In need of a virus simulator

I will be testing a range of the current popular (and not so popular) anti-virus programs for a personal assignment. Could anyone recommend a safe and sterile virus simulator that will easily be detected and dealt with by most scanners? I’ve googled it and am not satisfied.

I know this is a sketchy request, but it is in the interest of security and I just need an effective method of benchmarking anti-virus programs.

But then if the anti-virus program misses it, is it because the program recognized it wasn't a true virus, and not that it didn't do a good job.

Just use real viruses.

Just use limewire or Kazaa for a week, they're the gateways to computer hell.

Happy viruses

I'd be interested in this sort of thing too.. I was wanting to do a similar experiment.

You can download canned virus test files that are pretty much worthless or you can do it the hard way and just get you some viruses. Seriously, load winxp on a computer, don't update and go browse some porn or looks for game cracks and torrents. Make an image of the hard drive and just re-image when you test. That is the most realistic strategy I have seen for testing anti-virus software.

Some companies seem to have an archive just loaded with viruses that they use to test but I don't know where you might get that.

go to astalavista.box.sk and download some cracks, you are guaranteed to get all sorts of nasty shit.

I think the best way here would be to setup another box with your antivirus, disconnect all other computers from the internet, and then hit some nasty sites with just that computer on the network/internet. Repeat with easy software you want to test.

Thanks for the replies people. But opening up my comp to real viruses isn't very practical and consistant. That last suggestion from jonw757 is something like what I'm looking for, thanks.
