Installing DirectX9 on Windows 7

While installing Call of Duty 4 on my computer, it asked me if I wanted to install DirectX9. Without really thinking at all, I just installed it.

Now I'm wondering what exactly did I just do. Did it actually install DirectX9 even though I have 10? Did I potentially screw up my computer a bit? All my games seem to be running just fine, but I'm still a little concerned about the long term effects.

So download the installer for DX9 and install it, no issues. Some games will complain because of the lack of DX9 files they require which are not included with Windows 7 by default. It's a non-issue, there's no chance of damage or corruption as DX9 and DX10 files aren't even named the same, they can't overwrite each other so, again, it's a non-issue.

Install the DX9 redistributable and play your games.

Simple.

Well the installer already installed DX9, is there a point to downloading the redistributable?

I'm not concerned about whether DX9 installed correctly or not. All I'm worried about is whether it might have "messed up" DX10.

It wouldn't hurt to grab the latest DX9 redistributable and run it just to make sure you do have the very latest DX9 components available, but, if the game installed DX9 and it works, then you're all set.

DX9 and DX10 are two entirely separate components, they don't walk on each other, you could say. Games will call up the libraries they require - there's no chance that DX9 will interfere with DX10 components, and vice versa.

The redistributable will install the latest DX9 files so it is recommended. And no installing DX9 does not harm DX10/11.

I'll give you a quick analogy of how it will work. That said, this is not how it is actually done, just an analogy.

DirectX 10 comes with Win7 by default and is installed in the DirectX 10 directory.
You install DirectX 9 because a game needs it and it's installed into the DirectX 9 directory.

Games that rely on DirectX 10 will go to the DirectX 10 directory for what they need and games that rely on DirectX 9 will go to the DirectX 9 directory for what they need.

Just download Direct X web updater. It will just update the files that are old. Won't "mess up" anything.

da233, this advice is absolutely the best in this thread. The web installer will scan for and install all components you need or are missing. Installing just the DX9 distro or just the DX10 distro has been linked to screwing up your Direct X. TechARP even has a editorial on it. The web installer will make sure all 9 and 10 updates are installed.
