I seem to have an Engineering sample e6400

I bought an e6400 from stallion tek and it came in today. It says intel confidential and I was like WTF.... anyway put it in and it started booting at 3.39ghz !! I believe it was 8x by 425mhz I only have the stock heatsink until tomorrow so I clocked it all back down. Anyone have experience with these? Oh and the multi is unlocked.

Done on a Gigabyte DS3 with 2 gb ddr2 667

Looks like you got a X6800 ES.

Theres a thread on someone buying an X6800 and getting a E6300 lol.

I'm gonna be honest with you...keep it :D

The other possibility is the FSB of the board you just installed is manually set to 425. In other words already overclocked. Is the multi unlocked up, in other word can you go to x9?

it also reports having 4mb cache in cpuz and in the bios? I know they have 4 and 2 is disabled but does it report as 2mb in cpuz?

I think i'll play around with it 8) I'll post some OC results tomorrow when the heatsink gets here.

LOL now I'm really having mixed feelings. Have you checked at reseller ratings before you bought the e6400? I've got mine enroute and should be here friday from stallion. Everyone been getting ES from these jokers. Personally, what I have to say is, if it overclocks well, my mouth is shut and I'll finally be "one of the cool boys with an ES". If it's stinky stink, I'm going to yell.

edit: it looks like even es models have a datestamp on them. What's yours? Man if the es really has 4mb unlocked, and can oc to 3.6, I'll have a field day. Definitely wouldn't want to lap an ES though :( Was looking forward to doing so again

wraslor, I'm curious to have a conversation with you about the cpu, and am not sure if you're still online at the moment. If you use aim, maybe shoot ziddey an IM if it wouldn't inconvenience you too much? I have a feeling I'm in the same boat. Thanks!

I won't soon forget the term "engineering sample". After great reviews I bought an Asus P5W DH mobo. Then it turned out the mobo couldn't boot with C2D because it had only been tested with "engineering samples" of C2D and couldn't boot with retail units. Asus was telling everyone who couldn't boot with it to use $50 Celerons to be able to update BIOS.

decided to reoload windows last night sorry for not repsonding sooner. I'll get aim installed later and look you up zig. as for the 425 i believe your right the mobo just came like that. The multi being able to go down is news to me I was under the impression all c2d were multi locked. Still makes me wonder about the "intel confidential" on the cpu. Cpuz shows it as an e6400 rev a1 stepping 1

That chip should OC very well

Yea being able to adjust Multi down not up is definately normal for a e6400. No idea what "intel confidential" is about.

On the up side your board came pre-overclocked. On the down side, it makes me wonder a bit if it was new , in other words used for O/C and re-boxed for some reason.

I bought the board from a forum member so i'm not suprised. I'm playing it safe for the moment and running orthos at 3ghz. I got the newest cpuz and yep it says e6400 es so i guess that answers my question lol.

Given that it is marked "Intel Confidential", it sure does sound like you've gotten your hands on an "engineering sample". It shoud not have a five character "sSpec" number stamed on it (say SL9SP) but rather a four (or more) letter "Q Number". Pop the heatsink off, wipe away the thermal grease, and record the info your your chip. Post the info from your chip, and do a search on the "Q Number".

OP, I'll save you the trouble. Mine's not installed.

INTEL CONFIDENTIAL
QPGY ES MALAY
-----------------
L617A856

And there's clear marks on the ihs showing it's been used before

Update: Threw it in my system. Testing 8x450=3600 with max stable vcore set in bios (1.59v set, 1.57v idle, 1.52v load) and so far it's doing alright. I put a nug of as ceramique in the center of the ihs and threw the apogee on. Seeing load temps in orthos around 65-67 at the moment, which is well understandable. If it's stable, then no complaints I suppose :) I remember when I was on the hunt for ES just to have one.

well some guy is narcing on them anyways so looks like the ES stuff is gonna stop soon.ohhh its the guy above me narcing. GG bro GG

I think you might actually be referring to me, unless someone else is too. I did write intel an email saying that I got a confidential from a reseller and was asking if they had a program to turn it in for a real one. While still not fair play by stallion, if this turns out alright I'll let it slide ;)

One thing I did notice about these ES is that in cpuz it shows multiplier range even with speed step disabled. Not sure if this was how cpuz was written or if ES can tune multiplier possibly without affect NBCC, which would be interesting.

