I’m a PC

Maybe they should just have the PC guy ask the Mac guy, "How are you at playing games?" Then have the Mac guy look puzzled. End of commercial.

Mac guy: I'm excellent at video games! I got all the stars in Super Mario Galaxy!

The qualification beef against Obama is about as unjustified and ignorant as the Mac commercials. Do the mods a favor and stay on topic.

Typical lib, call people who disagree with you names, and you get to decide what is legitimate to talk about in a campaign. If I had a nickel for all the things McCain isn't allowed to talk about in a democratic election. I guess in the liberal world view, experience only matters for vice presidential candidates. However, the presidency is apparently an entry-level position.

For the record, I was responding to another poster who took a shot at Palin, but thanks for the help staying on topic. Funny, however, how you are apparently exempt from this on-topic rule - you get to take your little political shot, then quick, back on topic!

Apparently you didn't read your own link

Yes, I read it. Did you, Mr. Snarky? The article is quite clear.

Not all of the images on the PressPass site were generated on Macs. The sample print ads, which highlight the campaign's "Life Without Walls" slogan, were produced using the Windows version of Adobe Photoshop, according to their files.
Obviously some, but not all of the images were created on a Mac. The irony remains. And for those who have any sense of humor and don't take themselves or what computer they use too seriously, it is funny.

EH, not bad.

But the Bill and Jerry ads are much more fun!

Bring back Bill and Jerry!

Wow, an ad agency uses Macs, will wonders never cease?

And get this; Microsoft makes software for Mac OS! *gasp*
Also; Apple makes Windows software! *spit take*
Furthermore; Sometimes people use Windows on Macs! *gasp*
In addition; CATS AND DOGS

They're tools, who frigging cares? For fuck's sake, people are still having their imaginary identities based on the operating systems on their computers?

I'm not a liberal and I'm shocked you gathered that tidbit from one sentence. Jump to conclusions much?

As for the name calling....I didn't call you ignorant I said the qualification argument that's floating around is an ignorant argument. I suggest reading things closer before flying off the handle next time.

Go back and look at this thread again.....YOU quoted me.

Listen man, I'm not sure what your problem is but I made an analogy in context with the discussion and you're the one who chose to take it and run. At this point I'm simply standing up for myself from someone who can't keep himself under control.

I'm sure a good portion of Apple products are made and designed by Windows based machines as well. The point is that the ads were made for MS not by them.

You must not watch TV much then. Many advertisements compare their products directly with other products, everything from soda, to beer, to laundry detergent. It's nothing new, it's been going on for decades. The only thing that's different here is that the MS fanboys get their feelings hurt and have to bash on Apple.

NOT TRUE !!!

Does a Ford commercial say that Chevy cars always crash and are unsafe?

Does a McDonalds commercial claim that eating a Whataburger us not hip?

Does a Tide commercial say that Cheer is a fake laundry detergent and should not be used by anybody?

NO !!!!

But do all MAC commercials say that Macs are hip and cool and PCs and users just suck?

YES !!!

Let's keep politics out of this thread, please.
Surefire way to derail a thread.

Found it rather comical myself.

Really not that surprising.

Yep.
Closest thing, I can remember, is simply stating FACTs (FACT is something Apple apparently has troubles with).
"Won more awards than Chevy or Dodge" or "Better MPG than XXX" etc. They don't make stuff up, and more importantly: they don't outright knock the competition.

I am a PC and I would like to have dinner with the Asian girl at the data center. Where art thou my beauty.

To protias above... Yep, exactly a commercial, if they wanted to take it on directly, they could do.
They make fun of PCs being for "business" and all serious, yet those are the folks that actually keep the world turning. Not the douches that are either out of work or take a day or two off to wait in line at an Apple store.

Ok, here are the facts that I see...

1. Apple came up with a reasonably successful advertising campaign built on a simple format of two guys set on a white background using the "I'm a Mac/PC" line.
2. Microsoft feels slighted by their advertising and wants to do something about it.
3. Apple is creative
4. In a desperate attempt to be "creative", Microsoft turns to Bill Gates and Seinfeld believing they hold the key to saving their name.
5. Realizing those commercials suck, they create a series of new commercials stealing Apple's line and trying to repackage it as their own.

Microsoft only flaunts their own lack of creativity by even acknowledging Apples successful commercials by doing anything even remotely similar to "punch back" by using phrases like "I'm a PC". This only further solidifies in my mind the lack of creativity in Microsoft's corner. It has become clear that sprinkling money on creativity doesn't make it blossom. Microsoft needs something truly original, something to combat Apple's commercials not by using Apple's lines and trying to make it their own, but by doing something revolutionary.

It's really not THAT difficult. In a matter of 5 minutes of brainstorming with a fellow producer friend of mine, we were able to come up with a series of ideas that are entirely original and creatively entertaining. And it wasn't even hard, I bet anyone on this forum could have thought of something better... Money isn't the problem, it's vision. The same reason you can spend 100mil on a feature film and it still sucks. It's not the money, it's the vision!

If by some random chance you are reading this Microsoft, just give me a call and I'll be more than happy to donate a few ideas to your cause. I love your products, and I would love to see you produce something that gives justice to what you have accomplished and will undoubtedly accomplish in the future.

