hey, carnival forces here, doubt anyone missed me (i wasn't a huge producer before) but i'm back, so i thought i'd drop in and say hey, ask a couple questions...

first, wow, we have linkage on the front page of hardocp? wow.

second, superwow, hardfolding.com looks absolutely spectacular, really really great work king, that just looks awesome!


so, i have this shiny new macbook pro, what version / client should i d/l to maximize ppd and use both cores?

also, what is the current most efficient PPD per Watt CPU? it's time to start a farm. :D

If that macbook is a intel powered piece, you can use the mac smp client and it will use both cores and make some nice points.

It's hard to beat the Q6600 for points from a single box. I know it's not a low powered CPU, but by the time you build 2 of something else to match the output, you will have more money and probably more power usage from the 2 vs the 1 quad. At 3.2ghz running linux, you can see about 3000 ppd on the 2653 WU. At 3.5 ghz, it will make 3100 PPD running WinXP. Even at stock, it'll break 2k ppd running windows.

Get yourself some SMP clients. SMP FTW! SMP puts out lots of points. Lots of points, few WU's, but lots of science.



 
okay, so i got the console client, i think i got it to run (./fah6 -smp) couple questions:
1. do i manually have to start it up when my computer turns on?
2. do i manually have to turn it off when i'm not plugged in?
3. is it using both the cores?
4. if i just delete it and install the non-console client will it work as a service? (idk if mac os x has services or not, i have no idea how macs work...)

well, few more questions...
i came back to check my progress only to see that FAH was not, in fact, running. it downloaded a few cores and then decided it couldn't run because it couldn't exeucte ./mpiexec (even after i moved both into the same folder)

so i downloaded the "client installer" but the README said that beta client expired July 7, 2007 (or maybe july 27, either way, long before now)

i installed anyways and it seems to be working, though in top it displays four(!) FahCore_a1 entries running..what's up with that?

will this client auto-pause when i switch to battery power on my laptop? will it auto-run when i restart?

Hey WB man.

yeah the new smp clients actually run 4 cores that is why you are seeing 4 different FahCore_a1's its normal.

you can go into advance options while doing the -config on the client and tell it to pause while running on battery. and you will need to also need to set the function the same why for it to auto-run on start up. it is one of the first things it asks when you do the -config.

i tried running the -config (doing ./fah6 -smp -config) and it wouldn't execute (i guess because i installed the actual client thing that puts an icon in my system preferences?) and there's no option to have it turn off on battery power in the Utilities icon, help?

my "CPUA" temp is 76*c and my GPU Diode is 75*c...i know i've been out of the hardware game for a while, but those numbers are frightening to me...how can i either have FAH only use say 90% of idle cycles or how can i not be freaking out about that temperature...?

I've never even touched a Mac, much less a modern one so I'm not completely sure, but I believe all the flags are the same no matter the client. The flags between the Windows and Linux clients are the same.

You may want to try running with -configonly instead of -smp -configonly. Make sure to backup the folding directory before doing this as not using the -smp flag might hose your current work unit like it can do under Linux. I don't think it will if you are only using the -configonly flag.

When I changed from the previous beta Linux client to the current beta Linux client it would not execute -configonly if I also had the -smp flag. I tried it with -configonly by itself and it worked just fine. Once I was done with that, I started the client up to run with the -smp flag and had no trouble. It didn't hose the work unit and went back to crunching on the one I had going already. My folding directory was backed up before I tried this, though.

 
well it's folding now, so i'm not going to interrupt it, when i tried running it with -config it was like "you need to run SMP for this to work" so idk what to make of that..

how can i monitor folding progress on this macbook pro? i've seen EMIII doesn't exist anymore (that was a huge shocker, let me tell you :eek: ) and idk what a mac folding monitor is...

god damnit, i can't wait to land a (good paying) job so i can start my farm dog....shit. :eek:
