I7-4790k high idle temps

Hello everyone, I recently built a new tower, specs:
intel Core i7-4790k
ASUS MAXIMUS VII GENE micro board
16 gig G.SKILL Trident X Series
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 psu
MSI GTX 970 4GD5T OC
Corsair 240 case
Corsair H100i (stock fans atm)

my issue is the cpu seems to run a little warm for idle, I've seen posts where where it runs from 20-30c in idle with this cooler. I've reset the thermal paste and the H100i just if i messed up.
using real temp i get vales of 42-39c, not extremely high, but when i start playing games it shoots up to 60-70.
I was hopping to get a lower temp with the H100i
if this seems normal let me know or if you have any advice on getting it lower let me know.
I am thinking about getting new fans I dont like these stock one too much. they dont seem to push as much air.

thank you,

I have the same CPU and cooler, although I've swapped the fans out for some high static pressure noctua fans.

I'm also assuming you're not overclocking, and you've not adjusted the voltage at all..

Assuming that the cooler block is in fact well-seated with an appropriate amount of thermal paste, your problem could be insufficient airflow. 60-70c is a safe temp under load for the CPU.

Think about the temperature -> fan speed feedback loop.

If you set a target temperature of 70c for the CPU under load, at the miminum fan speed, while the cpu is idling, the waterblock might bring it down to the 30s.

Under load, the fans will spin just fast enough to keep the CPU at 70c. Lowering the target temp will cause the fans to speed up earlier. Trade more noise for lower load temp.

I'm taking this concept to the noise extreme; my goal is a nearly silent machine, even under load. When I eventually OC this CPU, I'll probably scrap the noise goal and crank down the target load temp.

I hope that's helpful.

Try running the fans at max speed while stress testing the CPU. Then you'll see the full cooling potential of the system as currently implemented.

I'm running a 4790K with a H100i as well and my idle temps are generally around 20-30C. Using the stock thermal paste and stock fans in a push configuration.

Under load it probably gets up to 60-70C or so (OCed to 4.7 GHz) but I've never had any issues with those temps.

Check the backplate it have only one possible mounting position and its This one.. that's the first thing to check..

second thing check if the block its loose.. in that case This Post will help you a LOT to solve temp problems with the h100i.

When i run into these types of things, i set the block, screw it on tight, and then take it off to look for a good IHS footprint. It's a pain in the butt, but the best way to determine if your block is not flush with the IHS of your chip and thus causing "warm spots."

Also, too much paste can cause these types of issues.

humm i need to check the back plate for sure.
also I noticed the wobble that the back plate had, i was going to pick up some plastic washers for it
hey guys thanks for the advice.

What paste are you using? and can you check if the h100i pump is running at full speed (reading ~2200-2300rpm on software like Corsair Link)?

Easy way to check for the odd mounting issue is to just press down on the block while you're stress testing and see if your temperatures go down.

I am using this $17 cooler and it keeps the cpu really cool,

yes that's deep idling at probably sub 18C room temp.. try again after some load and/or gaming/work.... and that's without take into consideration your RAMS are running in single channel due to your 17$ cooler blocking slots.. amazing machine with a crap cooler that's sad..

60* at 100% load, and ya, I noticed my ram was single channel. I am going to swap coolers as soon as I find one that doesn't block the ram.

What is your room temp?

dunno, 13*C maybe. I am in the garage in my little cubicle I bought and it's a little chilly in here.
this is pic from last week or so with the Q9550 system on the table. I bought the same case for the new setup so it still looks the same now as it did then.
