Intel Identifies Chipset Design Error, Implementing Solution

Just so I understand....systems that are affected were produced/shipped after January 9th? I bought my board on the 12th at MicroCenter, so I'm hoping and assuming that mine was manufactured before the issue.

No, it sounds like it is all of them. They just used the term shipped because that was when SB launched.

all i can say about this is their must be a party going on at amd right now

I was thinking the same thing, With chipsets not being readily available again until April 2011, that really gives AMD some breathing room on BD's launch in summer 2011. People who were ready to build now, are going to hold off, and at that point it would probably be worth waiting 2 months or so to see how BD stacks up before buying.

This bug really could be more costly for Intel that just the cost of replacements and new shipments until April.

Disapointing news, especially after going through all the work of finding a stable OC.

So I received my ASUS P8P67 Deluxe board last Friday and it has the dreaded Code 30 bug and will not post out of the box, no matter what. Do I RMA it now and get another possibly faulty board, or wait for a month?

All of the boards in circulation right now are affected by this problem. It may never affect you personally (the failure rate is expected to be 5 to 15% @ 3 years), however all of the boards have the design flaw.

well this sucks. i was going to get 2 sandy bridge mobos. already hvae one. i'll try what anand says and hope for the best :p

Like many I was waiting for the tax man to send me some cash to upgrade to a Sandy Bridge based system. It will be interesting to see whats on the market (if anything) once I actually have the cash in hand. I wasn't planning on using SATAII at all so if the major retailers are still not selling them by then hopefully I can pick one up from a mom and pop shop.

Glad I got in on the Intel Retail Edge deal and built an i7 970 system. I'm sure they'll sell us an i5 2600k for like $120 in a few months too, by then the kinks will have been worked out.

Ok, well I currently have a stable **currently** wonderfully working SB system (gigabyte UD4). It is currently my only machine (meaning if I send the Mobo back, I either have to buy something differnet for now or go without for a few months until replacements are available). If I really don't have anything mission critical on my machine (and I back up to a server each night) - should I just wait until the replacements are widely available and then rip out the MOBO for replacement? or is this going to fry my SSDs? I guess my question is, does this issue just currupt data on the drives? Are the drives able to be formatted and re-used? This is very frustrating, its a lot of effort to "sneak" stuff past the wife and explain why I "need" a new computer. To tear it apart doesn't do much good for my relation ship :)

Whew. Glad I decided to wait to see what Bulldozer brings to the table before building a new system for myself. :D Wish I had bought some AMD stock last week.

It was pretty obvious they were aware of the issue when they pulled all Sandy Bridger CPUs and motherboards from their website :D

well sure, but those who already bought Sandy Bridge boards have no reason to be searching for other Sandy Bridge boards.

everything i have seen points to April is the release of BD. i feel intel is guilty of its own hubris it wouldn't be that much of a problem if amd/nvidia/via/sis where still making chipsets for the intel platform. alias intel strong armed 3rd party chipset vendors out of its eco system and is now paying the price.

That's the funny part. This has almost no impact on AMD's performance, growth prospects, or market position. It's not as though everyone will renounce Intel and run to buy from AMD.

when #1 screws the pooch it effects everyone in the computer/laptop ecosystem 8 million+ sandy bridge products are essentially scrap. this puts the #2 player amd in a very good position since it products are unaffected by intels troubles.

companies care about one thing a SKU on the shelf that is making them money. they do not give a crap about performance period. so yes this is good for amd

Not like AMD sells bad product though. It only really matters to us benchmark whores in the [H], but to everyone else AMD is just as blazing fast as Intel's offerings.

I'm very content with my Phenom II x3, and I have a Core i5 laptop at work and they both feel equally snappy.

So it's no real surprise shareholders are slapping Intel on the hand for their screw-up and AMD's stocks go up a little bit.

I was referring to the large customers (OEMs such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc) who purchase in huge quantities. They likely will not switch to a competitor's product because of something like this. The overclocking community is a very small minority.

This is clearly reflected in the stock fluctuation. Intel's market price dropped 1.5% and instantly rebounded. By the end of the day, the stock price was back at its original level.

I've been a fanboy of AMD since socket 7 and was thinking maybe I am to hard on Intel then this happens.

remember about the snafu concerning the compiler for Intel? it boosted the performance for Intel processors but not others?

So I guess I'll continue to be a fanboy for the AMD processor...

I got a message back from a higher-up at MicroCenter that in time, roughly 8 weeks, anyone who bought a board at MicroCenter will be getting an e-mail, explaining that they can bring the board in for a swap to a fixed version.

Thx. for the heads up concerning this online computer business, looks good. :D

I am hoping I can return my UD3P and upgrade to a UD4 or UD7. The retailer I bought it from has already sent me an email about returning it, and they gave me 2500 reward points. :)

I see your point. But I think this is much more of a short-term reaction and adjustment rather than a long-term, sustained transition from #1 to #2. We're not worried here at the office...although bonuses will take a hit. :(

Sandy Bridge? sounds more like Sandy Vagina.

Alright, so reading online I've come across everything from "shipping in late February" to "won't be available til sometime in April" and I'm not sure which is likely to be more accurate.

When are we going to be able to purchase the processors/motherboards again from places like Newegg? I know that there isn't likely to be a specific date yet, but the different in February and April is significant. Anyone have any idea?

My board and cpu are on a truck right now waiting to be delivered to my office. Do I even bother putting the thing together? Return the whole damn thing to NewEgg? I have no idea what to do.

You best call NewEgg and talk to someone or else they charge you a restocking fee and make you pay return shipping.

Intel ordered by courts to continue PCIE support, due to Sandy bridge, Intel still doesn't support USB3.0, due to light bridge. Finally 2 ports of sata 6gbs support. Screw Intel when they want me to go all Intel all the time I'll be using AMD. Their cpus cost less, their southbridges support sata 6.0 & usb 3. they still make a decent video card. Intel is too full of themselves & fos.
