11/30/05 I bought a maxtor maxline 3 250GB HD from newegg. 16mb cache, sata 150,5 year warranty. It arrives and it takes about 2 weeks for it to fail (or at least to isolate my problems to the HD). So i call newegg and RMA the thing...2 weeks later I get the new HD. I had to wait a week because of my neoHE which was being repalced by antec for mobo issues, and when I put the HD in today, the new one is defective too. So I call newegg and after spending a half hour on hold all the girl tells me is that i can send it back to them and they will send me a replacement. No cross shipping or advance shipping is available, even if they charge my credit card. I'm pissed. I even asked if I could upgrade to a different hard drive and pay in full and then get refunded for this one. She said no. That is really shitty customer service if you ask me, and I work for best buy, so I've seen some shitty customer service.

I will post a very negative review on there but I have given them the chance to correct the situation. I wrote them a few e-mails with contact information and told them to respond if they wished to resolve the situation, otherwise they will lose not just my business but the 100s of referrals I give them each week for ram and other things we don't carry at best buy.

Do not buy HDDs on Newegg. They do not pack them for shipping properly, no suprise it came DOA. Sorry to hear that, use ZZF for your HDD needs next time.

what are you talking about?
i bought 3 wd raptors.
each were wrapped in its own anti static bag and a bubble package thing. then they were all wrapped in bubble wrap and in a box
thats good packaging

Read the sticky, Killer.

I can't see what NewEgg did wrong here (aside from the packaging). They say that they don't cross-ship on their policies page, don't they? Why does everyone expect all companies to break their stated policies when they have a problem?

I don't expect them to give me anything for free, all I want is a working hard drive. I've been minus this hard drive for 2 months, which means they have 100 dollars of my money without any poduct being in my hands. I don't want them to cross ship. I offered to buy a new HD and have them refund me for the other one. All I want is a new hard drive that works damnit. I can't keep waiting 2 weeks each time I RMA these POS maxtor HD's and never get a working hard drive. It's not about policy, its about customer service. I work for the number 1 electronics retailer in the world, best buy, and i know shitty customer service, and i know that if this happened to a customer in our store, we would make it right, which is all i'm asking. I'm not asking for free merchandise, just a hard drive that works quickly. If that is too much to ask then i'm sorry and I will never order online again, from any vendor.

Terrible shipping policy for fragile shock sensitive device like a hard drive. They should be shipped in a padded form fitting package.

instead of dealing with newegg you could just rma the drive to the manufacturer... they prolly ship in better packaging too and might do advance shipping

Yeah I would have gone directly to the manifacturer since they will do advanced replacements.

And yes, newegg does do a shitty job on wraping their drive, sometimes thier bubble wrap doesn't cover the entire drive so you have one exposed area banging the bottom of the box.

I always try and get my stuff from zzf, can't beat 2 day shipping... oh and you also don't have to bribe them that 3-4 dollar fee for them to do their job like they should be ;)

I gave up on newegg a long time ago, especially when they ship you bad products and they wont honor it... even if it was shipping damage... they just simply turn the cheek and tell you to go to the manifacturer  They do not care about customer service, they care about revenue.

What makes the the most mad abou this whole thing is when they finally do accept something that was damaged during shipping or arrived doa, they wont do advanced replacement and you are faced with two options: 1) wait a few weeks for them to strag along or 2) buy the product locally and return the fualty hardware (and in this case they charge you 15% restocking fee for a broken freakin product). I do not understand how you can be charged a restocking fee on a broken product that they couldn't deliver????? Sometimes I need a product right away and I cant wait the extra added weeks.

Yeah newegg sucks.

Static bag = Good.
Bubble wrap = Bad, very bad. Bubble wrap does not compress as well as foam does. Also, as others have pointed out, Newegg's bubble wrap doesn't always cover all sides of the drive.
Peanuts = Bad, very bad. Peanuts, by their very nature, allow the product to slide in the box, which is a VERY bad thing for a HDD. The goal in HDD packing is to make the drie immobile in the box, while having enough compressible material arond the drive to protect should the box get punctured or crushed. Newegg simply doesn't account for the need to immobilize the drive in the box, and that creates an unacceptable risk for every drive they sell.

EDIT: Do I need to make an announcement in this forum on this issue?

I don't buy drives from Newegg either, last time I bought one from them it was wrapped in ONLY bubble wrap, barely enough to go around it, and was sat on the bottom of the box, with no peanuts under it, and then some peanuts around it and all the other components I bought on TOP of it. The drive worked fine and still does to this day, but I buy from ZZF now since they know how to pack one properly.

Newegg needs to teach their shipping dept. how to properly pack items.

I used to love the egg, but now go elsewhere if I can.
I had some bad memory, so I RMA'd it and shipped it back. They sent me the SAME exact peice back. I took pictures of it and sent the pics and said "send me another, dont do that again"

Hmm think I can still go to the manufacturer even if I have a RMA number form newegg already? Because I'd rather do that.

