May want to look at the legality of getting things off grey-markets and the like. Not only to cover your butt but also, as a customer, if you sold me a computer and a month later Windows decides to batch-pull a bunch of grey market keys and suddenly my system was in-active, it wouldn't be cool

Spot on. I would never use a third party msdn key and try to sell it as a retail copy installed in a pre-built computer, or anything that needs to be legitimate. You'd have to be insane to try to do so.
 
Win 10 does not require activation to function or install. Some features are blocked is all.. Just have customers provide their own key or charge the retail price of Win 10 and buy a key from MS. A key can be added or changed basically at any time
 
If you are doing more than 1 or two a year (ala you're in the business) you should be set up as a channel partner with a reputable distributor. Buying stuff off Newegg and Amazon are fine, until you have to start providing warranty support for your system, and Asus/MSI/whoever has sent the motherboard back a third time with "no defects found" and your client is getting impatient as to why their $2k gaming computer hasn't been usable for three months. Going the channel partner route assures you of the best available service to provide your customers, as well as the assurance that the Windows license you include is 100% legitimate.

Yeah, it stinks because you're having to add $100-$150 just for the Windows license, when the big OEM's get them for practically free with their volume (hey, if you were moving millions of Windows computers per year, you'd get a pretty sweet discount too), but even if you were getting the same discounted price on Windows licenses as Dell, HP, etc., you still won't be able to compete on price. Upsell the value of your service and your quality - make people want to pay you more for building them a computer than what they would pay to Dell, Walmart, or Best Buy.

What kind of support will you provide?
What will your hours be?
What is your standard warranty period and will you provide a working replacement part while the person waits for a new one?
Will you only cover hardware or the base OS install?

This is why people go OEM, next day or 1-2 day support on anything.

I think you may have misunderstood the question. He wasn't asking about a business startup portfolio review, he was asking about Windows license key pricing deals
 
I am aware of his first part of the question, but I choose to expand on the rest as they had noted "if I want to build computers to resell?" as most PC building people / companies fail and go under because they did not think about the little things, like support of their customers and not realizing they can kiss their life good bye if it is just them doing this and business is good.
 
There are no cheap options I would trust to sell to a stranger. Using sub $20 licenses for friends and family computers is an idea but... one might give the end user an option "I can get a license from a shady acquaintance who is probably a Russian mobster for 1/5th cost, if you like."

I would echo the sentiment that selling prebuilt computers for profit is tough. I've probably sold 30-40 custom computers as sideline over the last two decades and the profit isn't there to support the problem builds, in my experience.
 
And whatever you do, never EVER sell a computer to a family member or a friend. Unlimited lifetime warranty is always included in those cases and even if they drop a can of coke on the running computer, it's your fault it breaks. Don't do it.

I tried my hand at it and was nothing but a pita to sell. Everyone wanted to buy at such a low ball price. Half of just the value of the components normally. I even started the price way high to counter the low ballers.

I recently switched careers from IT to a different (and blue collar) field due to burn-out. I made the mistake of listing my IT background on the resume (for that "oooh, IT, he must have brains" stereotype bias), and I've already been asked to do shit like fix printers, if I know how to work on their tax software, asking me security questions about their website, various ToS for their software questions, backups, what's wrong with his smartphone etc, all on the same low $15/hourly pay (blue collar job and was in line with my new degree so as a first job in the profession was fair pay).
I left after a couple months because I realized a big reason why he hired me was thinking I would do free IT work for his small business so he wouldn't have to outsource to another company.
I've since removed my IT background from my resume.

Once people get a whiff you even know when to double click vs single-click on the mouse, they latch on to you like a leech and not realize how irritating and frustrating and time consuming it is. And fuck you for life you ever dare not kiss their feet for presenting you the opportunity to work on their electronics afterwards too.

Well to be fair, it's not always all bad either. I recently got an offer from a strip club owner I know to come fix her computer for whisky, gin and pizza pay :D

I told her that if the offerings are that good, she'll have a hard time getting me to leave!

