Impressed by Dead Space

Started playing this today, I just finished Chapter 2, and I'm very impressed so far.

Runs great (1900x1200 with everything maxed, very nice on my new 24" monitor) and looks very stunning. There's nothing that really jumps out at you as looking amazing at first, but that's because everything looks good. So many games these days seem to throw all their budget and horsepower into certain effects, and then the rest of the game's look suffers. To me the graphics remind me of an upgraded Doom 3, but minus the "plastic" look and with far better effects, nicer textures, and shadows that aren't pitch black.

Amazing atmosphere, engaging RE4 style gameplay (but with some horror in it's survival horror unlike RE4), and impeccable sound design. A couple years ago I never would have imagined a game like this coming out of EA, but I hope they keep up the good work and I hope this sells enough to warrant a sequel.

Just watched Dead Space Downfall which for those of you who don't know, an anime movie released along side the game as a prequel to Dead space the game, it shows the events leading up to the start of the first game.

I ordered this from Direct2Drive last night after I got home and was planning on DLing it as I played through Mass Effect again. The only thing is, when I went to the DL screen the only button was one that said pre-order. Has this not come out for DigiDis yet or is D2D just that far back on their releases?

I have to say that this game looks great. One of the best looking games ive seen this year. The sound is top notch and i love the floating HUD for everything.

This game is NOT scary. Playing it in the dark with headphones and it does nothing. Uses cheap scares like doom 3 and somewhat fake scary atmosphere using darkness. I find the scarier parts are the parts with flickering lights.

This game is NOT a survival horror. If im on hard and bleeding health packs, ammo, and have a pistol that works for mostly every enemy, its not survival horror. I like how i beat the first boss (big guy not invincible guy) without getting hit. Penumbra is a better example of survival horror. This game is just RE4 in space. The game is really fun, but not a survival horror at all.

That ripper gun is pretty useless unless its for those tank guys. Apparently the ripper stuns those guys until they die. Best weapon is the line gun, 2nd place is the plasma cutter.

Almost done with chapter 7.. its fun, but no survival horror.

I'm on my second play through on impossible. I have a maxed contact beam and maxed force gun, neither are to great in impossible, which makes me sad. Maxed ripper demolishes things in impossible, as does the line gun. I will probably go with the pulse rifle though instead, to go with my shiny storm trooper armor.

This game is scary. Have it full blast connected to my receiver and HDTV and play with the lights off.
Using Sennheiser 580s works awesome as well. Gotta love the ambiance sounds of whispering voices.
I love the survival feel and the physical limitations of Isaac the main character. Awesome best Survival horror game in a long time.

Btw check out the movie if you haven't yet. It ties in really well to the game by showing you all the events that take place before the game on the Ishimura. Also noticed a live action coming out on IMDB
If its Uwe boll though..lol please no.

This games sound is ridiculous! I just jumped outta my seat, which I never do. FEAR came close, but I think this one takes it. Different games but this game might end up being on my top 5 list....it's that good.

I think the game easily deserves to win awards on sound design, for starters.

IMO the pulse rifle is the best weapon for nearly everything (especially more useful for harder difficulties since plasma cutter and line cutter will take multiple shots to sever a limb)

Highest damage per second and potential damage per ammo pack. Also, the fully upgrade clip size is insane. I've never had to reload during a fight. The gun also has stopping force which coupled with rapid fire can keep hordes of baddies at bay. The only con is that the gun eats through ammo pretty fast. Luckily the ammo is pretty cheap.

pulse rifle (main weapon and fully upgraded)
plasma cutter (secondary backup and fully upgraded)
line cutter (umm to generate line cutter ammo that sells for $1000 per instance...)
contact beam (also for generating money, but I did use this gun for 3 parts in the game)

Fear made my skin crawl even when two people were in the same room as me watching a movie on my PS3. I had my headphones on and the sound effect of that game combined with that scary little girl....... The game is creppy more than anything (Im buying fear 2 for sure).

Really great game, finished it last night.

Kind of disappointed by the final fight though. While it looked really impressive, it was insanely easy :(. That boss in the middle was a lot harder.

