hi guys. a magazine in india recently built indias fastest homecomputer with 2 ati ares grphix cards, 12 gb of 2000hz corsair ram, asus mother board and all. they were so confident of their creation that they challenged anyone to beat their scores. i want to try my hand at the competition. i have 10,000 usd on my hand or rs.5,00,000. those guys managed to overclock an i7-980x to 4.5 ghz. i read somewhere that parts with a certain serial number give higher overclocks. so please help me build and overclock this pc. thank you

So you want to overclock a 980X past 4.5GHz? Or just beat some magazine scores for no reason?

You might want to wait a few days and pickup a Sandy Bridge CPU and motherboard, check the Overclocking and Intel CPU forums for more information.

OR, have an eVGA SR-2 and dual Hex Core GPU with 4 GTX580 in SLI with an Antec 1200W PSU.

That will ROFLPWN your countryman's poorly priced attempt at a "fast PC" (since the ARES is severely overpriced for what it is). Or if the other guy built an Eyefinity Rig, get 4x HD6970 2GB cards...

Second the SR-2 idea, especially if you have that money for this build. You can do it on air too whereas you'd have to go water to beat that magazine with a 980X.

Do you get anything out of this besides e-peen? Seems like a waste of money otherwise.

gee thanks for the help guys. i'm doin this not only cause im wantin to beat the magazine but also because my pal wanted a pc like this. he's the one whos paying for all this . btw guys i hate to admit it but i don;t know much about pc tech. can u please explain what u meant by dual hex core gpu ???

So you openly admit you have no idea what you are talking about but you are happy to help blow your friend's money to beat a score that you don't understand?

Just want to make sure I'm keeping track.

The dual CPU board is one good idea. A better idea is to wait and get a SB setup that will smoke theirs for much less money.

There is a Nigerian prince who needs your help beating their score too...

I lol'd.

I mean, I'm sure this is sombodies wierd idea of trollin', but fantasy builds are always fun.

@taolin102:

If you don't know much about PC tech how do you plan on putting this all together? Are you confident that you could build such a thing? I would bet a good chunk of money that once its all put together it wouldn't boot.

The setup that your magazine has come up with is not going to be nice: its going to be hot, its going to be loud, its not going to give a very good experience, and its going to be riddled with driver problems. "I want the fastest PC in the world" often leads people to do stupid things in their builds.

But yes, what your magazine did is buy all the most expensive parts and put them in a box, and labeled it "fastest PC in India".

Your magazine wanted a sound-bite, and they got it.

With the understanding that this is pretty stupid stuff, what can we do?
Well you have two key facts you can leverage against this magazine:
A) they used a single old CPU
B) they used the more reasonable (???) of a quad-GPU setup.

Using a dual socket Sandy-Bridged based setup would be able to top a 980X, and using a quad Nvidia GTX 580 would be able to top a dual 6970 setup. The problem is going to be finding a board that will do this for you: currently none exist. You can however go with two of the same CPU (in a slightly different package), on, as mentioned above, a $600 EVGA motherboard.

So, without further adue:
2x Intel x5680.
EVGA Classified SR-2 (price listed in CAD, but I'm sure they'd ship it to the states, donno about India --also remove the spaces in the URL)
2x Corsair 6GB triple-channel kit notes: in the same vein 8GB was slower than 4GB and 12GB is slower than 6GB, I'd go for 12GB instead of 24GB. Also: I'm just guessing that the dominators use the best chips, if you go onto the memory forum you'll typically find one particular chip from Hynix or Micron that's the favorite.
4x MSI GTX 580 822MHz core
Silverstone ST1500W PSU notes: make sure this is on its own line, and it would be best if it was a 240VAC line.
Lian-Li P80
1x WD Black 2TB
Samsung 12x BD-ROM

---------
$9550 b4 shipping/tax

that said, if I had an infinite budget to spend on such a product, that's not what I'd do: even with $10,000 that's not what I'd do: I'd build three computers: a farm, a server, a new desk and a rackmount to hold all of it, and (the guts, replacing sig) of a new gaming PC, along with some epic networking hardware.

++++

my friends what i ment by me not having much knowledge is that i may not know as much as u experts, but then again im not dumb either i have assembled over 30 pc's from basic to gaming and i think that i know most of the basics and i have some what better knowledge of things when compared to the salesmen here in india. u just cant beleive the stupidity of these people
for eg: the guy who supplies parts and pc's to the southern govt. didn't know he had to put a webcam app to acess the webcam in the laptop and was instead just reinstalling the webcam driver!!!!!!!!!!
and as u can see its next to impossible to get decent help around here for a loptop let again the fastest pc. thats why i turned to u experienced folks. don't worry i can manage im 99% sure of it.

say my own doubt now is that what os is the best suited for running a dual cpu config ??

