I need a new PSU

Specs-
P4, 3 Gig, 1 Gig RAM, 180 Gig WD Caviar HD, 1 WD 120g Caviar, both IDE, Sapphire X1950 GT 256 MB AGP.

A while back, I got the Sapphire. I had a questionable PSU, so I replaced it with a generic 480 w PSU. My card crashed within a month, I RMA'd it, and got another one. Now every once in a while, if I stress the card, I lose input and have to hard boot. I'm thinking it's my PSU, and since tomorrow's Black Friday, I was wondering, what you would look for?

@ Firas

Well generally, there are much better quality power supplies in the price range of many Cooler Master PSU.

@ OpTioN and amethystdragon

It's called the 450VX and I recommend it as well:
Corsair 450VX 450W PSU - $70

is there some brand out there that provides A1 PSU quality?
I thought it’s cooler master :(

You know like the 7 series in BMW and the S in Mercedes
Example…. All XX PSU’s are excellent, they offer top-end super doper PSU’s
Who’s XX? :D

Wow, the coolest links this week (after that misa compo chick link)
btw, I ment hamann in BMW and Brabus in Mercedes
thnx

since many companies make such a wide range of product, it is dificult to say things like "Seasonic makes excellent PSU's" or "Coolmax sucks."

Why not try the apevia turbolink 500 Watt? Cheap and dual 12 rails. Newegg has it cheaper than 40$ i believe. And it has good reviews.:D

Because it's a really, really crappy PSU. I've seen apevia PSUs take out entire systems when they die after any kind of actual load.

Don't trust newegg reviews. A good majority of newegg reviewers are pretty damn ignorant/stupid when it comes to PCs. A good PSU review will use a proper load tester, proper test methodology, ripple charts, and efficiency figures. Some sites that does good PSU reviews:

www.jonnyguru.com
www.hardocp.com
www.anandtech.com
www.hardwarecanucks.com

Yes Apevia PSUs are shitty. I had an Apevia long when I was a newbie to the whole PC enthusiast scene. Damn PSU took out four hard drives before I finally realized it was that shitty PSU causing the problem.

And some reviews of Apevia PSUs:

haha!, well what about a antec 500w Basiq? and i was looking at some of the reviews on the apevia's and people use it on 8800gt's and like 5 hard drives. lol. Just wanted to add ;D

...and if I told you that a 6800gt agp gives me as many frames in crysis as an 8800ultra would you believe it?

I bet you think there really were weapons of mass destruction too.

hahah! no i thought some of the reviews in newegg would really mean something :(, what about the antec 500w Basiq? And what you think about this psu to support a 7900gt and a amd x2 cpu? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104935

For the same price as the fsp you linked I'd probably get this one instead:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817189005

and for a little bit more...this antec is pretty good:

And for mere pennies more than the antec linked, you could have a corsair.

FSP you linked is a rather.. old. It's only got who knows how many amps where it counts, heavy +3.3 and 5, and not really 400w continuous.

ok, well the thing is i already have the antec 500w basiq, got it on sale a week ago for like 40$, and im just not to sure about what manufactures to buy from. I have never heard of XCLIO, any other manufactures i can trust my system with? so far i know of

corsair
antec
silverstone
enermax
xclio
coolermaster

Im thinking of ordering the XCLIO 500w that aggr1103 recommended for my brother.

From Paul's review of the PSU:

Antec has branded and placed the Basiq 500w absolutely perfectly in relation to what the user gets as it is basic. Starting with the build quality and its steel gray punched metal housing to its component selection everything is basic enough to get the job done but without any flare or real stand out moments. The closest thing the unit could call a standout moment would be its efficiency which peaked at 82% at 120v. However, like many newer FSP based units it is still plagued by poor DC output quality as it hit the ATX12v limit of 50mV on the 3.3v rail at full load. Additionally, the transient response was passable but not what we would call standout. None of these facts though really doomed this unit to failure as up until the full load test at 100v it was still running and in specification, if just barely. It was the unit’s inability to run the full load test for more than a few moments that took the shine the unit was developing and turned it steel gray. At the end of the day the Antec Basiq 500w is not the worst power supply in the roundup or the worst choice a user could make at $50 (at time of purchase the unit was $50 currently however it is $69.99) but it certainly is not an award winning power supply or one worth $70.

Just all right. The XClio is a good choice.

Other manufacturers to trust:
Seasonic
Enhance
Channel Well Tech (CWT)

However check the links I posted a few posts back. Think it's my third post here.

ahh! exactly what i wanted to know, thanks Danny. Ill use the antec just to hold off untill i get more cash for an upgrade.:)