Someone else said Windows 10 doesn't require activation, and they are correct. In fact, the only thing disabled in a non activated Windows install is "personalization." There is a water mark on the bottom right hand side, but you can get rid of that with a registry addition.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > WindowsNT > CurrentVersion > SoftwareProtectionPlatform > Activation
Choose "Manual": change to 1

You can set whatever background you want also by simply right clicking any image and choosing "Set as background." Since I never change anything about Windows in the Personalization section, there is no reason to register Windows 10, ever. Everything works, even encryption.

If I were you, I'd just load 10 Pro from an ISO and tell them exactly what I told you, and let them make the choice to activate or not. You could change the registry DWORD beforehand so they won't see the watermark.

Personally, I gave up on Windows and all of the activation bullshit, like logging on with an account--which you cannot log in if you are offline, and all sorts of other MS bunghole ideas. I did activate my current Windows 10 Pro, but it was a digital license for $25.00 (not grey market, and totally legit) I got from Amazon. I extracted the digital key (which reported it is not limited), and so it's good forever now. All I have to do is download the ISO and install it, adding the digital key later.

Best tip: Move to Linux. My friend, who is a software engineer and who worked for NASDAQ for 10 years just said he moved his entire systems to Linux Ubuntu and loves it. He was in the process of loading Linux Steam on his gaming platform. He said the entire system runs better than Windows ever did and ever could. Can you imagine being completely free of Windows? I have a NUC knock off I'm going to load Linux on and start moving to Linux. I haven't used any MS products since Open Office back in 2008, and the only program I use from MS is Windows itself. I use absolutely zero MS products, hate them, hated Windows 8.1, hate MS's move to apptop, hate mandatory updates, and all the rest. (I did like MS Word, but Libre Office Writer is just as good).

The only thing I wish Linux had was a distro called "FREEDOM." That would have been much better than "Ubuntu." WTF is Ubuntu? In any event, the Migration has started. Linux has come of age.

^^ that is the typical rule. ive broken it once with a close friend and her parents. she is a PITA, they are awesome and always over pay me, including food, drinks, coffee....

I got so tired to getting called every other week to fix some malware or other problem that I migrated my parents and in-laws to linux. Now I do a maintenance once a year and call it a day.

My father in law managed to erase the app launchers from the Ubuntu dock once though lol. So I made sure to lock the dock :)

I just found that out recently...I have a legit W7 to W10 upgrade key which works fine on multiple machines (not used at the same time)...but I have 1 older WD mechanical hard drive and the key would not activate after I recently did a complete system hardware upgrade...everything still works fine but I get that 'Activate Windows' watermark on the bottom right of the screen

Dude, that shits fucking hard. We've been trying to update things for 5 years and I still can't understand it.

Me: Yeah, it's like anything you do. It takes years to get good at it. And, a fuck load of TIME doing nothing.

And then I use to get this shit from family too:

"Hey, I need a computer for me and the girls to work on and do homework. Ours won;t work anymore, and it will cost more to fix than it's worth. Can you find us something that is cheap but will do what we need?"

Me: Sure, give me a bout 8-16 hours over the next week to research NUCs and NUC clones and then finding you the best deal for the NUC with the best warranty and CS."

Next Week

Me: So I found you a really good miniPC for 180 bucks that will have all the power you need for business applications and web browsing, playing music, emailing etc.

"Oh, we already bought one though my company."

Me: Oh really? How much did it cost?

"$3, 000 dollars but we got a monitor and printer with it."

Me: So why didn't you tell me so I didn't take all this time finding you what you said you needed?

"Ummm, I dunno."

A couple of years ago my brother indicated to me (without actually apologizing) that he really fucked up fucking me off with his website. Said he lost countless hours trying to do shit and never being able to do it. He finally had to hire someone.

Just got sick of that shit. Now when people ask me questions about computers, I just say, "I dunno."

Now when people come to my house and see my custom computer I took literally hours and months to think out and build, paint, solder, etc., and say, "Can you build me one of those." I say, "Most probably not."

So busy lately but I'm going to get some pictures of my rig and a list of things I did to it and post a video of it for comments suggestions, and of course, hate. Here are two quickies.