He doesn't want you to waste money on a ridiculous PC, but I'll indulge the thread with some info:

- The people who score the highest benchmark numbers (3d Mark 2011, Unigine Heaven, etc) are hardcore overclockers who run sub-ambient cooling and cherry-pick high-clocking CPU's and GPU's. This PC you discuss doesn't seem impressive at all. There must be faster PCs in India - it's just some stupid magazine. People on this forum have achieved 4.5Ghz and above on air-cooling... You'd need 4.85-5.0Ghz to match the best 24/7 setups, and 6Ghz+ for anything approaching a world record attempt (on a 980X).

- Asus Ares is a dual-GPU HD5870 card. So this is last generation hardware. A 3-way Crossfire HD6970 setup will thrash a dual Ares setup. A 3-way SLI GTX 580 setup will as well. The GTX 580 is faster than the 6970, but it has 1.5GB of RAM vs 2GB, which may be limiting in certain ultra-high resolution, high anti-aliasing scenarios (remains to be seen).

- Sandy-Bridge i7 2600K is the best Quad-Core CPU for gaming. This will run on the LGA 1155 socket, and it compares favorably against the 980X. It will overclock higher to slightly offset the 2-core deficit, and it's significantly less expensive and more power efficient.

- The Xeon Hexa-Core (6-cores) CPU's are the server-analog of the HexaCore 970/980/990X CPU's. They can be run in DUAL-CPU configuration, and thus people have recommended the EVGA SR-2 dual LGA-1366 motherboard. Dual-CPU configs do not overclock as well, in general. This would be foolish for the purposes of gaming. Just... foolish.

- Dual Hexa-Core is the fastest solution, but also ridiculously expensive, and you've easily passed the point of diminishing returns.

My recommendation for a VERY fast gaming rig:

- i7 2600K + good heatsink (Silver Arrow perhaps), overclocked to nearly 5Ghz. High overclocking steppings are unkown thus far.
- Possibly the Asus p67 chipset motherboard (new hardware, but if Gigabyte has a board out, it's likely to be good as well).
- 8GB (4 x 2GB) of High-clock binned "elpida Hyper MGH-E" RAM, Super Talent brand is generally cheapest.
- Dual GTX 580's (these overclock well on stock cooling) or Dual HD 6970 GPU's [ I forgot, how well does p67 chipset handle multi-GPU setups?] - Hmm... ok, p67 will divide PCI-Express into 8x/8x, which is likely fine for up to 2 GPU's. You'd have to use X58 (or wait for "X68") for 3-way GPU and above. Still... DUAL-GPU's = fast as hell... and scaling beyond DUAL = not as good.
- Antec 1200 high-current PSU
- Corsair 700D or 800D case (because it's damned great).
- Lite-on or similar Blu-ray reader or burner of choice with 8mb of cache (I'm told that this makes some difference for some reason vs the 2mb drives)
- Samsung or Western Digital hard drives, SSD's for OS/games/programs (Crucial C300, or Sandforce based SSD's, or Intel X25-M-G2) - BUT nextgen SSDs are coming out very soon (maybe crucial c400, Intel G3, "sandforce 2," etc).
- 3 x LCD's of choice. Maybe the 27" Dell IPS displays, or 30" IPS... not sure. Get a good wall-mount system for these, and a nice U-shaped desk perhaps.
- Sound Card of choice.

- Upgrade motherboard and/or CPU when new options are available and/or wait for LGA 2011 setups (true high-end successor to LGA 1366, X58 chipset).

This system may still murder anything based on 5870 GPU's, considering their poor crossfire scaling.

I hope this wasn't a troll thread...

If you read this guy's other thread below this one, methinks he is a smelly troll of the bored attention seeking variety :).

Agreed. Dropping 10k to beat some canned benchies in a epeen challenge is dumb... dual ares cards? Epeen points and that's it. 980x? More epeend points unless you are actually using the 6 cores.

Sounds more like indias most expensive under performing pc.

no way,,i aint no troll guys. i already have more than enough attention at home and school im hoping to get outa it ok and i in no way want anymore attention.
:eek::mad:
now that the matter is clear
iam serious about what i said and im considering the config put forward by archmage. like i have said before this is not about some f@#$in epeen or sometin ok. my firend is the person whose paying for this and i've already told its a wate blah blh blah ok but he wont listen so i guess its better i do it for him ok. thanks you arrchmage i seriously appreciate u giving me some valuable information;)
