Hey everyone, I'm a computer noob and need some help on what I am going to get for my new computer. I'm sorta on a budget so I don't really won't the high priced suggestions.

So this is what I am thinking.

Mobo

Video Card

Processor

Ram

HD

Now I posted on another forums about this also, and they recommended I get this video card

The thing that throws me off is that its 2.0 x16, and i was wondering if it'll work on that mobo.

So If you guys have any suggestions that could help me out I would appreciate it.

If you can squeeze in just a little bit more money, the 9600GT will perform nearly 2x as fast as the 8600GT and quite a bit faster than the 3850.

Can you show me one?

Edit: Also I should add I'm just probably going to be playing CS:S, TF2 and Cod4

What you have listed is fine for the games you will be playing. If anything, I would upgrade your motherboard.

Edit: Don't get that 8600gt though. Go for the ATI card for the same price.

Edit2: Scratch that..
Get this for sure.

GREAT deal on that card.
do NOT get the 256mb 8800gt. Nvidia handles memory a lot different(worse) than ATI and the 256mb version of the 8800gt tanks very quickly compared to the 512mb. it takes a much bigger performance hit because of its memory then the a 3850 256mb compared and to its 512mb versions. a strong card like the 8800gt needs 512mb to be worthwile in many games. he would be much better off with a 9600gt 512mb if not getting the 8800gt 512mb.

I concur. OP, Deegod490, I highly recommend getting the 9600GT. It is a way better than the 8600GT yet is only $40 more:
XFX PVT96GYDF4 GeForce 9600GT 512MB PCI-E Video Card - $140

Though if you can't afford the 9600GT, then I recommend switching to the 9600GS0 instead for the same price as that 8600GT card:
Asus EN9600GSO TOP/HTDP/384M GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB PCI-E Video Card - $105

Also, I recommend swapping the mobo for this Intel chipset mobo:
Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L Intel G31 mATX Motherboard - $65

Motherboards based on Nvidia chipsets, like the one you chose, aren't as stable or cooler running as their Intel counterparts.

If you need some extra cash for the mobo, drop the CPU down to this:
Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 CPU - $70

You're not losing too much performance switching from the E4600 to the E2180.

yes PCI-E x16 2.0 is backwards compatable with 1.0, it just won't be able to utilize all the bandwidth which no graphics card today does anyways...

the e2180 is a great CPU which can do a lot if you are willing to overclock it.

also, the 256 MB won't be a problem unless your on a decent resolution, what monitor will you be playing on? also can you post what items you linked to? I'm too lazy to click them all lol

with a 19" monitor, definately go for 512 MB then... resolution is 1440x900?

also, overclocking is quite simple... and even with stock intel cooling on a e2180 you'll be able to get to minimum 2.6, 2.8, 3.0

if you won't overclock, the e2180 is no good... you'll need to get a processor with higher stock clock speeds. maybe an AMD chip?

At stock speeds the E2180 is still pretty fast. AMD CPUs in the $70 price range are just as fast as the E2180. So you won't be saving any money or gain any performance switching to an AMD setup.

Yes, the 9600GT is worth it if you're playing at 1440x900. If not, the 9600GSO I recommended earlier is a good choice.

Also, that GA-945GCM-S2C motherboard isn't as good as the mobo I recommended earlier. It's based on the older 945 chipset whereas the one I recommended is based on the G33 chipset. But if you don't need RAID, better stability, or better overclocking, then the GA-945GCM-S2C is a good choice.
