I have all my family photos from the last 6 years or so stored on dvd. I'm looking for the best way to safeguard them for the long term. My first thought was a fireproof safe. The best one I could find, where cost is not ridiculous says it can withstand 1700 degrees F for one hour. What is the melting point of a dvd, or at what temp will the dvd deform enough to render the data worthless. Would the dvd survive a house fire in such a safe?
My next thought was a bank box. Shouldn't have to worry about a fire there. So how long will the dvd retain the data? Would a thumb drive retain the data longer with better integrity than a dvd?

Happy Holidays!

Not sure on the melting point of a DVD... but I would imagine it wouldn't take much. I don't know how well those fire safes insulate.

As far as a bank box, as long as its kept safe and clean, I don't think the DVD is really just going to stop working. Should be safe there for a while.

Banks are invulnerable to fires?

:p

Bank box sounds like your best bet. I would make several copies of the DVD. Put a time capsule in your yard!

Time capsules are so much fun!

do several solid state and dvd copies, if it's really important, and keep one in the bank, and one in a home safe or something.
if you have guns, get a fireproof gunsafe, and kill two birds with one stone.

As i just bought a fire safe for my rifles i know the answer here. that rating is for how hot and how long they can stand until the temp reaches 350 degrees in side. That DVD is history long before that so dont bet on plastic making it inside a fire safe. As far as how long a DVD will retain data in a enviormently controlled room with no one touching it to scratch the serface? You would be friggin turn into dust before that thing simply lost your data unlike a flash drive which actually degrades over time (with use of course).
