware enthusiast I am always looking at recent technology and I can't help thinking that overclocking the current gen Intel processors looks boring.

Is there really not any more to the current generation than raising a multiplier and keeping voltage/temp at stable levels?

Kyle, and most people in this thread, are right in their own way. Looks like the K processors have changed OC on Intel processors. Easy OC = more performance fast and less fun messing around with values and less of a personal OC.
 
get x58(socket 1366) then. So many voltages you have to change to get it stable, lots of options that you need to set manually.

Hahaha so true. X58 was a nightmare to get stable I thought like two weeks to figure out what the heck was going on. This P67+K had nothing to it practically, less than a weekend.
 
Sandys above 4.8 definitely take more than 5 minutes to get stable......

This platform's difficulty curve is just closer to eve online's than anything yet ;)
 
You know they say that the people with the worst maintained cars are mechanics. I spend so much time talking about computers that when I get home I just want to my computer to run. So any more I am happy when it is simple to overclock and build a system as easy as possible.
 
Back in the old school ( like 1995-2000 ) OC was done to get more performance for $, CPUs were slow, the new stuff really expensive. Nowadays, the difference between a $100 and a $999 in daily tasks is more or less impossible to tell if all you do is surf the web, office and a few movies.
OC works like a charm, simple options, deterministic. The difference between a 3GHz SB and a 4.5GHz one can be told only in benchmarks. ( and no, getting from 150 FPS to 200FPS isn't smoother )

If somebody misses the joy of OC, as in tweaking non stop, get a Pentium 3, a Thunderbird (!), get a VIA/Nforce board and see how easy is to get the 20-30% than nowadays comes for granted. :D
Hell, get a Duron/Celeron!!

I still remember the slot 1 P3s on 440BX, in the likes of Abit BF6 or was it BP6, can't remember , trying to get to the magical 133MHz FSB!

Yep. There was a day when a faster processor meant you could see tangible gains in even basic tasks like listening to MP3s, word processing, printing complex PDFs, burning CDs. etc. I remember a day when my computer used to get sluggish when running Winamp and Netscape at the same time. Add in MS Word and fuggedaboudit!

Forget about OC. I think computer HW has become boring. Everything is built into the motherboard and most of the motherboards seem to be copies of each other. Upgrades are only interesting to a small group of people.

Intel knows this, and I'm sure they know that the differences between many of their processors are BS. Who really cares about a .1Ghz gain? They also know that many chips can easily cannibalize the market share of other chips.

What's left to do other than put in all sorts of artificial limitations on so they can maintain different market segments and justify all those chips existing. OC is probably a victim of this. Intel probably made it so easy (and also limited it) so the average person (like me) can say "Oh! I'm going to get a 2500K because it's so easy to overclock. I wouldn't dare to it in the old days, but it's just like flipping a switch. The price premium on the K series is worth it! I'm a hax0r to the max0r."

Tell me about it. I used to be heavily into computers as a kid, modified them to no end. However, as soon as I got a job that involved working with them, and the QC of components continued to decline over the years, my mind got numb to it all. Now I just want my home PC to run, be silent, and not cause any issues. :p I also left that line of work full-time and now just do it as a side-business maintaining the few businesses who were desperate to keep me on.

Life is far too great to spend time worrying about computers.
 
There is still something to tinker around with. Even if it's easy to pull a great oc by just changing the multiplier, it's still fun and beneficial to tweak all the voltages.
 
If you guys stop being babies ( said in a friendly laughing manner ) about your money and overclocks, I promise, it does not get boring. Redline your cpu and performance. Meaning, spend the extra money on good cooling and push the hell out of your memory and cpu. It will take you weeks to find what works.

Who cares if your cpu is pushing 70c - 80c - 85c constantly? Are you really going to take that 2600k with you to the afterlife? Seriously. Go HardOCP or Go Home.

Sure, I got the 4.8ghz like everyone else with little to no effort but that wasn't good enough for me. I will tell you what's the difference between boring and non-boring. Simple, just two words. "Giving up" oh, here's another word, "content". It''s only boring cause you let it get that way. I was or did nether. Dunno about you guys but I had to reach to peak of my systems limit ( within reason ) I will spare you all the details of my journey but since them, I've arrived at 4.9Ghz, lower heat, higher memory speeds and better stability.

now that i've thought about, i recon you value your PC a bit more (warm and fuzzy feeling?) if you've had to work at whipping your machine into shape.

thing i miss the most is getting a cheap arse CPU and thrashing it till its within a hairs breath away from a top-end processor. just can't do that now with intel's current chips.

overall probably have to agree with OP, outside AMD systems, intel OC'ing/tweaking has gotten a lot 'duller'. if AMD had a more competitive high-end chip, probably be a different story.

I guess that I have a warm fuzzy feeling about my OC computer, I know that I am far more pleased about my OC computer than my other computers. This is despite the fact that my media center, not in sig, is the one I use the most.

Getting a cheap crap cpu and performing a massive OC just increases that "warm and fuzzy feeling". Buying a 50$ cpu and getting it to perform like a CPU that cost 3 to 5 times more is just great. I guess this is what I miss the most with Intel and K models, where is the i3 2100K or a 65 watt low clock i5 K model :p

AMD OC looks like fun, but BD is the new big great thing from AMD and they just don't cut it for me. People are having problems with games going BSOD, Power usage is higher than I want to start of with, price seem a little inflated etc. Maybe I will jump on the next revision, especially if AMD gets a cheap low clock version out.
 
I have to agree with the OP. I just got a i5-2500K + Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4 and was stable at 5GHz within 15 minutes. There's really not much to it anymore. Add in another 45 minutes of lowering/fine-tuning voltages and bam, I'm ready to do a finally prime run. Was it anti-climatic? Yes. Is 5GHz still awesome, yes? I'm on to play Skyrim now, so the end result was still the same. I'm with Dan_D on this one - as long as I'm still getting results, I'm happy. :cool:

I think it's pretty damn convenient coming from socket 939. Up voltage to 1.3 up multiplier to 45 then intel burn test. Which thanks to Asus I can run in windows.

If the next chip only requires a single Easy OC button in the bios I'm all for it.
More time using the PC and less time tinkering. I understand this is a hobby, but the majority of us rather have the PC up and running so we can game.

The easier it is to build a PC, the more people will convert from consoles.
