ok so here i am, trying to install the smp clients
well i´ve downloaded the Windows 2000/XP/Vista SMP client console version
(Folding@Home Windows SMP Client.exe)
i installed it and well i was expecting something similar to the single client console. then i use the install.bat, and it seems to require some sort of login and password, which i have no idea. Well what do i do here? :confused:

Edit: ok i put my user logon and password:

When you get to:

Just hit enter, it auto puts the current user in there. When you wrote it out, you forgot the "HOMEPC\" part.

another question
is it a good idea to say yes to “Allow receipt of work assignments greater than 5MB" ??
and also "Install as a service." ?


my pc is not a dedicated folding pc btw
 
Yes to work assignments and No to service.. If you have a quad you can just set affinity in taskmgr to Core 3 and 4
 
I'd run it as a service, it's less work to worry about having the console up all the time and as long as you have FahMon running, you can keep an eye on your clients that way.
 
so i configured FAH (fah.exe -configonly) and no problem, i also got the 2

i haven´t installed the service, so i haven´t reboot yet,
 
Thats an error on the Stanford Server's part (note the line [21:55:06] - Successful: assigned to (0.0.0.0).). We've all been seeing that a lot lately. Let it run and give it time, and it should eventually pick up a WU.


 
Son of a B. I had to cmd clients running and saw that on one of em... Figured i borked the setup and canceled it.

Well, looks like the lappy will start running 2 clients: WOOT WOOT!
 
Those of you who are setting up new clients might want to be sure and create a shortcut to the executable, and insert the "-advmethods -forceasm -verbosity 9" options to the end of the startup line. This helps to decrease your processing times and make your machine more productive. ;)

To do this when your running as a service, open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01+fah.

It's the ImagePath String, just append the flags you want to use to it's value.

Just added that to one of my Windoze boxen and will add it to the other tomorrow...thanks for the tip!

Depending on your boxen & client you may want to leave the "-advmethods" flag off.

The "-advmethods" flag will tend to help you get work-unit than have just finished beta testing.
At the moment, with the Linux SMP client, these tend to be the crewy ones.
I think its the same with the Windoze one as well.

I'm now running the Linux client without that flag inside my VM's and are getting a straight diet of p2605's on all 24.
I'm running 141 Ghz at 330 PpDpGhz ......... :cool:

Yeah, the 1st unit I picked up after adding advmethods -forceasm -verbosity 9 was a chewy unit :(
 
Sweet. This is just what I needed. I will also be installing my first SMP client on my Dual core Opteron here tomorrow. Figured I better get with the program before the Chimp Challenge starts.:D
 
okey so i´ve started the 2 smp clients, but it seems that there is a problem

Affinity Changer was running before i started the clients. then i proceeded to start "FaH SMP 2" and then "FaH SMP 1", but as u can see in the above picture, "FaH SMP 1" apparently isn´t working properly, no progress whatsoever. although the 4 cores are working at 100%

btw the clients are running with "-advmethods -forceasm -verbosity 9"

should i close the "FaH SMP 1" and start again? :confused:
 
I'd bump your checkpoints up as well, I leave mine at 15 minutes. Can we see what your processes look like, how many FahCore_A1 do you have running, 4 or 8? Whats the CPU load on each of them?

well i´ve read that if i close one smp client the other one would crash, so should i close both of them and start over? :confused:
 
Try killing the first one, it my bork the other one, if it does kill it and start over. Do you have the client installed twice or are you running them both out of the same install?

i´ve tried installing the SMP client twice, but i get a message of uninstallation instead, so i just copied the all the files to another directory. So i got one "FAH SMP 1" directory and "FAH SMP 2" directory, then i configured them (fah -configonly) and set them properly, the SMP 1 has machine ID 1 and the SMP 2 has ID 2.
 
I would suggest if you're going to run two Windows SMP clients, you take a look at Killer[MoB]'s guide. There are some very helpful hints there for running two SMP Clients.

i tried again, and is the same thing, whichever SMP client that i start first gets to advance in progress, the other one just stalls.

dunno what to do here :confused:
 
those numbers for 100% cpu usage are not adding up. Something else in the background running?

the wierd thing is nothing else, that would use more than 1% cpu, is running in the background :(
 
click that check box for processes from all users. See if something else from someone else is running.
 
when i took the screenshot the second FahCore_a1.exe was in 0%, but that was for that instant apparently, gonna try again. right now, i have shutdown the smp clients
 
You're doing just fine for now it looks like. The reason I say this is because all of the instances are using processing time. If they weren't using processing time then I would be worried. It would also be a good idea to install FahMon or FahSpy and see what they say.

 
finally back to folding, everything is running smoothly, both SMP clients are progressing. :)
 
Good news! :) Just keep in mind that shutting one of them down without the other will most likely corrupt the second WU. Should you ever need to reboot, be sure and shut them both down quickly using Control-C, and then check you task manager to make sure that they both closed. It seems like a 50/50 possibility that you'll lose something when you close them out. :(

 
What that screen shot shows me is that you didn't wait the 10-15 minutes to have affinity changer assign each core two threads. You can tell one process has a full core which affinity changer should correct given enough time.

yes, i opened one SMP client and leave it running for some time and then i started the other one, and it was good :)
 
no!! my sister shutdown my pc! and all my folding data was lost!!! i didn't make a backup!! one day of work totally lost!!! :mad: :(

i'm gonna have to start over :(
