Individual core temps vs Bios temp

Using the rig in my sig, I was wondering if someone could tell me what the avg temp difference is between Bios temp and windows programs that monitors core temps?

My bios reads 26c as the only temp for CPU but in windows, I am using Everest and it shows individual core temps only and they are ~10c higher. Is this normal?

Yes, it is normal. The mb temp in the bios is reading a thermistor in the bottom of the cpu socket. Everest is reading the internal DTS (digital temp sensor) embedded inside the cpu and thus is much more accurate and will read much higher and react quicker because it is inside the cpu chip itself. This more accurate reading it typically referred to as the "core temp". The difference will change a lot depending on load. For testing and OCing you want to go with Everest, CoreTemp, Speedfan, they all read the DTS and will agree within a deg C. The bios reading is 87% BS , but see below.

Under load you are good to 70C+ core temp at around 85C the cpu will send out a "I am too hot spin the fans on full speed" #PROCHOT signal, a few deg C over that and it will shut down to protect itself.

What is interesting is that unless everest (I dont use it daily) will remain resident in memory and monitor the temps with an alarm, the cpu temp alarm in the bios is probally goverened by the inaccurate thermal sensor. So if you decide to use the CPU temp alarm in the bios setting the bios cpu temp alarm for 60-65C is probally about right since it read low and responds slowly. One reason using that bios alarm setting is probally a good idea is that it does not use memory you might want available for a game. Speedfan works well, will remain in the tray and will show cpu core temp, not sure about an audible alarm. What you want to do is run TAT at your day to day OC and make sure your machines cooling can handle it, if necessary back off the OC some. Then you know that unless you have a cooling failure, your cpu will not overheat while gaming. You would also need to consider the heat generated by your video card too.

Lots of good info here.

Thanks for the great information.

Well, my Core temps hover around 33c-37c at idle in an ambient room temp of ~72F. Under full load I see they get as high as 47c.

I am using a Thermalright Ultra90 HS with a Panaflo H/O fan. I was using the Intel Stock HSF and getting idle temps of ~43-47c and load temps of about 63c. So i guess it was a good thing I switched, huh?

Are those temps with the stock HSF overclocked? or stock clocks? cus im running the same temps, with a stock HSF and no OC. However, im running a q6600 on a 680i mobo.

Bill I thought that speedfan was 15C too low--I don't use it but...maybe that's just with certain mobos? Regardless, I always suggest people use EVEREST or coretemp, make it simple and those temps are correct. I like to look at uguru temps just because they are so low! ;)
