IDE in raid?

Hello, I have a neo2 a64 board.. and 3 harddrives:
80 gb WD, 40 gb WD, 20 gb WD.. i want to put the 40 and 20 into a raid 0, but they are both IDE.. is that possible?
and is it posiible to just put 2 HD's into raid and keep the 80 out? thanks :cool:
 
Unless you have a couple IDE-to-SATA adapters or a PCI RAID card of some sort, you won't be RAIDing your drives.

RAID, by definition, requires at least two drives. Also, bear in mind that all drives in a RAID will take on the size of the smallest drive in the array. So, if you were to put your 40 and 20 into a RAID 0, the total array size would be 40GB.

Furthermore, single-channel RAID is a bad, bad thing. For optimal performance, I'd recommend one channel per drive.

Raid-0 isn't really worth much in anything anyway. Honestly I haven't played around with raiding partitions in Windows. When you set up a raid 0 you end up with the capacity of the smallest drive times the number of disks, so if you raided your 40 and 20 you'd end up with a 40GB raid 0 and 20GB of extra space on the 40.

In Linux you can do twisted shit... you could append the 20 and 40 together to make a 60GB volume, then partition the 80 as a 60GB and a 20GB volume. The 20GB part of the 80 would end up as a non-raid volume, but you could stripe or mirror the 60GB partition on the 80 and the 60GB appended volume from the 20 and 40 to end up with a 60GB raid-1 or a 120GB raid-0 volume.

i did something similar once, oyu should have seen windows have a fucking heart attack when i installed it on another drive for dual boot

As an owner of a RAID 0, I use it for two things only. My Windows Swap file is on that drive (faster reads and writes plus the file doesn't contain imporant data so if the array dies, I don't lose anything) and as the drive that I record video do from my TV Tuner card. As a hobby, I convert video files and VHS tapes to DVDs. The array is nice because it can record the streaming video smoothly and quickly. Since it is only temp data, if the array fails I only have to re-record it on the new array. I don't store any data on the drive, it's purely temp usage.
