Hey all.

I'm trying to throw together a super-budget server with parts I have laying around. Saving money on every part possible is key.

Does anyone know if this Intel HSF that came with my retail package Core i7-920 a year ago will fit on a socket AM3 CPU?

There seem to be many coolers that are compatible with oth LGA and AMx solutions, but I didn't know if this goes for all of them.

If this won't work, whats the cheapest effective cooler for an 80w TDP Phenom II X3? The machine will see full loads on occasion, but will never be overclocked.

Your input is much appreciated.

if it's "laying around" can't you just throw it on there and see if it fits?

A core2 or i7 stock fan will not work on AM3. The retention mechanism is totally different.

I could, if I actually had an AM3 to test it on (I'm still in the conceual phaze you see.)

The mobo and CPU are the only two parts that I don't have laying around.

Good to know. Thank you.

I guess I will go ebaying for an AMD Stock cooler. Hopefully I can find one at a bargain price from someone replacing their stock cooler with a higher end one.

post up a thread on the for sale section and see if someone will give you one. or just have you pay shipping

no it wont, the reason alot of coolers work on both is because for intel, there is a mounting bracket to use, my Core Contact freezer came with a plastic bracket that came with the cooler that pushes into the holes for s775 or s1366, and then mounts the same as AM2/AM2+/AM3
