I was thinking of hopping on the i7 bandwagon but need some clarification on certain areas.
I just need a new processor, motherboard, RAM, and a cooling solution at the moment. I am in Canada if anything matters.

First off, with regards to the processor, these are the following options available to me:

CPU --------- Price - Multi - QPI - Uncore Multi

Xeon x3440 - $231 -x19 - 4.27 GT/s 16
Xeon x3450 - $279 -x20 -4.27 GT/s 16
Core i7 860 - $305 -x21 -4.8 GT/s 18

1.Are there any significant disadvantages to be using 4.27 GT/s rather than 4.8GT/s?
2.Does the high uncore frequency on the 860 make a large difference?
3. I'm just trying for a 3.8GHz overclock, would the x3440 be able to satisfy this at relative ease with a 19x multi or should I keep it safe and go for the x3450 (and even the i7 860)?

With regards to memory, it has shot up in price quite alot. A Corsair Dominator kit for $100 is now $150. Does anyone have any particular suggestions for good overclocking memory at reasonable prices?

Motherboard - I think I'll go for the P7P55D-E Pro or maybe the eVGA FTW (the FTW is only $160ish while the Pro is $192)

Cooling solution - I've searched but I don't believe Prolimatech products are available in Canada any further. Is a Venemous X for $65 good enough? Would the Scythe Gentle Typhoon be a good fan for it?

Thanks!

I run the Xeon X3440, Gskill ram, Evga p55le and the coolermaster 212 plus.
I'm at 3.515, but my ram is holding me back- I have 1333mhz ram. Don't get the dominators, it offers no advantage for the price.

1) Not really

3) Yes.

RAM wise, G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 RAM are good overclocking RAM. Dominator RAM are rarely worth it.

Mobo wise, either of those mobos are good choices.

HSF wise, never heard of those HSF. However I'ved heard good things about Coolermaster 212 Plus.

The Venemous X is a sucessor to the TRUE 120 Extreme. But nonetheless, I think I might go with the Zalman CNPS10X Extreme instead ($69.99...no need to grab another fan).

gwarren007 - do you mind sharing some values used for the overclock? (CPU Voltage/QPI/etc.)

Is there anyone out there with an eVGA FTW + a Zalman CNPS10X Extreme? Supposdly it has clearance issues with the P55 Classified 200 (can mount vertically only).

can i ask what the difference between an i5 750 and the x3440 is? or like why would you choose one over the other?
