I was recommended to come to this site for some serious help. I am looking to build my own computer because I am tired of buying computers that just don't do it for me. I am also very interested in learning more about computers and building one will definitely be a fun project.

At this point I know nothing and need some help. Where do I start?

You should start by looking around the different sections of the forum to learn about the different components inside a computer. Then start in General Hardware and ask for part recommendations for your computer. Make sure to do some research on your own and try to come up with a preliminary build, and make sure to clearly list your budget and what you plan on using the computer for. Depending on the purpose, the best selection of parts for a computer can vary tremendously. If you have any questions about a specific component, just post a thread asking about it and there will be a lot of people there to help you out. Good luck :).
 
Zero is dead one, just start at the top and slowly work your way down the forum. Also, head over the [H]ard|OCP and check out the reviews, fantastic information there. I would suggest using the search function is a great tool to find information, but currently it is disabled though once it is back it can greatly help find things. Hope you get plenty of help.

Read through the entire thread. Yes it is a lot of information but it's all very helpful information.

As has been mentioned, the first step is to decide what your primary use of the computer will be.

Builds for gaming will be completely different than builds for media storage or a mass ripping of all your movies and music. Decide how much storage you will need and make sure that you make everything upgradable if you need to. Then, read, read, read, read and read some more. When you decide on something, find out as much negative info about the product as you can and decide if it's still for you.

In the end you'll have a good time but don't rush into anything.

There's a bajillion threads about "Double check this build", or X amount of dollar build..

Read those, look at the parts they use. Read the user critique and before you know it, you'll be hooked.

Because of this forum I went from dreams of having a good system, to getting a 6800nu 2 weeks after launch (Coming of a geforce TWO! )