Why aren't you making millions in the advertising industry again?

stealing Apple's line and trying to repackage it as their own.
Bull.
If they were trying to sell them as their own, why the heck do they have a "Hodgeman" saying he's a stereotype???

not by using Apple's lines and trying to make it their own, but by doing something revolutionary.
What you don't understand, is Apple shot themselves in the foot with the whole "I'm a PC" bit. Microsoft is picking it up and running with it, and doing a pretty darn good job with it.

Why aren't you making millions in the advertising industry again?
Yea I thought the same...

The ad was good and it did it purpose, to show Apple they aren't the big dogs and which is why you're posting some rant on a forum while trying to defend Apple!! The ad served its purpose!!

I don't think Microsoft is making these commercials for the right people. A lot of you guys like it, which is good, but you're already probably fans of things not apple so you appreciate the tasteful ad. I bet most other people will find it boring and useless since it doesn't point out the ways in which windows is better than os x.

It's not trying to tout why one is better than the other. It is breaking the stereotype that apple tried to make of PC users. According to Apple all PC's are good for is running spreadsheets. I think this ad makes it more apparent that Windows is vastly more important than anything Apple has.

Proctor and Gamble makes them both, so probably not ;)

That's not the point.:( The point is that the commercials by other companies do not insult other products as much as the Apple commercials insult PCs and PC users.

I mean the only thing that would come close would be if Pepsi made a commercial featuring someone drinking Pepsi from a Heisman trophy while another person drinks Coke from a dog dish. Does this mean that Pepsi is better than Coke? NO IT DOES NOT !!!

I get that impression, too. Although I did see a commercial that was close: A kid walks up to a pop machine and buys two cans of coca cola - encouraging us to think of how much he likes it, of course - he just bought TWO! But then the kid puts them on the ground and steps one foot on one can, and the other on the opposite can. This makes him tall enough that he can now reach the Pepsi button. I definitely LOL'd at that, but the Apple commercials kinda remind me of that "mudslinging" attitude.

"Step on coke because pepsi is so much better"
"PC is boring and only good for boring workers, and make is so much better and not boring."

(... you know the soda commercial may have been the other way around. I don't even remember.)

I think this ad makes it more apparent that Windows is vastly more important than anything Apple has.

For sure! When MS makes a change or rolls out an update, multitudes more are affected worldwide than when Apple does something. Apple's biggest worldwide sweeping product is definitely the iPod. You can't even buy a Mac in many countries, but find a country where people can't buy a Windows-based PC.

Not bad for your first post.

I liked the original Gates/Seinfeld spots. They were different and could have led to positively rebranding Microsoft in a very unexpected and effective way.

The fact that their current ads are directly responding to another ad campaign says everything and pretty much embodies Microsoft's macro problem: lack of real leadership as far as core concepts and paradigms go. Pretty much every single thing they have done from the beginning has been a reaction or a copy of what the other guy is doing. About the only place they have shown any real innovation and forward thinking is the current incarnation of XBox Live, and hats off to the XBox team for that (Games For Windows is another story though, thank goodness for Valve and Steam picking up the slack there). Everything else is a reaction to what Google and Apple are doing (and if you want to go further back, Netscape and IBM). It is frustrating to see carbon copies of old concepts from other companies make it into "new" Microsoft products since I use all their products, but there it is. Seeing "new" features and UI paradigms in Vista that were pale versions of what I had been already using in OS X for over two years really drove the point home. Mind you, I like Vista, but again, it would be nice to see more leadership on Microsoft's part.

At the very least there could have been an ad that stood on its own as something truly compelling that blew away Apple's stupid ads (and they are fucking stupid). Instead they have to drag themselves down to that level, acknowledge their existence, and make an ad that functions only as a rebuttal instead of something that can exist on its own. Sad.

Something along the lines of HP's incredible and memorable advertising would have been awesome (or heck, stick it out with the Seinfeld ads and take it someplace great), but we get this instead. Fail.

OK, it had an emoticon on the message itself and a nother after the sentence. Do I need to put <humor> </humor> tags around sentence too?

"Step on coke because pepsi is so much better"
"PC is boring and only good for boring workers, and make is so much better and not boring."

The message of Pepsi's multi-decade Next Generation campaign was that Pepsi is for young hip cool people and Coke is not.

The problem with Apples' campaign is that they make statements that seem to be based on Windows 98 or XP 4 or 5 years ago.

Hi I'm Mac I'm now becoming a prevalent target of hackers and viruses due to my buggy Quicktime, iTunes, and Safari apps so basically I'm exactly like a PC except way more expensive and way less variety of applications and hardware!

And has a non existent available parts/upgrades list for the general public to buy, unlike the PC that can use pretty much anything out there.

I'm a hater.

Because I hate PC Guy, Apple Guy, Bill Gates, and Jerry Seinfeld.

But I use a PC, yet own Apple stock, so please go buy an ipod. :D

Pretty much every single thing they have done from the beginning has been a reaction or a copy of what the other guy is doing.
Don't even pretend that Apple hasn't been doing the exact same thing for decades now.

Hell, how many years were they behind MS to finally switch to x86? It certainly took Apple a lot longer to switch to x86 than it did for MS to respond to Apple's ads, lol.

Honestly, I don't think these ads really have anything to do with "responding" to Apple's ad campaign, but instead have to do with trying to improve Vista's adoption rate.
