I have a 160GB Maxtor IDE drive that I was temporarily using as a main disk and today while online my computer suddenly shut down (I've been using this drive for about 2 weeks, owned it for nearly 4 years now).
Naturally I tried to restart my computer and at the post screen, right around when all storage devices are listed, the drive is listed and...shutdown. I disconnect everything, restart and...shutdown. I disconnect the drive the system presumably gets past post (the monitor wasn't connected at this point) and the familiar beeps signifying no operating system are heard.
My question is this: What can I do to temporarily get the drive recognized to copy some data over? (my GF saved some critical files on the disk and she needs them quickly). I don't really care about anything else on there or even the disk itself, but I just need it working stably for a few hours.
EDIT:
Now the system is doing it without the drive installed...interesting. I've basically had the same configuration for 2 years (without the 160GB drive of course). It's the main rig in my signature.
