Intel DX58SO auxiliary power - no POST?

I just got an Intel DX58SO motherboard, and I'm using it with a Core i7 965 3,2GHz CPU. Everything works fine as long as I don't connect the power supply to the auxiliary power connectors (the Molex and SATA power connectors on the board). If I connect the auxiliary power, the board doesn't initialize properly - no video and no POST.

I have only one PCIe card (GTX 280), so I don't believe I actually need the auxiliary power - I think it's needed only when you have more than one power-hungry PCIe card. However, it's weird that connecting the auxiliary power hangs the board. It doesn't matter if I connect the Molex or the SATA power - it hangs in both cases.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with this board? I don't know if it's normal (because I have only one PCIe card), or I have a defective board.

Thanks!

I just exchanged my motherboard for another DX58SO, and the new one had the same problem of not coming up properly when auxiliary power is connected, so I decided to try a different power supply, and that fixed the problem. The problem appears when using a Corsair HX1000W, but not when using a Corsair TX750W.

Bizarre - I can't explain it...

Hmm. Must be specific to this board, or we'd have heard a lot more about this by now. The HX1000 is very popular.

Take a look at page 54

Use of the 1 x 4 auxiliary PCI Express
graphics power connector (Figure 30, C) or the SATA-style auxiliary power connector
(Figure 30, B) is required with ATX12V power supplies when using PCI Express
graphics cards that can consume up to 75 W.

I am pretty sure that is only required if said PCI-E card does not have its own power connectors (i.e. uber video cards always have their own power connectors).

I have an older Intel board with an 8800GTX and I dont use that auxiliary power connector. *shrug*

I am about to power up my dx58so, and I am also unsure to connect this or not. but reading from the manual its only needed with a ATX12V supply. I have a HIPER 630W TYPE M which is a EPS12V/ATX12V supply.

The HX1000 is a EPS12V/ATX12V, where as the TX750 is just a ATX12V so that may be the reason you do not need to connect the AUX power.

I've got two of these boards, I connected all of aux power. Using TT and OCZ power supplys. Everything works, latest BIOS installed.

I also just purchased an Intel DX58SO motherboard, and configuring it with one PCIe graphics card (GeForce 9500 GT). My question is also about the "auxiliary power connector (Figure 30, C)" on page 54 of Intel's Product guide. Is the wire colors correct as shown in the pin out for the 4pin auxiliary power connector in Figure 30,C on page 54 of Intel's product guide? Shouldn't the colors be Pin 1 yel, Pin 2 blk, Pin 3 blk, and pin 4 Red? I do not want to short out my supply via the mother board!!

I use a 4870 and dont use the AUX power. No need to w/ video cards that are directly powered themselves.

The auxiliary power connector is not required if you are using the 24-pin ATX connector. If you use a 20-pin connector, the auxiliary power should be connected.

This.

Intel always has these extra power connex (back to BadAxe 1). I have a BadAxe2, and a BoneTrail - I don't use the extra power connex on either one.

One machine has a low-power 2600Pro, and one is my 4850HD, which gets it's own power.

In my current setup I've got the OCZ Gamestream 850 and its using 2 out of the 3 mobo power plugs. The 24 pin by itself would not boot. The 24 pin plus the 8 pin in the middle both allowed me to boot and is still running that way today. I've only left the molex unplugged. Also my XFX 5870 is powered directly by the PS and there are no other PCI adaptors being used just video card.

Maybe it's the 5870 causing me to need both? I dunno but it needs both to boot so I left it like that.

Latest BIOS installed also fwiw.
