installing q6600

I am installing with the stock heat sink and i cant seem to get it to fit properly on all sides... i have been going at it for about 45 minutes and now need to reapply thermal paste and start over. any tips on installing this heatsink and how to know when it is properly installed? i looked in the manuel and on intel website but it just doesn't seem to work as easily as it does when they do it... please help

I can't really explain how to do it, but I think you'd be better off getting an aftermarket HSF.

unfortunately i need the system working tonight, so an aftermarket one is unavaible to use at the current moment

Do the opposite corners first, and mount the cooler with the board outside the case. Push in one of the corners and make sure the pin is all the way through. Then do the one on the opposite corner, and use as much force as necessary while keeping the board flat (as long as it's flat, you won't risk damaging anything). Once those two pins are in fully, do the other two. It shouldn't be that difficult.

If the motherboard is in the case, remove it and install the HSF before reinstalling the motherboard. This way you can use the fingers in one hand to press the back of the motherboard up while you push down on the HSF push pin on the other side. This drove me crazy with an earlier build as the motherboard would flex too much to allow installation of the HSF.

i cleaned the heatsink with alchol and this is how it came out, is this ready to use for another try at assembling the pc?

Just double-check everything and make sure all the pins are secured, and give them each an extra push. Then you can install the board in the case and give the full machine a shot.

installed windows... on the second time it goes to restart i get the flash of a blue screen with writing (too quick to read) and then it restarts and says windows could not load sussecfully.. gives me a list of start up options. I chose safe mode and it says windows cannot finish installation in safe mode and restarts. i tried the reapair pc opion on the disc and no luck, i then reinstalled the os and same problem... the computer did load up in my old settings and such perform i formated the drive with the windows disc and began to reinstall

Did you load the SATA drivers for your motherboard? If you're installing XP, you need to either have a floppy drive connected and press F6 during the installation to load your mobo's SATA drivers off of a floppy, or you need to slipstream the drivers onto an installation disk and use that to install the OS.

Not necessary unless you are running the SATA controller in AHCI mode. Using the native IDE mode selected in the BIOS there is no need to install other drivers via floppy. Also, if this was the problem, he would not have gotten to start the installation.

His best bet is to try different cables for the drives as well as running memtest. It seems most of the problems regarding crashes during the Windows installation is related to problems with the RAM.

got it all fixed, i ran a mem test off the instal disk and that magically fixed it even though there were no error
