Intel core 2 duo E4500 posting 1/4 speed

I have a question, I just got an evga nfroce 680i board and a Intel core 2 duo E4500 2.2 ghz chip (socket 775). I just got eveything put together and when it booted up the cpu posted " Main Processor: Intel core 2 Duo cpu 550MHZ(50x11) ,2 cpu. I not sure why it is doing this, eveything is still set to auto. any thoughts
 
:confused:What is it reporting in the BIOS? In the main BIOS screen there should be a setup page to adjust voltages, ect... In this area it should Identify your CPU as what you stated. Does it do this? Have you installed an operating system? If so, does it report accurate processor type/speed?
 
could be power saving......i have the same cpu, and when im not using it much it will drop down to 6X200 for 1.2 ghz, but i believe 6 is the lowest the multiplier is supposed to go.
 
When I go into the bios it says 2.2ghz and fsb 800mhz. I was just wondering why it post to 550mhz on bootup. However I just got this put together last night, so I don't have any OS on it yet.
 
my guess, old bios does not recognize the CPU properly and defaults to that weird low speed.

Are you using Vista? If you are it could be the power management is running/setting either on Balanced or Power Saver. It shuold run at full speed 2.2GHz when you are taking advantage of the cores.

Open Control Panel>Power Options> and check High Performance if you want it constantly running 2.2GHz. I left my Q6600 on Balanced since I have it OC to 3.1GHz at 1.3Volt. It's running at 2.0GHZ on 1.14Volt on power saving(when I'm not taking advantage of teh cores) and it keeps my cores a bit cooler.
 
Speedstep.......CPU idles under normal conditions.
Can be disabled in BIOS.
Needs to be if OCing.
Also may not be recognized in BIOS yet, if the current BIOS isnt compatable, then it will do all sorts of odd-ball things.
My guess is speedstep.

Don't spread fud, it doesn't need to be disabled if overclocking, mine is not disabled and I'm far from having a mild overclock.

- fixed! he's not spreading fud, every single major c2d OCing guide tells you to disable speedstep and all of the other weird processor features (I do leave virtualization enabled though, since I use it for my VMs)

I think what he was trying to say is that it might cause issue and not will. A lot of OC guides don't want to tackle it because they don't hear bitchy whiny people telling them their guide sucks if they can't get it to work right.

I'm not trying to spread bad information......it will reduce clock speed under idle conditions and I thought it might be the case here, althought it could just be a BIOS issue not recognizing the CPU and reporting back wierd data.

Most OC guides I have read strongly suggest disabling speedstep. If I was wrong I certainly am not above being corrected.:D

You're right. Speedstep doesn't lower the FSB. It adjusts the multiplier and voltage.

Ranger's point is you do not need to disable it, despite what the guides tell you. However, it may be easier to OC with it disabled. Many people re-enable it after getting a stable OC set. Some boards still won't re-enable it if you have the CPU overclocked without the default voltage, like the Gigabyte boards.

@OP: E4500 is a new CPU, so you most likely need a BIOS update.

My statement should prove you otherwise, it is not necessary to disable speedstep while overclocking, plain and simple, I'm not going against your overclocking guilds, i'm not going against your "knowledge", all I am simply saying is speedstep doesn't HAVE to be disabled when overclocking. You know, I was just pointing out a couple of references that I use.
You seem to really want to be a total ass about this. Please dont give me an attitude.
I'm not arguing about anything. I was wrong about Speedstep's method of adjustment and for that I humbly ask your forgiveness.:eek:
How you overclock your stuff is your own business. I was just pointing out one guide that I like and one way to do things.
Speedstep,by what ever means,will,under some conditions,throttle down a processor; I have seen many posts/people confused by this and simply offered a suggestion to the guy's question. I think Bill Parrish was right on the nose, the BIOS is the issue here.
