How come microsoft doesn't make IE for the macos, linux, or ios and the android phones?

Because they already get enough legal shit for including it on Windows? :D

Plus OSX/Linux are niche markets, probably not really worth the time/effort for a free browser. They did apparently used to make it for OSX and Solaris (up to 5.0).

It also gives a reason why they stopped development:

The reason given by Microsoft's PR firm was that "low customer demand for this download did not justify the resources required for continued development

:D

The mobile ones are likely not going to be made because they want to promote Windows Mobile over the others!

In my opinion, most people who use Mac or Linux, are specifically trying to avoid MS software, so probably few of them used IE when it was available on some of those other platforms, so it made little sense to continue developing IE for those platforms.

You like Internet Explorer? Do you like lead paint and asbestos?

They're going the Apple route, not the Google one (or mozilla, or opera)

Thread marked as +1 Flamebait. No response. Also IE works fine under WINE and VMs of course.

Now using a specific browser is equivalent to liking lead paint and asbestos.. I guess you think MS exaggerates and makes up things too much, as well?

Well, at least not having the latest IE is equivalent to liking lead paint and asbestos

I guess I like lead paint too cause I don't have much of a problem with IE9. It's not quite as polished and doesn't have the customization of the others but it works just fine for me.

Using any old browser would be not so smart, imo. Using IE10 now, all I can say is it's fast, compatible, and generally IE uses new security features of the OS before other browsers (DEP, ASLR, Sandboxing, etc.) So you guys can dump on it if it makes you feel bad ass, but I see no problem with it.

Unless it has session management I don't care.

Haven't tried IE10 so I can't comment about it. But any web developer who dumps on IE does so for good reason. It's not some elitist cool club thing.

If it were only web developers, and they had specific complaints I might be more open to the complaints. Most of the people dumping on IE believe urban legends like it's insecure, which is mostly born out of the fact that people use old versions of IE on old OSes, and proceed to get infected, but that would happen with any old browser on an old OS where the old browser & OS had significant market share. Many of the people who dump on IE's standards support also don't understand the issues involved, like the difference between an experimental API and a production ready API, and so on. They see 'html5' plastered around the web, and think it's some completed finalized standard that should be completely implemented, and IE sucks for not doing so. They have no idea it is far from completed, and many of its specs are still undergoing major changes. IE has been attacked in the past for implementing unfinished standards, then it gets attacked for not doing so, basically. The only complaint I really give credence to is lack of add-on support, but then, I find most add-ons useless and perhaps performance killing, so I prefer to avoid them any way.

I bet most of you guys use ie a lot.

Well I do. First to use DEP, ASLR and Sandboxing, first to use AppContainer (new specially hardened sandbox built into Windows 8, but you knew that right?), renders all my pages correctly, never crashes or hogs memory, doesn't have problems with flash, doesn't implement unfinished html5 standards just to brag. I can think of a couple of browsers that can't say that, that I bet you use.

Must not feed troll, must not feed troll.

I used to use IE....when I was around 12 and had no clue about computers. Then one day I magically stumbled upon the magical land of Narnia with Firefox and Opera and Chrome and Safari and basically anything thats not IE.:D

Do you even know why you don't like ie?! More than 50% of people use ie, that number is not mine.

IE9 is a fine browser. No need for most people to bother installing another browser.

Of course around here thinking that means I am an ignorant troll that likes to eat lead paint, & snort asbestos.
LOL, people are so funny. I use FF and IE and I don't have lung cancer or plumbism.

My only real gripe with IE9 is no spell checker. I type really fast and really sloppy and the spell checker in Chrome really helps me out a lot in catching type-o's. I use Speckie and that seems to work pretty well but I wish IE9 had a native checker. Other than that, its just fine for me.

IE has too many issues and is a victim of its own legacy. I've lost count of how many times I find out something isn't working - like typing in a form, a link etc, because I have to disable/enable compatibility mode. And the moment you do that, its a full page reload, meaning you lose all information, position etc. Or the number of annoying messages it keeps showing - 'show blocked content', 'disable addons', 'download completed' etc. There's no decent built in session manager, the option to restore last session doesn't work often if you have multiple windows. Compared to Firefox/Chrome, the extensions are pathetic.

IE10 has a very fast rendering and JavaScript engine and great security, but it is simply not good enough as a browser. As for the flash issue, I've had issues in Win 8 RTM and flash in IE.

A lot of those messages can be turned off in the Security Options, not sure why the download complete message would upset you, wouldn't the user want to know that almost always? I'm surprised you have issues that require compatibility mode, I can't remember the last time I used it myself. Can't speak of session management, I don't mess with that. The extensions are lacking, but not everybody needs them. I have pale moon installed, most of my installed extensions are to make it work like IE (bookmark middle click to open link and keep the bookmark menu open, omnibar, etc.) so it's kind of round-a-bout for me. Anyway, these are highly specific and technical nitpicks, that definitely don't put IE users in the 'likes lead paint and asbestos' category. But yea for certain users that need certain extensions, the other browsers are a better fit, but I always seem to keep going back to IE personally. One thing I really like is that opening and closing a tab are instantaneous in IE, other than that my experience in all of the browsers is almost identical (except chrome and flash have severe performance problems on my sig machine, so I don't bother with it at all any more.)

Yes, and for those reasons IE is still the default browser on my pc, since it is light and fast enough. One thing I forgot to mention is I hate IE's add bookmark dialog - I have a lot of them and to select a folder it opens up with a huge tree control that's absolutely unusable. They haven't updated this in the last 4-5 years.

I think MS gets a lot of flak for IE undeservedly, when its been shown to be the most secure (and probably just as fast) browser in any number of tests.
