Hmm, the Intel page you linked says 4...

But it does have 1394b, which is awesome, first time I've seen that in a motherboard, usually it is just 1394a... could be worth the tradeoff.
 
too bad this board will be outdated as soon as the 985 chipset comes out. And knowing intels history will be about 3 months! ;) But it is a nice board for intel...
 
I'm loving the heatsinks and the overall fanless design but whats really gonna be a deciding factor for my next mobo (AMD or Intel) is the spacing between the crossfire or sli pci-e slots.

This board looks very busy and from the one pic, I cant tell if there is 2 slots between each 16x pci-e slot or just one. I want my next mobo to have at least slots between the cards so that dual slot cooling solutions will not be hampered by being up against the next card.

Can you dig???

965 will be the next chipset released, you won't see 985 for another year and a half at least.

I have heard this too, but lets cross our fingers that it is true. I have not been happy with Intel's super fast chipset refreshes lately.

965 will be the "value" edition of the next chipset, Broadwater. You will also see a 946 (IIRC thats the new number) which is a 945/965 "hybrid" in the next couple quarters. Can't really say much more than that on 946.

SATA, unlike PATA, is *not* a master-slave relationship. If your drives support port-chaining (a strategy borrowed from SCSI that works like daisy-chaining) you *could* theoretically hang up to one hundred sixty eight devices per SATA port. However, I have no reports of any SATA devices, either internal OR external, supporting port-chaining, which means that you need to either use custom cables or use one device per port (rather difficult if you want to use SATA RAID). My current P4C800-E Deluxe has eight SATA ports (four native); however, the biggest problem I face with SATA is that my *immediate storage* needs are such that they can be handled by a single drive of *average* (200 GB) size, and even a drive like Hitachi's 7K500 would be overkill in terms of both capacity and performance. (Heck; "Fort Max", my current SATA-150 boot drive, isn't even based on the DiamondMax 10 series of 2005, but on the *original* SATA DiamondMax of 2004! The drive itself is less than a year old; however, the cost of drives since it was built has continued to go nowhere but down; I'm actually expecting the cost for *retail* drives to stabilize below $1USD/GB in 2006 (that is one buck US per gigabyte for retail drives; OEM drives are a, or in some cases, below this price point today). Unless you are upgrading to future-proof, it's hard to eke out performance gains from upgrading the usual suspects such as processors, RAM, and storage devices (magnetic OR optical) is you have any hardware that was manufactured within the past two years.

The big item, however, is video, especially HD video. Until you can transcode it and move it to offline storage, it still chews up big hunks of magnetic media space. And that is what is driving the desire for larger and larger drives (and the greater interest in RAID arrays). It's also why I've kept my own idea for a pair of two-drive RAID arrays (one backing up the other) on the back burner (as opposed to simply throwing the idea out): I may simply use the array for video storage.
 
What does 975X do, besides flex memory, that 955X didnt do? AFAIK its just an improved memory controller without a whole lot in terms of added compatibility. Theres a lot of talk right now about Conroe not running on current 975X boards, so I'm just trying to understand the hype about this board.
 
IINM, all that I've been hearing around here: much improved cooling around the CPU area, particularly the troublesome MOSFETS (which apparently were a PITA to keep cool). :)

I see Newegg finally listed this board on there site even though its not in stock. Just one question, does this board support Crossfire? According to Newegg it has 1 x16 slot, 1 x8 slot and 1 x4 slot. Im assuming it does, because if im not mistaken, Crossfire divides the 2 x16 slots into 2 x8 slots, so basically the x16 slot will be lowered to a x8 slot. Am I correct? This board looks really sweet, love the color layout of it!!! Im not an overclocker in the processor area, so that feature is not necessary and from what I hear, Intel mobos are for the most part rock stable if you dont overclock.

Also, this is a little off topic, but since im on the subject, would this ram work with this mobo:

Like I said, I dont overclock so some simple Value Select ram will do the job just fine. I just want something that will work and not give me any headaches and that doesnt cost a arm and a half.
 
Yes - that ram would work with the system board.

My bundle pack just showed up recently - checking out [H] to see what people have been getting/using, etc on the board.

Although there is nothing wrong with value ram, I recommend running something a tad nicer.

2 PCI Express controllers in the MCH enable either 1 x 16 or 2 x 8 operation for the 16 PCI Express lanes.
 
The rumor mill says that there is a possiblity later that it will support both Crossfire and SLI - but holy cow is this thing a powerhungry board.
 
Can someone tell me if you have to have the "Auxiliary PCI Express Graphics Power Connector (optional)" plugged in? Or is that only if you do not want to use the PCI Express power plug on your graphics card?
***It is the 4 pin molex connector near the CPU.

 
I'm planning to OC, but haven't got the rest of my parts (PSU) and I'm torn between spending 200 for the one I have picked out and using that extra money towards the ram to get some Crucial Ballistic.. going to show this thing my OC face.
 
Currently running 800mhz mem fsb with the Patriot ram and the 4-4-4-12 timings with 2.2v

The stuff runs hot. Way hot.

My proc is running very hot (Intel D 950) and I have a ThermalTake Big Typhoon on my board. Peaks out at 60c and idles at 45-50c.

I will oc the cpu later.

So far I'm impressed.
 
mike that is a nice board but if your going to wait that long . wait a little longer and get a conroe cpu/ board and you won't be kicking yourself later
 
Awesome. Give a week or two after that date for dissemination into the market, and we're good to go.

One thing I really wish was that all hardware retail boxes posted their version numbers next to the model number. Would make it SOOO much easier to request a certain version number when ordering from an e-tailer, etc.

I remember back in the RDRAM days when the ASUS P4T533 was compatiable with Intel's very first ever Hyper Threaded CPU if, and ONLY if you had PCB rev 1.03 or something like that...its been a while.

You see my point I'm sure.

Just look at freaking Linksys...almost all their products have several revisions. Its almost like buying collectible card game booster packs and hoping to find a rare (the latest version) LOL!

Why? They never said that 975 would support Conroe. Why should they have to pay because people bought a product with the HOPE that it would support something?

Ummm no they're not. Newegg has the full line up now. And a quick check of froogle.com turns up tons of other sellers like Tigerdirect, etc..
 
Why did you chose the Cedar Mill instead of a Presler 920 or 930?

I set one up in my dad's rig, I wasn't impressed at all. Couldn't find any OC options in the bios, only options for voltage etc... Where are you guys seeing these oc settings?

The OC options are in the same place as the voltage options, theres a place to change the FSB speed by a percentage.
