I've finally realized that it's time to get my son a new gaming PC built. He has a system with a FX 8350 cpu, 990 mobo with 16gb DDR3 and a GTX 1060 6 gb CPU. He does jump all over the gaming arena on the games he plays. But, mostly it's mmorpg games.

I have on hand:

i5 6600k (overclocked) w/a MSI Z170a Krait 3X gaming motherboard

OR

Ryzen 1600x w/ a Gigabyte GA-AB-350 Gaming 3 mobo

with:

Water cooling or Hyper 212 EVO

2x8gb DDR4 3000

GTX 1060 6gb GPU

Which system will get him by for the next couple years? I was also looking at selling the i5 6600k and motherboard as an option and looking at buying an i5 8600k with a z370 motherboard.

Would the i5 6600k "keep pace" as a gaming cpu over the next 2-3 years?

depending on what res hes playing at any of those will do. if he will strictly be gaming then i5. if he wants to stream like the cool kids or multi task in any way I think the 1600x would be better.

I think the 1600x will be better at everything. I'd definitely take 6C/12T over 4C/4T now and with future games.

1600x
Not even close.
Hi res gaming and more threads is the future.

I found a good deal with the i5-8600k (with free Razer Ornata keyboard) and an ASrock Z370 Killer SLI motherboard for $360. That was $90-$100 more than my Ryzen 1600X or 1600 cpu/mobo combos. He can judge which one he likes better between the 2-3 systems and always switch systems. I'm trying to sell the i5-6600k and motherboard on craigslist for $250. If it doesn't sell, I can always build another system for my 29yr old son.

I appreciate the opinions and responses.
