Image Backup in Different Partition

I'm looking for a backup solution whereby,

* I can make a image of a partition (most likely to contain my operating system).
* backup that image into another partition (data storage partition) on the same drive.
* restore that image if I can't boot up from my original windows partition.

Is there such a solution out there?

I use Acronis True Image.
 
It's called ntbackup.

You'd have to reinstall Windows before applying the backup. Works best for file restoration and not OS backup. Keep all of your files off of the system partition.

Either that or pick up a copy of ghost.
 
I use Norton Ghost for this very purpose.
It lets me play with drivers, system files etc then I can restore the image from my other partition in about one and a half minutes.
 
For Norton, how do you restore the image from another partition if you can't even boot the system up?

There are a couple of methods, you can burn the image onto a DVD/CD, which is then bootable. You insert the disc at boot and it'll restore the image.

Or, you create a boot floppy. When the system won't boot, use the floppy then restore the image from your partition.
 
Even the Ghost disc itself will let you boot thru it and locate an image for restore if all driers are loaded properly. When I've restored images off my external USB drive I just booted with the Ghost disc and had no issues at all.
 
The problem with this method of "backup" is that when your drive fails, there goes your image. Backing up to a partition as opposed to a seperate physical disk provides a false sense of security. Just something to think about...
 
Yeah, that's true, it's really kind of pointless unless you have a good deal of space... Then at 'least you can use the images to go back to a previous state if something happens your OS due to any malware or bugs or w/e, but if you're tight for space it won't even be good for that.

You can use image programs to back up to optical media but you'll have to sit there feeding it DVDs 'till it's done depending how much of your install you wanna keep intact, best bet is just to buy a cheap drive + external enclosure (will be cheaper than a retail external drive, and you'll prolly have a longer warranty too).
