Intel killing off replacable CPUs?

As of right now...

Yes indeed it does appear it will be so.

Unfortunately...

This again...it was shotdown here as a badly mistranslated source.

Updated 11/26/12@3:25pm: One point to add, two OEMs have confirmed to SemiAccurate that they have now been briefed that Broadwell is BGA only. This was done weeks after we first told them about the problem.

Appears they now have solid evidence, or so they say. There probably was a mistranslation in the sense of all CPU's in the Broadwell cycle, but it really shouldn't come to much of a surprise since for the past 2 years we've known Broadwell was the official start of Intel's SoC strategy from then on out.

Great chance for AMD and ARM :)
How so?
ARM CPU's are all soldered on also. AMD will soon be making ARM based server CPU's. I don't see how Intel's choice in the matter has any bearing on competition between ARM and Intel. It might be a chance for AMD, but they have repeatedly dropped the ball on opportunities the past several years.

The article in OP is from Charlie D. There is a reason why his site is called "semi" accurate. He is the same guy who posted this gem:
http://semiaccurate.com/2012/11/19/amd-kills-off-big-cores-kaveri-steamroller-and-excavator/

That article got so unruly that the comments were closed and AMD gave an Official response that it was bullshit.

So the motherboard MFR solders the chip onto a "carrier" device instead of the motherboard itself. You then put the CPU + carrier into a socket. IE. Something like soldering the chip onto a "board" that has a PGA/LGA on the other side.

I'm sure within a chip generation or two, the third party manufacturers would all have standard carriers.

Problem solved.

I really hope this doesn't happen, As it will eliminate aftermarket mobos. Considering that it will make bench marking cpus a huge hassle and troubleshooting whether or not the mobo or cpu is bad Impossible.

wow repost and garbage rumors too.. sure bwell will be BGA but the one after will NOT.

Appears they now have solid evidence,
> Charlie
> solid evidence

LOL

Don't you think that if the information is so well known that OEMs are being briefed that the information would be more widely known than just from a single known liar (who does it to get clicks)? Seriously?

FYI, People never give Charlie credit for the MANY times he has been dead on right.
Or remember when he's wrong many more times than he's ever been right. What's really pathetic about it is that he never admits he was wrong, even when he was dead wrong. His site has no "corrections", just updates, often framed as if the 180 degree turn still means he was right. It's just silly.

and flip side, do you ever see the people saying he lies and is full of BS saying they were wrong when he has proven them wrong.....

No...

works both ways

LOL, I just see people who completely ignore his horrible accuracy record for rumors and defend him every time that bad record is pointed out. :D

He's not a reporter, he's a provocateur who gives his fans what they want, regardless of reality. And his simply just makes things up sometimes. Or more often than sometimes. It's been the model of thereg, theinq and now s/a that he's in the business of making click bait, not objectively reporting news or investigating rumors.

Every day that so many people supposedly know about this plan and there is absolutely no word from those same people (apparently large companies know, yet no employees have leaked this info... sure), the less likely it's true. He's a known liar with several grudges to settle created from his mentally ill mind.

I agree Charlie D is a nutjob who spews quite a bit of nonsense, but you're no better than the people who ignore his failures. I don't know what his exact track record is, but if its 50-50 you're complaining that his glass is always half empty and ridiculing those who claim its half full.. its hypocritical. I'd treat this the same way I' treat any Charlie D rumor: with healthy suspicion. However, multiple sources have come out with little tidbits aside from Charlie so I'd say this one has more credibility than his typical "the voices inside my head tell me nV's yields are awful!"

It's much worse than 50-50. lol

I'm not criticizing his record with reporting on news like product announcements or strategy, however much he often distorts it. His rumor record is horrible, maybe even a bit worse than digitimes, which will publish anything.

And I'm a helluva a lot better than Charlie. I will 1) admit when I'm wrong and 2) post links with corrections if I posted incorrect info previously. He only tries to spin "updates" as showing that he was right about the opposite of what he posted earlier. Nutjob indeed.
