I have a asus a8n-e and i am using the on board sound currently, but i have an old sound blaster live card from an old pc, would i get better sound using that card?

Depends on how good the SB card actually sounds to you vs. onboard. It's likely that the live card will sound a tad better but the realtek alc850 is implemented pretty good on your paticular mobo and get's regular driver updates for newer games and live cards don't. If it were an audigy2 card i would say yes use a seperate card, but in this case i would just say stick to your onboard.

It will help in gaming as then the CPU is not doing all the crunching for the sound.