I think the camera is positioned perfectly. It gives you a claustrophobic feel.

QFT. The developers mentioned that was their intent. The camera position was specifically intended to make the player feel very enclosed. I think they did a nice job of it, but it is a little harder to see, but I suppose that's the point.

I'm going to have to play it with the 360 controller though. Guess I'll get one of those wireless things so I can hookup my 360 controller to it. It frickin' blows with a mouse. Definitely an unfinished port.

Un-finished like every console to PC port. So many are un-finished these days because the PC is afterthought DRM-ed money-grab. I can't even tolerate UT3 (PC) for more than 30 minutes at a time because I can't find a server with any players.

Back to the topic: I agree I actually like the camera angle, its refreshing.

Surprised noone has mentioned that you can´t use gamepads on the PC version without some serious tweaks... I run the wireless 360 gamepad and though I can move around with it and some actions works well others don´t. there is no way of remapping the controls in game either and there is no template if you want to run the same scheme as 360 owners...

As for now it just doesn´t work I constantly run around in aim mode can´t use the "compass" and can´t see my objectives and other things... However apart from that I don´t seem to be able to save my games? I was surprised to start now and see I have no saved games despite all the time played yesterday? Also wonder what difficulty level is recommended? Can you change while in game.

I have found the difficulty level to auto balance for me.

Also I find it actually much more polished than most PC ports. Mouse and keyboard works very well (aside from using the mouse in the menus) I will admit using the inventory is a little awkward, but the rest works well, map is easy to navigate and the default keys are intuitive.

And I will agree, the camera makes alot of difference in how you feel.

I love the lack of a HUD and the use of holograms, rather cool. Finally the sound direction is absolutely unbelievable.

I am having alot of fun slowly playing thru this game :)

Just started Chapter 12 and have had a blast so far..Nicely paced and atmospheric. One of the best games Ive played this year!

I played the whole game on a wired 360 pad and everything worked perfectly. Just plugged it in and everything was mapped exactly as it is on the 360.

I hate the I can't map arrow keys for movement but other than that, this game ROCKS!

5.1 sound is absolutely amazing.....scares that crap out of me.
The graphics are very impressive.....and it runs so smooth maxxed out.
The camera angle seems annoying at first....but definitely adds to the scary feel.

I really don't feel it is a bad port, other than the key mapping issue. I'm very impressed!

Sounds pretty intresting, I might have to check it out.
Although with current system I am not sure I will be able to run it that great o_O

I dont understand all these comments about how good the graphics are. IMO they are NOT that great. the lack of AA was horrible looking and the in game AA just seem to make things blurry while leaving all the jaggies. the lighting and shadows are okay at best and the game has plenty of low res textures. STALKER had great indoor graphics and lighting and felt more realistic and much more creepy.

still Dead Space is one of the best games I have ever played. If it was first person and had a little better graphics it would be a 10 in my book. the over the shoulder third person view was a little nauseating for me in some of the confined areas of the game.

Just finished it and this game never lets up..Highly recommended..Not sure about a second playthrough as it seems its only about maxing weapons..The PC suit is pretty cool though..

PC suit? Is there a downloadable suit like the 360 and PS3?

Both those guns maxed are great. The contact gun kills anything in 1 or 2 shots and the force gun the best crowd control weapon. I used those two a lot on impossible. The ripper I found to be more like a novelty gun. Line gun lacks stopping power, so I didn't use it much.

could you give me all the buttons or something then. How to get out of aim mode and all I have tried mashing pretty much every button available trying combos and everything.. in the beginning you get tutorials but some buttons are obviously not mapped.

There should be but I dont think so.The Level 6 PC suit is different from the others Ive seen..Although I think the PS3 Obsidian suit is the coolest..

For me you just hit L Trigger to go into aim mode, and let go of L Trigger to go out. You mentioned the compass in your other post, to use that you just click in the right stick. Are you using the Microsoft 360 pad drivers or the XBCD drivers? I use the Microsoft drivers and pretty much everything game I play recognizes the controller automatically and sets it up perfectly.
