im going to be building a pc this week and im going to go AMD 64 and i think its a waste having a socket 939 system and not overclocking it problem is i dont know how to overlcock or what parts to get

after lots of research and 1000.00 budget this is what i came up with for a nice overclocking rig :D

Antec Solution Series SLK3000B Super Mid Tower Case (Black) Retail $47.00
Fortron Blue Storm 500W ATX12V V2.0 Power Supply $90.00
AMD 64 3200 s939 $190.00
DFI "LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D" NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra $139.99
Patriot Dual Channel Kit 184-Pin 1GB (512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 $130.67
Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM SATA $59.00
NEC 1.44MB Black Internal Floppy Drive $10.00
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive $52.00
EVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card PCI-E $179.00
ZALMAN Copper CPU Cooler "CNPS7700-CU" $52.99

Total $950.65

but i have a few questions

1.is the power supply i selected good enough to run my whole system and maybe a second hardrive and second dvd burner down the road ?

LINK TO PSU
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-104-934&depa=0

2.is the ram i selected good overclocking ram ?

LINK TO RAM

3.is the zalman cpu cooler i selected good ? i cant afford water cooling on my budget but i also dont want to use a stock HSF

LINK TO CPU COOLER
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-118-115&depa=1

also can anyone recomend a good site for overclocking guide or tips ? or anything that might be helpful

and thank you all very much for the help !

I would personally make a few changes to that setup..

Replace the Zalman Cooler with a XP-90.

XP-90 At Jab-tech (Way cheaper than Newegg) Outstanding Coustmer Service.

The fan that comes with the new retail is a piece of crap for the amount of noise it produces..

Replace it with a

More airflow for the same amount of noise.

Panaflow H1BX

Total Price $48.21 Shipped.

Powersupply should be Ok for your setup.

As for the ram, its a crapshoot on those modules. SOME of them are Samsung TCCD on Brainpower PCB (Some of the best overclocking ram available) however some are infeinon memory that doesnt overclock well past 215-220. And I have read problems of running in dual channel mode on that MB.

If you can add $50-100 to your budget I HIGHLY recommend G.Skill ram.

Here is a link
G.skill (Samsung TCCD) Dual Channel Kit 184-Pin 1GB(512MB x 2) DDR PC-4400, Model F1-3200DSU2-1GBLC

$239.99

This stuff is rated to run at 2-2-2-5 at 200 Mhz and 2.5-4-4-8-1T at 275Mhz (I have heard of tighter timings and it going to around 280-285 ish)

These ARE Samsung TCCD on Brainpower PCBs

Changing the memory and the Heatsink changes your total to ..
$1055.91

IMO you will have WAY more overclocking room with the Gskill memory.

The type of RAM you use is almost entirely irrelevant in AMD64 overclocking. Your parts selection is fantastic. I'd get an Antec True430 or Enermax Noisetaker 420 for the quiet and the fact that they are brands I trust a LOT, but I know Fortron is reputable.

Good choices all. Don't bother with an XP-90 on such a low-heat CPU, even overclocking-- it really is NOT necessary and won't reduce noise levels. Make sure to grab some Arctic Silver 5 for attaching the CNPS7700 with for optimal performance.

I was actually going to get the enermax 420 but i didnt know if it was strong enough ?

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-103-459&depa=0

this one right ?

so i really dont need a cpu cooler i thought it was mandatory thats why also ram isnt needed in overclocking ?

im still trying to choose i will probably get the gskill ram but i would like to save money and not get the cpu cooler do you ppl min dif i talk to you on a IM Program ? like aol

my screen name is Friendlypirate80 feel free ot msg me on aol im

i really wanna build my comp soon im on a 900 mhz duron and a geforce 2 for god sakes !

worst of all im on windows me :-(

Ouch Windows Me... Ill be able to do a tad more research for you tommorow I have to be at work at 630am and its 2am now need to go to bed :p

heheh thank you ! i will keep looking at threads and researching

now lets say i get the setup above how much will i be able to overclock ? if its only a few mhz i dont think i will spend a extra 250 bucks

i might just get this set up and not overclock at all

Antec Solution Series SLK3000B Super Mid Tower Case (Black) Retail
ENERMAX Noisetaker Series 420W ATX12V Ver2.01 PSU
AMD 64 3200 s939
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra
Corsair Value Select 512MBx2 DDR PC-3200
Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM SATA
NEC 1.44MB Black Internal Floppy Drive
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive
EVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card PCI-E

about 860 dollars and the money i save i can get a extra harddrive and a second dvd burner for on the fly burning !

If you want to overclock, get a DFI NF4 Ultra-D board, not an MSI Neo series one. You will have a far higher probability of success and more stability for it. RAM isn't an issue because you can set 'Max Memclock' in the BIOS to lower the RAM divisor, so RAM speed does not rise with the CPU. :)

If you have more questions IM me on AIM, Epicenter713 if you want to.

