Any of you guys know how the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 performs? Just need to know because i'm thinking of grabbing a centrino laptop and I would like to do some gaming. The thing is its the only graphic option on the Sentias from alienware.

If it is anything like the Extreme Graphics in the 845G chipset you can wow your friends with 10 FPS in UT2003 at 640x480 lowest settings:p

Intel's website says it is a 256-bit 4 pipe card w/ DX8 support. I wouldn't expect a whole lot.

Yea..sad to say but I owned one of them. I know, go ahead and laugh me out of the forum :( money was tight.

It's not *that* bad, but it's not great, either. It's about equal to a GF2MX200. As you can see from the second link, the ATI IGP9100 is much faster.

overview: http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030903/integrated_graphics-02.html (THG only did benchmarking at 1024x768 and above)

benchmarks @ 640x480: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1452&page=5 & http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1452&page=6 <-- the author is incorrect about the IEG2 only using 16MB. It can use up to 48MB or 64MB, depending on available memory and how much memory is required (resolution, color depth, double/triple buffering, etc).

FWIW, I ran intel extreme 3D 2 (845 & 865) and was able to play BF42 & UT2003....at low settings.

Quake 3 looked good though!

Why not Alienware?
i think this is one of those:

how about a pizza and a f.ck? what, you don't like pizza?

sorry, couldn't resist.

Intel Extreme is not a performance platform by any degree of imagination. it works fine in 2d, and unless you're running a 5-year-old game, don't even think of 3d.

Alienware == rebadged Clevo (Sager) or Uniwell. Which means you're paying $500 or more for the name, and NOTHING more. The last series of Alienware laptops were the top of the line Sager, with a paint job (that they charged $150 more than Sager would), and an additional 10-15% markup, just for the name.

They are nothing special; NOT worth the money.

The ONLY real reason I was considering alienware was because of the user upgradable graphics. It would really help my bank account out in the long run for gaming. Todays games are so dependant on video cards that I can actually afford to have a laptop as a solution for gaming. A couple years back, a laptop as a full gaming rig was a joke because if anyone actually wanted to keep up to date with the games you would have to look into getting a whole new laptop. Which is ridiculous needless to say. Not so today. I'm looking to replace my desktop with the laptop. I've heard wonders about the emachines 6805/6807....but it just doesnt fit the bill. Any suggestions on user upgradable GPUs?

There are MANY companies that offer user upgradable graphics. Dell, HP/Compaq, Sager, etc. Shop around more.

Realistically, the entirity of the laptop will get out of date at about the same time. I was laptop-gaming on a GF4 MX till just a short while ago...

Generally, it seems that actually upgrading the video doesn't happen much on these things. Companies come out with a whole new model when there gets to be enough of a reason to change, and more often than not, the cards are not compatible between the models (8200 vs 8500).

I got the eMachines. When it gets out of date, I'll sell it and get a whole new system.

Personally, I'd suggest a VooDoo.... they're sexy, upgradable graphics, and perform great. Also not overpriced for what you get.

I have a sager notebook with Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics, p4 2.6c, and 512 pc3200. All for around $2200 and that was about 6 months ago. At the time a similar AlienWare was about $3000 - uhhhh no way.
Now I think this notebook can be had for around 1800-1900. But my sager didnt come with - cough!! - alien adrenaline video accelerator, whatever the hell that is. Im gettin 125 fps solid on sof2 and c&c generals runs smooth too.....

do not get a laptop for gaming.. plz I wish I could convince the whole world that you are paying for a friggin overpriced peice of sh!t hardware that in most all cases cant do more than stock settings and will have an lcd that would be ghosting the crap out of your games if you hit more than 30 fps and then again.. if you really want to grab a friggin piece of shit lappy.. grab one w/ mobility 9700 whenever that comes out and will be more expensive than 2 whores on crack and a decked out rig..

(this is my laptop for gaming rant.. every fucking thing is exaggerated)

(p.s. alienware is what I like to call overpriced piece of mother.. shit!)

I get a 50% overclock on my 9600 in my M6805. The lcd is plenty fine for gaming, and while it doesn't hold a candle to my NEC FP2141, it doesn't HAVE to. It's portable, and it will play games. And, with an Athlon64 and mb RAM, it cost all of $1300.

