Intake/Exhaust, does it matter?

Does it really matter if you have the fan as an intake or exhaust when mounted to a radiator?
 
Its not as effective but will not affect fan life or anything like that. Will not hurt anything but might reduce cooling just a little. So pull if you can but if push is the only really good way your fans will mount, dont worry too much about it. And if you can make a thick gasket or a shroud to move the face of the fan at least 1/2 from the rad fins its really not a big deal to have them push.

I cant claim to understand it perfectly but it has to do with pushing the air thru the fins in a more or less directional manner based on how the fan creates airflow (not uniform) vs creating a low pressure area behind the fan which pulls air thru the fins in a more uniform manner.

LOL think of trying to push cooked pasta thru all the holes in a strainer as opposed to sucking it thru. (cooking a little lunch atm :p )
 
IIRC, Push+Pull > Pull > Push, but the differences are so negligible. Push can tend to be a little more noisy as well. Because the differences are so negligible, Push+Pull usually isn't employed over a simpler pull config because of noise and space considerations. That said, with extremely low cfm fans (undervolting or whatnot), the gains from a push+pull are a little greater.

As far as intake/exhaust, it depends on your setup. Most people choose to prefer intake to rad in order to get the freshest (coolest) air. Personally, I have my rad up top, and since heat travels up, I'm really wanting to reverse my fans so they exhaust from inside the case. I figure since the nb is really the only thing that's producing a lot of heat internally, and both cpu and gpu are watercooled, it shouldn't be too much worse, and it'd help out overall internal airflow more.
 
I've been trying to research on watercooling for awhile, but I've never done it. I am just thinking about trying to watercool a TJ08 build I was researching. The TJ08 seems big enough for a mATX tower to pull it off, especially a reservoir-less setup.

The TJ08 only has a front and rear 120mm fans. I just don't know if a single 120mm rad would cool a C2D and GPU

Then I was thinking maybe have a loop to goes something like this:
Fillport->Pump->Front rad->(chipset)->cpu->rear rad->gpu
 
Hmm, I'm still trying to figure something out but currently, I'm seeing some god ugly results.

I used to be push/pull with overall intake with a 2x120. I was able to run around 1.5v vcore under load for 3.6ghz and stay under 70'c. with 1.45v under load, I'd stay under 60-65.

However, now that I've switched it to pulling exhaust, I'm seeing 3.6ghz 1.5v go up to 70'c immediately. what the.

The thing though is that it spikes right up to 70 before the water's had a chance to heat up. It leads me to suspect the block mount, but when I run 3.2ghz with 1.32v, I get 26'c idle and 42'c load, which are pretty good numbers. ihs is flat. The only thing different than before is I ran out of ASC and am using nanotherm mx1 or whatever now.

If I do let it run for a while, eventually it'll go up to around 72-73'c and I'll be getting some intensely hot air coming out of the rad. It's moving quite a fair amount of air too. And if I put my hand under the rad, the air it's pulling up is cool. Can't be more than a few degrees hotter than ambient at the very most. If I touch the metal of the rad, it's extremely warm. Good god.


edit: hmm looks like my room is 10'f hotter today than it was before. looks like 10'f translates into around 13'c for computer temps. seeing temp jumps across the board. where i was idling at 28'c yesterday, i'm seeing 41'c today.
