IDE to SATA converter?

I turned on my external HDD last night and noticed it wasn't being recognized by my computer. Either the HDD is bad or my External Enclosure failed. I am hoping it is the external enclosure. It is a cheap plastic case so I think this is the issue. I was looking at this and was wondering if anyone has had any luck with something similar? It is an IDE hard drive and my MoBo doesn't have any IDE connectors. Should I go pick this up so I can hook it up as a slave drive or are these things generally junk?

Alright good deal I will try it. Luckily I have a frys that is local so if it doesn't work then I can take it back.

Thanks

Yes they work but just a heads-up...I have a similiar unit and sometimes it takes up to 5 mins. for an IDE unit to be detected.

Mine is a more involved multi IDE/SATA/3.5"/2.5" unit that sends all signals via USB output.

Still, it may take awhile for the IDE drive to be detected on your unit.

I've used them before, just remember if you pay a little more for a better one. You will like it the long run

And don' t forget, you may need a molex to sata power connector if you don't have any spare molex power connectors. I have one. I got it for $.99.

Well either my HDD died or I wasn't patient enough for the drive to get recognized. I plugged it in, booted up the pc and it was installing software and then rebooted. I was expecting it to work because it was installing the drivers and had me reboot but it wasn't showing up. Either I didn't wait long enough like the above poster said or the drive was dead. I will try it again when I get home. I didn't think to check device manager either.

May need to take it back but we'll see tonight.

I have one of these..had gotten me out of a few pickles and is great for pulling data off corrupted laptop HDs..

Very useful to have when you have one..if nothing, buy it for a just in case item.

I have one of those Vantec adapters, got it from Fry's actually, and have had great success with it. Was using it in a client's machine for a short period of time. He had one of those Seagate drives affected by the firmware so, when he sent it in for RMA he needed a temp drive to keep his machine up and running; only problem was the secondary drive he had was IDE and I didn't want him using it with the optical drive on the same cable so, I loaned him the adapter and he re-installed the OS using that IDE drive as his primary "SATA" one without issues.

For the $15 I paid for it, I've had nothing but success. Even used the drive in my Hackintosh for a bit; OSX had no issues using the drive, it just looks any other SATA with the adapter.

Good luck...