It honestly with anything that is profession. The worst are if a family member you never talk too come too to fix so and so problem when they found out you are Computer/HVAC/Mechanic/Plumber what ever and want free work out of you. I don't even want to do shit for my immediate family anymore. Over the summer I was helping my brother move. His wife when and brought drinks for her and him and didn't get me anything. She told me to get a drink out of the tap. Family is so ungrateful for your help. It is like something that is to be expected. The biggest mistake I ever made was a friend asked me to build him a computer and I ended up financing him the computer. Of course after a few months he stopped paying me and we never spoke again.

Thats why you pay an extra $30 for an absolute control software license, when they stop paying you freeze the device.
Maybe you'll get the hardware and/or payment after that, maybe you wont, but at least he wont be able to do anything with it without knowing what hes doing.

That's why you get the money upfront. Building computers to sell is a fools errand. The only way I would build a PC for profit is agreeing, in writing, that I DO NOT MAINTAIN IT and any work after the build is ON THEM and if any parts go bad it's ON them to get them replaced and then PAY me to reinstall them. Most people won't do that and settle for a prebuild Costco special with a year's worth of Dell support, or whatever.

People just have no MFing clue how much time people like us put into computers. They just think its an easy deal and everything is fixed, for free. It's disrespectful.

There is money is computer repairs. I still take jobs fixing computers for people. If I can't fix it, they don't pay. And, I NEVER fix hardware. That's a mistake unless you're into warranty service, which is, again, BIG mistake. One thing I've noticed is when I charge a minimum of 50 bucks to fix a software issue, people tend not to call you all of the time to do shit like they would if they could slave your ass.

I make it very clear that if I come out and fix your computer in a hour, it's 50 bucks. If I fix it in 10 minuites, its 50 bucks. If I fix it and it breaks again, if it's a different issue, it's 50 bucks. If you don't like it, don't call me. Call the Geek Squad and pay 150 bucks. It's amazing how much a small 50 dollar charge stops repeat calls. It's like all of the sudden, their rig works good enough.

One summer I stripped the paint from my house with my (now ex) wife and had it repainted. The house transformed totally with the new color scheme and looks modern now. It took 2 months of manual grinding, person lifter rent, several worn out hand tools etc. A neighbor walks by after the job and compliments on the house.

He asks: Would you like to come to do the same to our house? Me: Hell no, no matter what you pay me :D

Do NOT use the links sent by auntjemima or any of those other "priced too good to be true" keys. Those keys are either bought in 3rd world countries and resold in US or purchased with stolen credit cards and resold at literally unbelievable prices. I've actually called my CDW rep (official Microsoft reseller) before and asked them "Where can I buy 1,000 Windows 10 keys on a roll" and he said there is no option like what people are selling online. The keys are illegal for resale in the United States. So, you can either think NewEgg, Amazon, CDW, etc are selling $10 keys for $140 and making 1000% markup ... or that they are not valid/legal for resale in the US. You decide what makes more sense. Plus, if you get caught m(re)selling that you could face serious penalties. As a business owner that would not be something you want to do.

The correct way to do what you are doing is to join the Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR) program which will sell legit licenses and COA. Microsoft is making changes to their refurbsher program so some links may not work right now. But you can email oemmar@microsoft.com for more information.

I bought my Win10 from someone here for like $10. Been perfect? I wouldn't do it on a regular basis, but a build every five years or so I can't see why not.

If the club had a breakfast buffet I would visit there every day lol. On some slow days when there aren't many customers we order takeaway and have a picnic, that's about it. Some nights I take the girls to sauna with me, us all naked of course like finnish sauna is supposed to be. Sometimes I get to give them body massages, which is much more fun than just watch them dance :D But admittedly takes a lot of self restraint rubbing the sweaty hot body of a professional dancer, to appear cool while doing it. Things are a bit hard to hide when you don't have clothes on...

Just use a Windows ISO from MS and install it without registering. Done deal.

You and auntjemima are literally better off just pirating your OS. If the key is not for legal resale in the US, the fact that it activates does not imply a legit license. By pirating at least you're not feeding money into the stolen CC business.

It's not illegal to install a non registered Windows ISO. He's selling the computer, not the OS. Anyone can install a Windows ISO for anyone else, anytime, and it's perfectly legal. And, you can charge for your time.

You probably won't get caught, but are you willing to risk that you could?