LOL..good luck with that...you might end up with NO CPU...The one you have belongs to Intel...You should pray they don't want it back....

Haha yeah it like I'm in the clear though. In the reply I got, Intel stated that the ES I have carries no warranty whatsoever and that I should return it for a real one through the seller.

Both you and wraslor should post your overclock info in this thread:

We can always use more Engineering Sample overclocks to compare to the retail ones!

I'll do that. Thing is with both e6400's I have, I try and try and try until I can hit 3.6. It took a long time and it still might not be 100% stable for the old one, but I threw the ES in and it booted right up at the old settings of 3.6 and I came right into testing. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to do higher, although I'm doubting it. At least maybe less voltage. I'll post once I conclude voltage needed. 1.52v runs quite hot, even under water.

edit: cool looks like there's a x6800 with the same week and almost the same code as my e6400.

right now i'm running it at 3.0 stock volts. I'll be playing around with it more in the next few days to see what it can do. Right now load temps are pretty low at 45 under load using the arctic cooler freezer7 pro (or whatever its called lol).

wow that's nice. are those coretemp readings?

yep coule degree diff beetween cores. I'm also using that zalman thermal grease seems to work pretty good.

damned impressive! I can't get enough airflow across my rad so it's really saturated at this point. Seeing load around 63-68. Rad blowing hot air at me

I've got a pretty decent case a thermaltake xaser V has 2 side fans blowing right on it, front intake rear and top exhaust. Idle is about 24. Using Tat to monitor temps.

haha i've got an ultra wizard that i crammed a 2x120 rad into. I was originally imagining it'd keep case temps down but they're hotter than ever. Guess I should reverse the fans on the rad

I ordered a E6700 from Stallion Tek. It also says Intel Confidential. Here is what is on the chip:

Intel Confidential
QLL0 ES MALAY
80557PH0674M
L610A732

I know the last numbers say the week the chip was made. Copyright is 05.

How does Stallion Tek even know what version of processor they are giving out? BTW, my chip was DOA. Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe. Updated bios, swapped my Pentium 560 back in and it booted fine. Returning tomorrow.

I wonder if they have a retail store to pick up at, I'd like to go down and hand pick my ES if I was to order from them.

Where are they getting their chips, they have Conroe-L's listed already...

Can you read the thread before posting.

It turned out it was not a ES, just his board came overclocked (425FSB)

what in the heck possessed you to do that? you got a ES CPU.....and you rat out the retailer that basically gave you a great deal? not to mention you pretty much squashed many other people's chances at getting one themselves....what a braniac!! :(

obviously you havent read the thread, Intel CPU's with the "Q" code, "ES" in the code, and stamped "Intel Confidential" are ES CPU's.......yes his board was pre-overclocked, but these are still ES chips

I was thinking about it and began to but later stopped. I was pretty upset at being given ES while I had ordered what was said to be oem. But then I thought about it and, since I got a b1, which is pretty much production grade, and come to think more to my senses, I've always wanted an ES, and it overclocks decently, I never continued with the emails.

I did however get luckier than many. A bunch of guys are getting early A steppings that don't even have a valid cpuid string, and allegedly some folks saying there's some rare minute issues with parts of it. But at the same time, those with A stepping e63/400's also got 4mb of cache, so it's like an early e6320/6420.

edit: and besides, it's not too too great of a deal either. When I got my e6400, it was $189. I did two months earlier pick up a NIB e6400 retail from ebay for 190 shipped. And within a few hours after I ordered mine and posted this in hotdeals, the price went up to not too special, and definitely upset worthy for es.