I couldnt disagree more. Overclocking is more than just pure CPU clock speed. Its about overall system speed. Now you can have 2 identical systems running at the Same Clock speed for the CPU but the FSB is where you get a lot of your overall system speed. AMD64's LOVE Low latency fast ram. And I suggested the XP-90 because its a 10x better heat sink than the Zalman and its cheaper to boot.

It's also a pain to install an XP-90. Check the benchmarks, RAM latency makes very little difference on the AMD64 platform, same as any other-- and the small performance gains around 3% are NOT worth the 100% or more price increase unless you live in some Bizarro dimension where everyone's idea of a good purchase is hurling pocketfuls of cash into a giant rift in the Earth.

My main arguement isnt the latency issues, its the max stable memory frequency issue.
The orginial memory he had selected wont go about 210-220 from most info I read. The Gskill will go 280+ (At tight timings to boot) The overalll increase in system performance from a 220 FSB to a 280FSB is signifant, and well worth the extra $100.

Example.

For example (Say they did make 3.6Ghz 478 Procs.)

2 Identical systems

2.4c @ 3600 (12x300)
3.6c @ 3600 (18x200)

Guess what system will be faster.

Not as significantly faster as you may think, though. He can easily attain huge overclocks by varying the RAM to CPU clock divisor ("Max Memclock") with no problems, keeping him from needing >DDR400 speed RAM. If he wants to run at say, 250 MHz FSB, he can get DDR500 but he should get a Value brand, and not some ultra-low latency gimmicky RAM that won't make a big performance difference (when all he is after is high frequencies.)

You said somewhere up there about on the fly DVD burning, if it has been addressed, ignore this.

But with DVD's (atleast for making backups of movies) You cant on-the-fly burn them, unless you use Dual-Layer Media, as the movies use Dual layer, which is 9.6GB instead of the 4.3GB of "normal" Blank DVD Media.

FYI, you can get a good OC with decent RAM. My A64 3000+ 754 is running at 2.3 Ghz with Kingston PC3200 Ram @ 213 Mhz(CL 2.5) Not too shabby if you ask me ;) . I just bought a stick of 512mb Geil PC4000 and can't wait to see what that will do! Specs are in the sig. Good luck on your build!

What? That's nonsense. Put a disc of the appropriate size in the writer and the disc to copy in the reader. Duplicate. The type of media makes no difference as to whether you can copy them or not. And FYI, most commercial DVDs are 4.7 GB, so capacity isn't an issue.

Indeed, I am using Value RAM and I am running my 2800+ (1800 MHz) at 2360 MHz stable.

You are incorrect.
95+% of commerical Movie DVD's are DVD-9s.
Therefore if you dont have a DL burner and media copying on the fly is not possible.

Also, you might want to look at some additional cooling in that case. Maybe an extra 80mm fan or two. Not sure what it comes with off the top of my head. I've built comps around the solution series and they are nice, but they don't come with the extra fans like some of the other Antecs do.

What? The existing 120mm fan is more than enough to handle a substantial overclock-- I speak from experience. Filling the second 120mm fan port covers any deficiencies with say, a Prescott system in that case. 80mms are unnecessary here and would be loud and whiny, while 120mms are much quieter.

OK; so he can get an NEC 3250A for $50 and do so. My bad; almost every DVD I've bought was 4.7 GB ..

Id say of over 400+ DVDs I have (I buy a lot of TV series on DVD) 95% or so are DVD9.
Reason they do that Epicenter is so that you cant easily back up DVDs without going throught the whole ripping, transcoding routine.

You dont have to now with DL burners however at $8+ a disc for the media its hardly worth it imo.

Probally not worth it to copy on the fly.

so i can make on the fly dvd backups lol ?

Hmmm, according to Epicenter, I can take a DVD, and on the fly burn it... But this seems to not work for me... Hmmm... Is there a reason I use DVD Shrink on every DVD to get it to fit on a 'normal' DVD? Unless you are going to use Dual Layer media to burn onto (Which is about $8 a DVD for blank Media, much more expensive) I challenge you to find me a Full-Movie DVD which I can make a direct copy of without using DVD Shrink or something of the like.

Yes, I was wrong about the 4.3GB, as they state 4.7GB capacity. But Nero will only let me burn 4.4GB ;)

Edit: I just finished completely ripping a full DVD movie onto my HDD, it takes just over 9GB. I doubt that will fit on a 4.7GB DVD, and as I said, Dual Layer Media is expensive, but it IS possible to burn on the fly, it just costs more. (I can get 50 blank 4.7GBDVD's for
$20, while I can get 3 Dual Layer DVD's for $27)
