i've never moded a laptop...do i need a specific laptop HD?

as of now i have a

5400rmp

No you don't need a specific hard drive model. Any 2.5" SATA hard drive will do.

If you want speed, go with a 7200RPM drive.
If you want more storage, usually 5400PRM drives have the best GB per $ ratio.
