hello everybody! first post, and i wish i would have found this site earlier.

anyway, looking to build a new rig:

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
some gaming, along the lines of nwn/nwn2, mw/mw2, dao, oblivion, probably some civ/starcraft2. no interest in crysis. definitely want to be able to impulse buy a game and play it though.

a ton of encoding. several tb of video to chew through.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
let's call it $1500. if we can do less, great. i'm cool with going a little over (just have to switch from short's huma lupa and steaks to sierra nevada and top ramen for a couple weeks). gas money, tax and shipping are of no consideration in the budget.

3) Where do you live?
the land that was ruined by democrats and auto company bailouts...michigan. i've got a microcenter nearby. i'd prefer to keep my $$$ in the local economy. if i'm going to make a trip, i might as well get the most instant gratification i can.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
cpu, mobo, ram, hd/dvd/brd, psu

maybe video card

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
i've got a bfg 9800gt (1gb) & i am set on a cm storm scout case

6) Will you be overclocking?
nope, or at least no intention of for the immediate future. when this rig is replaced by the next, maybe.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
22" acer (1680x1050). i may hook up a 1080p tv at some point.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
within the next 2 weeks

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
nothing special

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
ugh, i'm going to have to buy windows 7 64 bit.

11) Extra considerations
the parts list i've got in mind is as follows:
-i7 930
-evga x58 sli le
-corsair 650w modular psu
-6gb mushkin blacklines (3x2gb)
-some sort of cooler (leaning venomous x, that way i can make bad krisiun jokes)
-32gb ssd
-mechanical hd

i'm feeling confident with my hw selection, with the exception of the video card. i'm looking for either validation in keeping the 9800gt or upgrading to something like an hd5850. not looking for a gpu-weiner extention, just a solid build that will get me through another 6-12 months of gaming.

thanks in advance,
me

Which Mushkin Blackline RAM are you talking about? There's 9 different Mushkin Blackline 6GB RAM.

I recommend the following SSD and HDD:
$125 - Intel SSDSA2MP040G2R5 2.5" 40GB SSD
$80 - Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

GPU wise, get either the HD 5770 or the HD 5830. Both of those will be suitable for 1680x1050. HD 5850 is a bit overkill for 1680x1050.
