I have a Q6600@ 3200Ghz on an Asus P5K-E Motherboard with 4 gig ram and windows 7 64 Bit. I raided 3 320 gig Seagate drives in raid 5 and have a 320 Maxtor as the windows drive.

I want to keep the raid 5 intact when adding the new SSD. Crucial M4 128G drive. This array has all my Pictures and Music. I know I should really back them up but do not have a place big enough.

*Too bad for Sandforce drives I cannot take any bluescreens and have not had 1 in over 3 years.

In my BIOS I have it set to raid can I change it to ACHI and keep the RAID array? Do I need AHCI to get TRIM?

I don't wanna clone windows I will just reinstall what I want. I backup settings to the raid 5 array.

Well after a LOT of searching-
Raid Mode is as subset of AHCI Leave the BIOS set to Raid.
Basically put the new drive in, install Seven. add all the drivers and the Intel Rapid storage app and away I go.

I can confirm that you can have a separate raid on your intel controller and put the ssd by itself and it will be treated the same as if it were in ahci mode, just with the added capabilities of being added to a raid if you wanted to

I think that "ACHI" mode just disables the raid bios vs. "RAID" mode but otherwise there isn't much that changes.

You can have a pair of drives and set them up in hardware raid on something like an ICH9R, then take those drives out and put them in another motherboard with something like a regular old ICH7 and it will recognize the drives. You won't be able to make changes to it, and you probably wouldn't be able to boot from it, but the drives would still work in raid.

Well it works extra well.

Finally got the SSD installed just like changing the originall drive would have been.

Intels states leave the BOIS in RAID for both ACHI and RAID to Function.

It really works. Sytem was set to boot from DVD-ROM drive and install proceeded normally. I then was able to access the RAID 5 array to get all my driver files. I did have the network running also so I coulda gone to the web.
