Intel 'bundling' graphics processor with new Core 32nm CPUs

This should be an interesting development to observe and watch. Intel is aiming primarily at value and midrange price markets. I am particularly interested in this "hot-swapping" feature between integrated Intel GPU and discrete GPU that article mentions.

It would be interesting to see, if Intel is just testing the waters, or if they are fully committed to this idea.

Interestingly, high-end markets, who will be getting "Gulftown" (a successor to "Bloomfield") will not have the pleasure of enjoying integrated GPU inside their CPU. Does that mean that Intel understands the fact that enthusiast community will never accept this? :rolleyes:
 
I don't think intel is really aiming to get any of the enthusiast graphics card community.
 
Basic graphics chip is all it needs to be, and all it should be imo. Having an integrated GPU is good or bad for upgrade-ability depending on how you look at it. Need a new gpu? Buy a new cpu, Intel would love that.

But for people that just need a better GPU an expansion card has always been the best performing solution. But a basic GPU on the CPU provides inexpensive graphics for the unintensive masses, and keeps the chips relatively cheap (compared to a full bore high perf. design) for the enthusiasts. I don't think that the low performance nature of the chip is the reason why the high end processors won't get it, despite all the accusations.

Enthusiasts won't accept it? Think again. It's pretty nice to have complete HD decoding done by the gpu and not my cpu. I quite like the idea. At no point should it be a high end solution.

integrated GPU on northbridge, meet northbridgeless motherboards. Solution, move the GPU along with the northbridge. I know its a startling development, but we've known about it for like 18 months+.

Also, no. It means s1366 still has a northbridge.

This seems like a really good idea for laptops, where you don't really need to swap in the latest graphics cards, and probably are not used for high end gaming.
 
I'm assuming that these new GPUs will be like GMA950 and 4500 and will have no hardware overlay support? One of my apps uses it extensively, and it runs like a dog using Intel integrated graphics of any persuasion due to a software driver being used instead of a true hardware overlay.
 
If you have need of a gulftown processor, you probably need some kind of discrete graphics. Either a Quattro/Fire GL type card or a high end gaming card. If you're using a gulftown for business desktop use, you are wasting a lot of money.

or you are a developer, and you don't give a shit about the gpu, but you can save hours a week when your code compiles faster... also our finance people run some reports and analysis that can take two hours a shot of their local pc, they don't need gpus either.

Unless they are smart and have started coding their algorithms to take advantage of GPGPU functionality
 
I am curious what this will do to ATI and nVidia, it seems to me that the market for low power gpus to handle web browsing and "aero" is a lot larger than those of us willing to drop a few hundred bucks on enthusiast hardware. What happens when dell and HP and all start building their computers without the G310 or 240s? Will we be seeing more 8800-9800 re-branding and higher prices?

That situation already exists with older Intel IGPs on the northbridge. There will always be a market for "premium" graphics.

This is actualy making me wonder if AMD will follow and put out a simmilar CPU / GPU combo chip? I bet their GPU portion woln't be as sucky if they do.
 
I heard that this new GPU sucks, can anyone confirm?

It gets good battery life for laptops, It is an awesome laptop gpu when you just want fast enough for anything 2d such as hd video acceleration such as blu ray. It can play recent games at horrible resolutions at a decent framerate. It can play old games at decent frame. It is perfect for laptops.

It is perfect for the overall market penetration for hd playback (h.264 and other video formats) for now even cheap oems such as acer/compaq/hp won't be skimping on a gpu and bundling it with crap such as the nvidia 6150/7100. Thus we have market progression on high def video content.

Yet compared to real discrete gpus such as the 9600gt or a 4650 are about 4 times faster than this gpu.
 
If you want to use the integrated GPU's you need a motherboard with FDI. Currently only H55/57 have FDI on them.

I see no reason why you can't use just the CPU on a p55 board.

Intel already dominated the IGP market anyway. Clarkdale makes a lot of sense for low-power notebooks, HTPCs, and normal PCs for people who don't do any gaming, but there will always be a market segment that will not be able to do without discrete graphics cards - namely people like us.