Yeah, just let the RMA expire by itself, 14 days I think.

it is probably cheaper for newegg to piss off a few customers and to replace the small percentage of hard drives that do get messed up from improper packaging than to pay the extra cost to package them correctly..

i have bought plenty of hard drives from newegg.. but in the future i will go elsewhere.. i get all my other stuff from them though..

also.. on a side note: the 2.5gb samsung drive my dad got me from newegg in oh.. 1998? something like that.. was packed very well.. it was in a box that had 3 inches of foam around the drive in all directions.. i think we still have that box somewhere.. so it seems that they decided to ditch using those boxes somewhere along the line.

Well i'm aparently having a really good week...because the raptor i ordered from newegg to hold me over while i wait on my maxtors just died after 2 weeks of normal use. WD is doing advanced replacement for me though so i'm not too unhappy with that. Newegg on the other hand....i dont even know what to do with them.

I ordered a raptor a few years ago from them. Then, about a year ago, I ordered 2 more and put all 3 into a RAID0 configuration - and it has been flawless for over a year now.

However, I had horror stories back with the IBM DeathStars and newegg. I eventually gave up and that's when I bought my raptor. I can't really blame the egg for 4 consecutive failing IBM drives since they were known to be terrible, but it still pissed me off. I gave them another chance and I do not regret it (at this time of writing).

As for the shipping on my 3 raptors, eh...I guess I just got lucky - they should change it, though.

I love Newegg, but the HDDs I have ordered with the exception of 2.5" drives (always packaged better for some reason) have not had adequate shipping protection. ZZF on the other hand has much better packaging.

Actually I'd say Neweggs packaging has been worse lately, I ordered a mobo a few months ago and it came stuffed in a FedEx Medium (i think) box with no padding around it. Of course it ended up being DOA.

Hello HardForum members and sorry for the delayed response,

Thanks a bunch for the informative feedback about the less than favorable packaging. We want to make sure that all our customer have the best experience when shopping on our website.

With all the information gathered from this thread we will notify Management about the unacceptable packaging, for Hard Drives seems to be the common item, and do our best to ensure that all products are being properly handled.

So hopefully in the near future any and all problems will be remedied. If on a future order anyone has a packaging/damaged item issue please feel free to PM me or even try our newly incorporated Live Chat feature on our website and we'll be happy to help you out.

Thank you again for all your thoughts and suggestion.

Sincerely,

Newegg Customer Support

awesome

I really hope you guys do improve on the way you package your Hard Drives. Usually it's fine for me, but as some people have said already that sometimes the drives have an exposed area that is not being covered by the bubble wrap, or the bubbles can pop on one edge leaving that edge exposed (actually that happened to me two days ago).

I've ordered probably around 50 drives from newegg, and they've all been fine. No DOA drives ever. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've decided I'm not going to take any more chances and I'll just order from somewhere else until this "problem" is resolved.

Does this mean that you (that is, Newegg) will be shipping hard drives in the manufacturer-recommended foam, or that such a plan has been brought forward? I would love to single-source things when I build machines, and proper packaging on hard drives would make this a reality.

I've always had good RMA service from Newegg. I do agree that thier hard drive packaging is very poor. Sometimes the bubble wrap doesn't even go all the way around!

i hope my hard drive for my laptop will arrive ok. this was the first time i bought something from newegg so i hope it goes well. :)

Well I guess nothing is perfect when it comes to shipping and it's bad luck that your having so much trouble. You could try CDW if your definitly not going to buy from newegg again. CDW is generally a little more expensive but I use them for anything that I want to arrive quickly. I'm in Michigan and they ship from Chicago so I usually get my orders from them within 20 hours. They also use the bubble bag packing material but I have never had a defective part come from them.

The only trick about CDW is that you have to tell them not to hold your entire order if 1 item is on backorder.

Hey you know, Maxtor MaxLines might just have some problems with NF4's. ;) Look up Diamondmax's too, since they are pretty much the same. They say you can upgrade the firmware, but some people are still having issues. I've actually been hesitant to pull the trigger on a maxtor drive. I need a drive and I do want this one.

Yes, great service beyond any doubt, though some time ago i too received a poorly packaged hard drive that was DOA. It was wrapped in bubble wrap, with one corner of the drive fully unprotected from shock.

Easy killer, he's just re-affirming what some others here have said, as am i. Didn't you notice that the newegg reps are monitoring this thread for feedback?

I order probably about $2-3,000 worth of parts a week from newegg, and they are not the company they were 2.5 years ago when i started ordering from them.

I agree that their hard drives are not packaged well at all.... the last shipment I recieved had two hard drives in it, both were at the bottom of the box wrapped in bubble wrap, and the bubble wrap was barely even attatech to the drive

you would think with the money they charge for shipping, (usually between $50-75 for all the parts for a computer) they could package things a little better.

Hey, is the newegg site down ?

Weird, I typed in the address and the first time, it said the server couldn't be found. Upon refreshing, however, the problem seemed to disappear. Probably something to do with new servers / DNS caching or something. </talking out of my ass>
