i7-920 C0 temps

Hi all,

Looking at my temps for my i7 920 that's at stock settings using HW Monitor, while running Prime95 with in place FFTs; My temps hit max 60/58/57/54 - this is the CORE temps, so when I put those temps there, I mean 60 for core 1, 58 for core 2 and so forth.

This is with a TRUE-120 that has a single fan on it, nothing special fan wise. I can look at the brand then.

Do these temps seem high for a fan with medium airflow, no OC? I've been eyeing an H70 or something, and I'm curious if that move would be worth it, or if I've done something wrong? The thermal paste is AS5 and has been on the CPU for probably 2 years now.

Closing P95 drops Core 0 down to 45C instantly, and then the cores all finally cool down some - I'll update in a few minutes with the final idle temps in Windows.

Edit: Idle is at 40/39/39/36

Thanks!

Take the side panel off your case and see if temps improve.

If they don't, you should look into remounting the heatsink.
If they do, your case has poor airflow and some fan rearrangement may be in order.

Side note: Those temps are perfectly safe for long term use, if you never plan to overclock the chip you'd save a lot of time by just accepting higher temps.

If it helps, my C0 runs hot. Touches 90c full load @3.96Ghz 1.30v with CMv6GT @ 2100rpm (2x120mm (loud!))

My i7 930 with the H50 Corsair cooler is idleing at 27* C. If that helps any. :D

What are you room temps and does you case have enough ventilation? those idle temps are BAD might want to remount with AS5 also add a fan for push pull on the cooler

C0s suck on air3.6-3.8, but with water and volts (1.4v) mine hit 4.2ghz at launch

I have a release day C0 920.
I only use water.
In odere to get a good OC you have to increase the core voltage amongst other things, depending on the mainboard.
My cpu runs at 1.425 V and 4.2 GHz very happily. Under full stress I might see 60C.
My idle temps are in the mid 30C
Gaming hardly changes the temps, maybe I'll se 40C.

You might consider a higher CFM fan for your heatsink and/or reseat it with new TIM before you start to overclock it.

Try a noctua cooler, specifically the model with twin 120mm fans. Use with noctua thermal paste. I have it on my D0 i7 930 and I love it! With a coolermaster HAF 932, the cpu exhaust air gets immidiately pushed out of the case by the rear case fan. Good case air flow is just as important as a good cooler.

Those aren't idle, he said running Prime.

I don't think theyre that bad... What case.

My c0 with thermalright ultra 120 extreme @3.8 with 1.225 vcore, runs in the mid 60's under full load and this is with a dusty heatsink/fan that I haven't cleaned in months. My idle temps are low-mid 30's.

What's your room temp?

I have a I7 920 on a H50 with only the BLCK turned up too 165 which set it to like 3540mhz but idk if i have a c0 model or not. At max i hit 82c and then just chilling im at 36c dont know if that helps...

HAF932, so I've no circulation issues. My room is ~72F usually. Also, on the stock thermalright fan, mobo controlled...I can try forcing the fan to 100% speed since it's hooked up to the mobo's fan header.

In your guys opinion, should I:
nab a new fan and reseat
Grab a new aircooler (sigh...again?!)
Grab something simple like the H70

Thanks!

The h70 is as good as the simularly price air coolers, so i'd not go that route....

I'd try a reseat but i like tuniq tx-2

When did you apply the artic 5? You want to seriously push that cpu get the noctua

The AS5 is two years old.

Would the newer Tuniq heatsink REALLY make that much of a diff over the TRUE-120?

Your temperatures are absolutely fine. I think changing your heatsink would be a waste of time and money.

The temps you post in the OP are fine running prime.
Just remember if you up the clock and VCore they will go higher under a stress load.

I would simply remove the HS and clean and reapply the TIM of your choice, AS5 is as good as any. I like Noctura NT-H1 because it doesn't require a curing time, just my preferences.
As I said, you might consider another fan pulling air toward the outlet fan, or crank up the fan duty cycle on the BIOS, if you plan to overclock.

I would not buy another heatsink.

Something seem weird there. Are you saying they go lower after shutting down Prime95, than they were before the start of the test? Are you in a tropical environment? How hot is your room? I have a CO and my idle temps, as registered with (HWmonitor ver.1.17.0) are 38,37,41,37. Those temps are with a 185*20 (3700) CPU speed on a Hyper 212+ cooler.

No - I'm saying that on closing P95, the hottest core drops to 45C instantly and then the cool off a few more degrees from there; as such - given the drop off takes a split second - I suspect my thermal paste is in decent shape and the heatsink is doing it's job for the most part...else it'd take longer to drop to 45C. I'll record a video of it if it helps.