I would like to try one.. link? 1300 is the first reasonable price on a decked out lappy that Ive seen in my entire life.. (no pun intended really)

2x rebates.
They've really cleaned up their act. It's a mucho sweet lappy. :)

Athlon64 3000+, Radeon 9600 64mb (OC to turbo speeds EASY), 512mb PC-2700 (upgradable to 2gb), 60gb HD, CDRW/DVD, 15.4" Widescreen, :)

oh man those specs are sweet.. tell me more.. nothing like user experience.. i might grab one.. 1300 bucks is quite low for a lappy.. hows the screen on that thing?

and battery life..

Man thats almost FX5200 Pooower:D NOw if only the Bio's can be flashed to an mx440 an we might be in 800X600 bliss:eek: :p

and just for the record.. intel extreme 2 aint that bad.. i lived w/ intel extreme 1 (for a month) and completed freelancer and impossible creatures on that damn thing.. i think extreme 2 would be a tad better.. but for serious gaming purposes.. nothing short of a mobility 9600..

btw I play ut2k3 at 640 rez and lowest details in office sometimes.. on intel graphics (before extreme).. also quake 3 and warcraft 3 ran fine albeit in 16 bit only.. extreme 2 has 24 bit..

if you cherish 640 or 800 rez then grab a piece of shit laptop.. the only laptop i will ever buy would be something equal to or above what Iopoetve posted

You moron, making statements that aren't even based in reality, and obviously with no personal experience.

Did you see that I was getting 125 FPS in a Q3 engine game? And thats 32 bit, 1400x1050, highest settings in game. Thats a bit different than the 30 FPS you are trying to pawn off.

My desktop system is thouroughly smoked by my laptop. Albeit my desktop runs a GF4 ti 4600 and an AMD Athlon @ 1600. But this is still a decent setup nonetheless, nothing to scoff at. As far as ghosting is, I've had zero problems. The only issue I have with my laptop is the battery life. I can only play games for about 3-3.5 hrs on batteries, which isn't all that bad considering its running a desktop CPU in it.

So please try not to give advice to someone when you haven't a clue as to what you are talking about. With the anonymity of the internet, someone might take your ignorant rants as truth.

look in the Mobile Computing section for more info...I have quite a few posts (A FAQ included) in there...it seems that about 25% of the new threads deal with the M680x

I second this mans statements, more info.

As stated above Intel expreme is not that bad. At my work computer which has Intel Extreme graphics I can run many of the todays popular games, at lowest res ofcourse, but it does get the job done.

It's wonderful :D

Really wonderful... great for playing games and watching movies. I used to be a bitch about ghosting, but it ghosts about as much as my old USUXGA from dell, which means barely at all. Enough that I can ignore it. :)

That Emachine M6805/M6807 is pretty sweet.

I just wish it would actually stay on the shelf long enough for me to get one. For the longest time I've been running happily with a handheld and a uber-desktop machine.

I never thought in a hundred years I'd think the best laptop (without spending a fortune) out there was a Emachine with an AMD... Times change.

Intel eXtreme2 is ok for some gaming at 640x480 with no extra visual enhancements... But if you are going to do that why even bother?

intel extreme 2 is by no means excellent, but it DOES get whatever you throw at it done.
it has some game issues, but its designed for power savings, not performance.
it + low volt pentium-M = 4-5 hour battery.
it runs warcraft 3 beautifully, unless you have over 200 units of course.
as for dx8 support, there is none. it doesnt even have a hardware T&L unit.

I dont really see the CPU as the problem with todays laptop and tomorrows games. Its the GPU. I mean games havent really caught up with the CPU aspect of gaming from what I have experienced. 1ghz AMD, 256mb, geforce2mx400 ran call of duty, max payne 2 and freelancer with mid-high end settings excellent. When I switched the graphics card with a 9000 radeon pro I couldnt believe what I was missing! And thats just a 9000 pro! So a laptop with a 9600/9700 vid card is HEAVEN to me and would be perfect for LAN parties and bonus as a tool for class.

You won't learn anything in class with that graphics within arms reach, youll be gaming!

If you're wanting to save money then build your own computer instead of paying for a prebuilt system.

We're talking about a laptop here. Your suggestion is, well, a little impossible.
