Intel Core I7 6950X Extreme Edition Broadwell-E CPU

3-4GB were upper mid-range,

I still have one of the 4 GB DeathStars up in the attic somewhere. I partitioned it into C, D and E because having all 4 GB in one partition would have been just too much to handle!

I think the i7-6950X is a fantastic SKU, but for the price, it should have Xeon features as well, such as ECC and dual CPU support. I have no problem paying a premium price for a premium product, but I think that Xeon features should come with the Xeon price tag.

The i7-6950X is an ultra premium SKU that was sorely needed at the top of the SKU stack. An Extreme Edition should be truly Extreme and not just a warmed over K SKU and this part fits that bill well. By having the price where it is, it becomes a more exclusive part and the very best part should be as such. My only wish is that Intel adds the missing Xeon features...doing so would definitely encourage more sales.

People complaining about the price have nothing to complain about...the 8-core K SKU is near the same price as the i7-5960X was, so little has changed on the mid range. The low end SKUs are also nearly the same price again. Intel has simply offered an ultra premium halo product for those who want to spend a little extra for a better part that better meets their needs. I commend them for it and would like to see more parts of the sort in the future (with the Xeon features maintained, of course)...;)

My new arrival...:)

N4CR , we are on the same page I think.
I do video editing/GoPro stuff on Adobe CC.....
I'm on the list for a pair of e5-2687w-v4's.

Very expensive , but I'm trying to get into 4k video.
I hope it's enough.

:)

Please let us know how that goes! Also wondering about dual socket this time around too. Also looking to move to 4k in the next year and a little concerned about how much more time it'll take in a single socket too.

Seen the open source/crowd funded 4k camera yet? That's the next leap/pitfall.. no more proprietary crap, I like being able to repair my own electronics as my cameras can get some pretty [H]ard use..

It's gonna go $$$$
The cpu's /mobo are not even out yet so I've got time to save , but I think it's fair to say this next mobo/cpu combo will cost more than my last 2 rigs !!
----
I'm glad people are working on the 4k stuff....
What I really want is this : I don't mind downsampling.

CAMERAS in the RED Digital Cinema Store

LOL! I don't think I'll beat the last two rigs but it will be close. Making me feel guilty! Will be doing some marketing with a major manufacturer in futue, they're keen to pay in gear for some of the work, so I'll see what I can weasle out of them ;)

Red cameras are my dream rig.... worked around some Arris over the last year and some phantoms, very neat bits of kit but sooooo expensive, not to mention my main line of work can destroy such cameras instantly if mistakes are made. Can pick up older red stuff for >15k used these days.. still an awesome deal if you're not doing slowmo stuff. Such amazing picture quality and 'look'. Reds are my preferred camera. But all the high end stuff is pretty impressive.

Didn't know they had this new sensor though.

I'm mostly semi-pro freelance but more casual. But want to do more. Current rig and camera cost me zilch with this in mind, good investments and all paid for themselves a few times over. I'd expect much the same from your usage scenario too.

Best way to a glorious rig(s) is to make them work for their keep!

There are actually e5-2687w-v4's on amazon thru a 3rd party now....2500$ US.

There's also 14 core versions and the 22 core ones thru normal retail...
I'm thinkin 2-3 months for the whole lineup of broadwell Xeons.

:D

Also ;
Nice chip ! , I do like the new boxes.

+1

Mine arrived a few days ago.
